Young British defenceman Sam Oakford gets his chance with the GMB Panthers in the upcoming campaign. Twenty-three-year old GB junior international Sam Oakford is joining the GMB Nottingham Panthers. Sam has played the last four seasons in the minors with Basingstoke and then his hometown Bracknell in the EPL. Now he has been given the opportunity to step up to the Elite League and he says he is relishing the challenge. The six feet one inch defenceman has played for Great Britain at under 18s and under 20s levels. Panthers’ head coach Corey Neilson said: “This is his chance. He’s a very positive young man and he knows this is going to be a big ask but he wants to give it a go. Five years ago Stevie Lee took his chance to play at the highest level when he joined us from the EPL and look what happened there.” Steve Lee's return on a new long term deal was the first of this week's signing announcements from the GMB Panthers, then came big forward Chris Lawrence, then another new import face in the shape of defenceman Steve Ward. Those announcements are in the news archive here at panthers.co.uk just click on the link from the home page to read more. www.panthers.co.uk/content/busy-signing-week-ends-chance-british-prospect-sam-oakford

Rotational like Norton I'd imagine. I like his size. Good luck to the lad.

Good luck to the lad. i think he will be better than Norton, having spoke to a guy from Sheffield who follows the steeldogs he says sam is a class d man and should be able to make the step up, he is very confident on the puck hopefully be a good 6th d man

Do we know anything about his style on D? Offensive or defensive? Can someone with the maths do our imports at the mo? If Oakford is the 6th D are we covered on all other spots with potential imports?

I suspect this means we will have 4 import defender (plus lee and oakfield) 7 import forward (with boxill, clarke, farmer and lacho) giving us 11 forwards. If we sign one more brit,, we could possibly have 4 lines?

Glad we are giving the lad the opportunity. Just thinking if we give him and Norton equal opportunity and they both come good we could have 3 top Brit D men. I like norton and if people are saying Oakford is better it's looking good.
Getting another Brit for four line hockey would be great also.

We need Mosey , Lee and Oakham plus 4 import d men to make us competitive, anything less were in trouble esp if you get a couple of suspensions/injuries . have 6 import forwards plus Farmer, clarke and lacho .
Giants won the league last year with 4 import d men .....

Mosey is an import, so three more import defenders will bring that up to four in total.
You could also point out that the giants won with 7 import forwards last season and I suspect they will have 8 import forwards this season (along with sheilds, peacock and garside)

We need 4 more solid imports . Fact. Not fact - opinion. We need x number of reliable/skilled/efficient Dmen, as part of a balanced team. Exactly how to achieve that is far from an exact science, and likely has a number of possible answers. Simple counting of imports or totting up stats appears to have minimal relevance...

Mosey replaces weaver as dual nat. We need 4 more solid imports. Semantics aside, Mosey is an import. Opinion, not fact. Quite a bit. Compare Brits/Dual Nats signed so far for starters. Panthers - Lee (D) - Oakford (D) - Mosey (D) (Dual Nat) - Norton (D) (2-way) - Boxill - Betteridge - Clarke - Farmer - Lachowicz Steelers - Thomas (D) - Sarich (D) (Dual Nat) - Dowd - Hewitt - Hill - Phillips Just comparing dual nats, Mosey is 25 years old and has come in off a season where he has been scoring for fun from d (including PO games, 1.26 PPG) whereas Sarich is 33 years old, has a chequered history of injuries and has just finished a season with 0 PPG, because he was dumped by the previous Steelers coach/retired and didn't play all season. I doubt Tony Smith will be happy to spend Super League-like sums of money on imports who can carry their currently smaller Brit pack, and looking about the UK there aren't exactly many Brits kicking about that either haven't been snapped up by Belfast/Panthers/Telford/Someone Else or are of the quality to log genuine minutes in the EIHL.

I'm pretty sure Richardson will end up at Sheffield.

I would have thought Batch was more likely to go to Sheffield than Richardson.
Richardson is a good player but he's made of glass like Sarich.

Are peeps really comaparng the Steelers Brits/Dual Nats with ours ..Really? If I was a player reading this forum I would be seriously insulted to be comapared to Phillips, Hewiitt, and Thomas - they should be in the EPL now, not EIHL

You obviously ain't taking into account suspensions and injuries. If we went with mosey and 3 import d men we're asking for trouble and don't think they'd manage tbh. We have 3 decent brit forwards with possibly myers m 6 import forwards would be ok.

You obviously ain't taking into account suspensions and injuries.... How many suspensions and injuries should Neilson account for then? 2012-2013 season levels or 2013-2014 levels? You know Mosey is an import right and that the drum you've been beating is "four import d"? Mosey + three imports = four import d! Would it? Myers isn't even signed yet and what if Panthers have a run of suspensions and injuries to their forwards? Your comments are all based upon assumptions, but you've only 'assumed' in a manner that suits your rather narrow agenda. If ifs and buts were candies and nuts we'd all have a wonderful Christmas.

Yes im aware Mosey is a import but hardly top end, don't expect much from him I could get points in the dutch league . To me he replaces weaver so I want 4 additional imports, ward signed so 3 more.

You do realise that ridiculous statement removes any credibility you may have had? In what possible way - apart from just being A Generic D-Man - does Mosey replace Weaver? Mosey is younger, probably faster... but doesn't have Weaver's experience, and is unlikely to replace Weaver's acknowledged leadership contribution. Does he have Weaver's killer shot? Thankfully Corey is very unlikely to see Mosey as any kind of 'replacement'... for anyone. He's got more sense.
