Oh I'm sorry if you took it the wrong way 'Nemesis', it was just banter, directed at an ex-Steelers player. No need to justify yourself, you are obviously happy and that is all that matters at the end of the day.
As I say, just banter. Some people recognise and enjoy it.
Ps, to add in respect to 'Rob#12' post, I'm a rec player and although I can't say I know for sure I reckon I would turn down the chance to play for the Panthers.
I know my limits and I'm not too proud to say that I'm nowhere near good enough to play at that level and know that, if I had to actually step on the ice (which if they are having to trawl the rec teams for outskaters is a distinct possibility), its likely I'd get killed. I also know that I'm not good enough to do justice to the Nottingham Panthers jersey.

I was the same fella, in fact on the Saturday morning I called a mate of mine who has played ENL and had him on his way up because I knew that everything you say above applied in my case too. Love him or loath him it actually took a bit of an ear bashing from Mr Simms himself to talk me round. And although I'm not daft enough to think that in part it wasn't because it suited his agenda at the time, what he said was no less true, it was basically this; if you don't do this you will regret it for the rest of your life and you will be nothing more than a gutless nearly man. Harsh, but some truth in it. I spoke to lots of people, again because of all the reasons you quote but you sometimes have to be a bit selfish I guess, it isn't just about doing the Panthers justice, its about doing yourself justice too. If you did get on and played to the best you know you are capable of, and if everyone knew the situation, as they all did in my case, what more can they ask? When we went comfortably ahead in Dundee on the Sunday and Ben turned and said 'If they score (Moose was on a shut-out) your getting the last 5 minutes' I nearly wet myself! LOL. This was a time served NHL'er, he knew exactly what my level was, I had done 2 training sessions with them. For him to even contemplate giving me 5 minutes, not because of injury, but out of choice! Bloody hell! I know we were a few goals up, but 5 minutes is a bloody long time in ice hockey goal scoring terms! WOW. I still can't get my head round it :-) If you ever did get the chance mate, these are feelings you really, really want to have the experience of, I wish I could bottle them some how and share them. :-)

I've never played NM (bloody nutters the lot of you) but generally, aside from the 6oz lumps of frozen rubber flying at you, its a fairly well protected position. I know from going in hard on a NM just how much grief we outskaters get from opposition players for our actions and nowdays NMs can go wandering around a fair bit free from the threat of being put on their backsides. On the otherhand, as we often see mentioned across the various forums in respect to 'young Brits' when they get checked, step on the ice and outskaters are fair game. Also the reality that back-up NMs rarely get used must have eased your final decision a little? I'm not for one second saying that your decision was an easy one (as you yourself confirm), just that the positions individuals play in (and the likelihood they'd be used) may well affect their willingness to jump at an opportunity to dress for a game with the pros. I think its far from as simple as "no one would turn down opportunity to play for their pro club" as stated by Rob#12 earlier.
As an aside, I didn't make my comment without the smallest sliver of something to compare it to. I once got (and took) the opportunity to represent the UK as a member of a Tri-Service military team in an international tournament (kayaking, which I was fairly good at once upon a time). It was an amazing experience but I knew that I was only there as a consequence of; a) an injury to a first choice kayaker and; b) that I was available at the time. I felt very lucky to have been given the opportunity but was acutely aware the whole time I was both with the team and competing that I was well out of my depth. Compounding my feelings no doubt was the amount of time I was with the team (10 days). Any initial feelings of pride in representing my country were slowly eroded over time and to be honest, by the end, I just wanted to get home. I knew not much was expected of me but I couldn't change my own feelings.Fair play for you stepping up but I'm not sure that I could, given my previous experience of making up the numbers in a sports team.

Anyhoo, back to the rights and wrongs of hammering teams in their own barn.
Winning is what counts. Step off the gas to keep things 'respectable' and you run the risk of letting the opposition back in. Its up to the home team not to embarrass themselves in front of their own fans, not the visitors.

Yeah, your right, those things all did influence my thinking and I had been told by everyone that given the circumstances, should I have to ice the opposition would not absolutely schlack me. But, to counterpoint that I would say that even given all the protection it wasn't any kind of physical aspect I feared, it was giving goals up and letting everyone down, especially given the gulf in ability. And I also figured that although an opposing team would take the you know what if the change was forced, if I was sent on voluntarily, surely that makes it fair game?
It looks like we have similar backgrounds, I captained one of my ships Rugby teams and also the 'B' Golf team.
Both things I am equally proud of :-)
To represent my country though as you have, WOW! How awesome is that!
I can see your points though and do understand where your coming from.

Therefore perhaps he was referring to the previous Sunday's game? Thanks for playing though, your input is important to us. Comment by rival fans is always welcome, even more so when they make themselves look silly all by themselves, so we appreciate your efforts.

It actually referred to the Steelers v Panthers game on Sunday 8th September.

It actually referred to the Steelers v Panthers game on Sunday 8th September. Yep, that is what I concluded. I guess if our almost amusing Belfast friend had been paying attention he'd have noticed too.
