Come on Gilly, you cant honestly compare a builder to a professional sportsman. he will have come a lot cheaper after missing last season and will be using this season with the panthers as a way to prove he is match fit, hoping to get a better deal the season after. ok then, for example look at Kieron Dyer in football, constantly injured but yet moved from west Ham to QPR and was still on around 40k per week. the principle is the same. and with his pedigree in AHL i still cant imagine he would be a low earner on this team I never said he would be a low earner what I was saying is that his wage this season wont be the same as what it wold have been had he not missed the whole of last season. If he had been playing last season he wouldn't even be playing over here this year.

I see he also played with Leigh Salters at Florida Everglades in 2011-12 season. A reunion then!
Welcome to Panthers Chris. Hope you turn out as well as Werner and we will all then be happy. In Corey we trust!

A slight aside on signings. I called in to the tin shed to pick up a ticket for Panthers match today and Mike O'Conner hailed me (thinking I was a local). "You guys are putting together a good side again" was his take, so they think Corey has done a good job. He also confirmed that the Grudge Cup would take place again, this year on Steelers territory.
There was a 5% surcharge - not a booking fee, but the ticket operator could not tell me why, only that there had been an email.

Glad the 'Grude Cup' is taking place again.

High Risk/Reward factor here. If he's fully fit, he's a good aged player with solid AHL experience.

This guy has the calibre to be a great player. You don't play AHL and ECHL without being of a decent standard. Maybe people think he's diluted down because we've been used to NHL quality players - people looked at Werner and said he was a budget signing and he wasn't right but look how that turned out. Corey will have done his research and got the right guy not the budget guy. Totally agree with you on this. He may be 'budget' but only in the sense that as he's making a comeback after a year off he will potentially have been more agreeable both to the level of pay this side of the pond and the potential showcasing of his skills to European teams this year than if he wasn't. Given his try-outs (see below) I can't see him having given up on the possibility of an NHL contract without the year-off and therefore have been willing to come across. Also in terms of his potential calibre, re some of the other players who have come and surprised us, it is worth noting we are talking about a player who was selected by New Jersey in 2010 to attend their training camp - even though was already under an AHL contract with their affiliate already at the time - so they were clearly interested in considering upgrading him from an AHL contract to full NHL: linkand then the following year Carolina also invited him to training camp for a tryout in 2011: linkSo we're taking about an AHl defenseman considered to be on the cusp of the NHL twice in the two years prior to his year off. So in that sense, we've just got an AHL quality player, coming back with something to prove after time off, looking to show that he's ready for the game again and a player that both New Jersey and Carolina were interested in considering at the start of both proceeding seasons. I suspect he'll be looking to come in, prove his calibre (and fitness), have a chance to put up first assist numbers he might not have done as a Stay-at-home De-man if he'd had to start out again stateside (probably in the ECHL) and make people sit-up and take notice (both in the US and Europe) and relaunch his career that way. While ultimately time will tell on him, if he lives up to his potential i think 'bargain' might be a term we could be one day be throwing around rather than budget

Post of the thread and bravo on finding those links. It does sound like this guy could be a real star for us if he can get anywhere near to his previous levels. Having said that it must have been a fairly serious injury for him to miss a whole season when he was seemingly quite close to making the NHL.

Think some of you guys are being a bit tough on this signing, the guy is obviously class, his stats may not be amazing, but maybe he is a good stay at home D Man who just gets on with doing the job professionally.

After initially being a little underwhelmed by this signing, after further research I am beginning to think this could be another one of Corey's gems. Certainly after watching his fights on you tube, he loves throwing punches, and is not afraid to take on guys bigger than himself. I am indeed looking forward to seeing him in the black and gold.
