For those that have Eurosport (and I suppose, given the state of the interweb, those that don't either) the Spengler Cup is on over the Christmas break. 6 teams, including CSKA Moscow, and the Rochester Americans of the AHL, and a Team Canada made up of Canadians playing in Europe already, featuring one Anthony Stewart. He's bounced around a bit since the lockout, currently just joined Gotteron in the Swiss league having started the year in the KHL. Team Canada also features Eric Beaudoin, for those that can remember his brief stay in the UK.

The words "total" and "meltdown" spring to mind. But he is coach's son, so he should be ok. Bet they haven't got the on ice mics on today...

They put in a decent showing today against CSKA, lost 4-3. Some good names on the Moscow roster.

HC Davos are rather good......makes you wonder why when their average crowd is 300 per game LESS than Panthers !

Population of Davos is a fraction of Nottingham.

What's that got to do with it Yotes, population % doesn't make any difference.
The population of Sheffield is three times that of Nottingham but we get bigger crowds.
I was referring to two clubs with similar attendances in Davos/Panthers yet Davos are serious quality compared to Panthers.
Presumably, either Davo's sponsors must pay serious money,or they don't make the profit Panthers do because they use it to pay quality players wages.

What's that got to do with it Yotes, population % doesn't make any difference. It does when a city has a population of 11,000

No it doesn't Bill.
Only the crowd inside the arena pays for a ticket,so the rest of the population bigger/smaller doesn't matter.
My point is,how does a team getting 4700 average assemble a team so far superior in quality to a team who gets an average 5000+ ?
Unless tickets in Davos are a silly price, but I would hazard a guess they are cheaper than at Panthers !

I thought your point was that they have a great team to watch but don't attract more than us, rather than how they bank roll it.
Sponsorship, ownership, ticket prices, costs. Could be differences in all of them.

It's got to be Yotes,I just find it annoying that a team attracting less fans can put a team on the ice of such superior quality.
If you look down the attendance league table there are much worse crowd/team quality comparisons too.

The National League A has, apparently, the best average attendance across all teams of any European league, is sponsored by some Swiss financial institution (loadsamoney), they have 2 television partners who probably pay them, the teams probably even get full priority over their rinks (proper best of 7 playoffs), maybe even own them? Also the majority of their very good team are Swiss, I don't know what effect that has on costs but having really good home grown players can't hurt I'm sure, and it's probably a sign that there's big interest in the sport outside of the game night crowds, good for the TV, I'd guess that's the real key.
Maybe someday we'll have that.
Or not.

It's got to be Yotes,I just find it annoying that a team attracting less fans can put a team on the ice of such superior quality. If you look down the attendance league table there are much worse crowd/team quality comparisons too. HC Davos are almost the worst supported team in the Swiss league The ticket prices in Switzerland are over double what they are in the EIHL. Season tickets at some clubs cost well over a £1000. There are cheaper standing seats but if you want a seat in a decent section at Davos and most clubs you are probably looking at £35 - £50. A ticket to watch just one game in the spengler cup practically anywhere in the centre blocks is £80. Clubs in Switzerland also receive bigs sums of money from TV as well from sponsors. In a rich country like Switzerland where Ice Hockey arguably is the number one sport, it is hardly surprising. How you can find that annoying, I don't quite know, its like comparing the premiership and the MLS in a way. Seattle Sounders average 44,000 fans in the MLS and their wage bill is £3.5 million, there are teams in league 1 with a tenth as many fans spending more money than that

And that is the answer!
An where do you get this idea that Sheffield's population is 3 times that of Nottingham?

The population of the urban areas of Sheffield and Nottingham are very similar according to the ONS, and in fact Nottingham's has 45,000 more residents than Sheffield's. (730k vs 685k)

when did this turn into a Geography lesson? This afternoon was another cracking game, i will be watching some more. When someone used a "plucked out of the air" "fact" (that turns out to be total rubbish) to illustrate a "point". You can't just spout complete cobblers when you're trying to argue a point. Although it doesn't stop a fair few people. Agree, some excellent games so far.

Davos spend more, probably make a loss, the money made goes back into the club, plus they play in a professionally run league.
