what is it with penalty shots that freezes a player ? I've seen it time and again, put a player in a one-on-one situation during the game and probably 2/3rds of the chances are scored (unless it's K-Wall in goal), but give a player a penalty shot and they often make a mess, don't get a shot away, or second guess themselves. The British players are the worse, Myers, Lacho, Clarkie - I've don't remember converting penalties but give them a clear one-on-one breakaway and they look much more confident. And we've seen Ryan expertly put away a one-on-one last week, and look short of ideas tonight on the ps. Is it the pressure of being in the spotlight, the fact that they are expected to score the ps and that by failing they are wasting an opportunity, whereas a breakaway during the game is often as a result of a breakdown in play and therefore it won't look so bad if they miss. Any-one else have any thought on this

I suppose it could be a few things:
Like you say it could be the idea everyone is waiting for them and it's just them and the Netminder
It also could be the actual 1 on 1 situation. A PS is taken by the player obstructed. Yet in a PS shootout we pick so more are scored.
Also, the puck is still and the player has to try and generate momentum and also deceive the Netminder AND score within half the ice. During a game, a breakaway will already have momentum and is basically just a shot.
