No sh!t. You get repeatedly punched in the head with bare fists and it's going to do some damage. It's only a very small percentage though when you look at the number of hockey players out there.

It may be that, given improved methods of diagnosing, reporting of such injuries becomes more commonplace in the future among ice hockey players. For example, with improvements in technology, clinicians are more able to distinguish Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) from other neurological conditions or link said conditions to CTE. Of course the issue then may become one where some clinicians then start trying to link all neurological conditions in hockey players to CTE, as is happening with Gordie Howe. Yes Mr Hockey was a physical player (though had only 30 fights in 2432 professional games) and played from before the introduction of helmets but his Alzheimer's may have absolutely nothing to do with playing hockey.
