Noticed the following on Giants forum:-
Quote:
it's a limit of 10 non EU players, plus a maximum of 3 EU passport holders/dual nationals on a roster, and then the Brits. So 13 non British players and then your Brits.
Anyone any thoughts?, with the mention of dual nationals takes us back to the old Heineken league days and the fight over the few players that qualify...

You can get better EU nationals than dual nationals I would imagine.

I like it. I think we're gonna lose a lot of the top Brits this summer so if we can replace them with players of a better standard it means the league will be stronger.
I'm sure Benny and Kowalski could fall under dual nationals now if they wanted to - so 10 imports plus them wouldn't be too shabby!

If this is an agreed change, why haven't we had anything official, would be my first thought. Wouldn't really be against it on first glance.

If it is a maximum of 3 EU/Dual nationals, and we count Benny, K-Wall and Kalus as our three, then ten full on imports to come could make it a strong squad.
I guess the issue is, that if one of those three got injured, we would have to replace them in the line up with a similar registered player.

Looks like its been confirmed.
The Rapid Solicitors Elite League have made some changes to the playing rules, beginning from season 2014-15. The EIHL clubs met this week in Hull and the following changes have been unanimously agreed by all present. As from the upcoming season (2014-15), the number of non British-trained players will rise from 11 to 12, but the amount of work-permit players will remain at 11. The number of non British-trained players will rise to 13 in season 2015-16 and 14 in season 2016-17, with the amount of work-permit players again remaining at 11. Elite League chairman, Tony Smith, said: "The league agreed that there is a shortage of top-level British players, which keeps the Elite League from being outstanding across the 10 teams. "With the demand of the indigenous British player higher than ever in all leagues, and with the potential for EU/dual-national players to develop into national-team players, it was felt this gradual increase would be beneficial to all. "As with all things, the Elite League will monitor its development as we look forward to another successful season."

So for this year we can have 11 imports, 1 EU/Dual Nat., and Brits?

Kowalski is our dual-national. So now he gives us an import slot like Murphy and Bowns do. What a boost that is!

Tricky one.
It's a bold move and they knew it'd be controversial.
It's definitely not going to help the national team or encourage young kids to play hockey. By 2016 you could play an import nettie plus 2 D pairs and 3 full lines of imports.
But then, why should it help the national team? It's not the league's responsibility to develop British talent.
The fact is there just aren't enough good quality Brits to go around at the moment. If Panthers lose Lacho and Lee as is rumoured, then we have three choices. We either go out and outbid the other teams for their Brits. We try and bring young Brits through to replace them and write off winning anything for a couple of years at least because other teams' Brits will be so much stronger. Or we spend HUGE on imports to try and rebalance things.
I'm not surprised people like Dave Phillips are up in arms about it because it's people like him who might no longer be able to name their price. Regardless of the limit, there's still room for about 40 Brits to get regular ice time in the Elite league next season. But when you watch the kids teams on the second pad during the intervals, it's really sad that their dream of playing for their home town club has effectively gone today. And who knows what impact that's going to have on whether kids get into watching Panthers in the first place.
My main thought is that they've got it the wrong way round - surely it'd make more sense to increase it to 14 this season and then gradually reduce it back to 11.
I'm not a fan of the current situation - the product now is barely watchable a lot of the time - but I'm not sure 14 imports in 2 seasons' time is the right solution.

Jamie Black on Twitter. "Should also take into account the possible expansion of the EIHL in the next few years..." As I tweeted Jamie - ice hockey being ice hockey what happens a year down the line can change. It to me seems a bit premature if this has influenced the decision.

So have I got this right ?
It's effectively the same as last season but we can have a player from Europe or dual national as one extra ?

A couple of points I'd like to raise:
The EIHL has no obligation to help British platers get better. Whether thats right or not is a different discussion. The owners run the league - if this is how they see fit to make sure we have a league in 10 years time, then that's fine with me. Better product on ice generates more money in these clubs.
Secondly, the players who are moaning: Matt Towe - dropped down to EPL before this came into place. If he's that bothered about Brit development, surely he'd want to ply his trade in the EIHL rather than chase money. But when an owner does it, it's "Money grabbing". Pot. Kettle. Black.
Brit players have now become a less valuble commodity and some won't like that. People say about "No heart or passion" for the teams but Mr David Phillips was quite happy to leave Hull to go to bigger clubs to get money rather than make Hull a better team.

All these Brits that are moaning, news flash, no one pays to see you, you are average at best. We appreciate your heart, if you are good enough you'll get in don't worry, cream will rise to the top. If not you can all go sign in kasakstan because that worked out well last time....
If you think one or two more import spots in the elite league is the biggest problem with GB ice hockey you are seriously deluded. It needs an overhaul from top to bottom it's not the elite leagues problem, building a top league with the best talent possible is a good thing.

And here we have it fully explained from the MOUTHpiece of British ice hockey. "David Simms @simmsey 10m Do fans honestly think clubs wanted this to happen. Do you think clubs had a choice. Are some of you that daft?"

At least they proved me right about the import limit being illegal and one legal challenge away from being totally abolished. I said this years ago.
Maybe the rule book will be next
