Don't win anything for this Has this been confirmed anywhere? I was asking about this yesterday and no one seems to know! I wouldn't be terribly disappointed if we won nothing else this season, but it would be nice to know if we're still on for a Grand Slam or not (there is a precedent here - Belfast finished top of the cross-league table the year of the EIHL/BNL inter league games - but it is recognised that Coventry won a Grand Slam). The knockout cup wasn't played the year Blaze won the slam Kim. :-)

I wanted us to win the conference purely to shut the mouths of those who claim Belfast are the best team because winning the conference is harder than winning the league.
In my view the conference is linked directly to league performances so its difficult to justify calling them different competitions, therefore if people want to argue about 'grand slams' etc then thats fine. Doesnt detract from the fact we had easily the best team in the country this season.

Surely no one will ever get a slam if we're going to get picky. There will always be 2 conference winners and a trophy that goes to another team regardless - 5 EIHL trophies, only a max of 4 that any one team can win. So you either say you have the 3 major ones for a slam or no one can win one whilst the conferences are in at.

No because a slam is winning everything that you are eligible for, your not eligible for the other conference so it would count towards your slam. :-)

Fact of the matter is that we won more games in our conference than anyone else.
How that can be construed in any way, shape or form as tainting our league title is ridiculous.
There are still two trophies on the line, so any talk of Grand Slam's is premature in any event.

In other sports, the Grand slam is the winning of the major trophies. The conference isn't a major trophy, in fact there isn't even a trophy for winning it, I see it as no more important than winning the Aladdin Cup against Asiago in pre-season and the panthers obviously see it in the same way as we turned up hungover for 2nd game in Belfast (justifiably) and started Dan Green last night which shows how much we care

Sheffield never won a grand slam without breaking the rules, good job it is'nt football or else all those banners on their rafters would have to come down.

For me, if (big if) Panthers win the Playoffs (and on the dangerous assumption they hold onto the cup final lead) then it is a Grand Slam. It may not be a 'perfect' grand slam, but it is a slam.
To explain that a bit more - the big thing in darts is the 9 dart finish - there are 2 or three ways of doing a 9 darter, but there is one way which involves the same three darts each time - a 'perfect' 9 darter.
However, any other way of doing the 9 darter is still a phenomenal achievement - ie what the panthers' slam would be.

No because a slam is winning everything that you are eligible for, your not eligible for the other conference so it would count towards your slam. :-) I've always thought it was just the three main trophies - challenge cup, league and playoffs, because some teams play friendly games with a trophy at stake, and some years there were competitions that not every team entered (Panthers never entered the British Knockout Trophy). I just did some research on teams that have claimed a Grand Slam title in the UK - Durham, Cardiff, Ayr, Sheffield, Coventry. And they have won either 3 out of 3 major titles... or 4 out of 4 major titles. I have no records on whether they competed for and lost any piddly/friendly trophies those years. So Grand Slam would seem to mean "all major titles". The competitions they won were all separate entitities. The conference system is a subset of the league title. So should it be considered "major"? But... a trophy is a trophy to be competed for, so I suppose the Conferences do count towards a Grand Slam. I guess Panthers shot themselves in the foot there. Then again, since we lost the Aladdin Cup to Asiago last September, we were never going to be able to get a Grand Slam anyway... So, next year... Panthers would have to win the Rotterdam tournament, the Continental Cup, the Erhardt, the CC, the League and the Playoffs, to be considered Grand Slam winners? I'm sure that'll be the noises coming out of "everwhere but Nottingham" :-)

Like your read Flying Viking... Added to that I am going to research all league wins by other teams from the past AND if they don't stand up to the claim of this years whine on a Conference beat up of the 'lower' teams OR winning of 'games versus the other FOUR/ten/45 teams.I will claim a false title by default and demand a recount to re-award the winning trophy that was at stake. So there.Put that in your pipe and smoke it. (but not in the Arena/Rinks for H and S reasons)...

The conference isn't a major trophy, in fact there isn't even a trophy for winning it, Apparently there are Erhardt and Gardiner Trophies for the Conference winners. www.eliteleague.co.uk/the-elite-league-s12353. Anyone seen pictures of them?

Chipping in with the alternative view
The Tennis Grand Slam is still just the 4 majors I believe...
(Not the newer end of year Finals - that might be analogous to our Playoffs)

Now what about that Nottingham v Sheffield Challenge cup...or do we include the Golf day... ;D

I'd call it the 'pulling the pants down and slapping the backsides of the ABP brigade' which to a major extent has happened already but this would be a royal spanking!

I have to agree with Nem here. The slam is winning everything that you can possibly win in a season. Ayr and Sheffield (grand sham, sorry Nem couldn't resist) both won 4 trophies, League, B&H, Challenge cup and playoffs. So we cannot win the slam but we can do the treble of the bigger cups.

I think the fact we can say that this year we won the league should be good enough. If we win the Challenge Cup we'll have done a double and a massive IF we win the playoffs we'll have gone one better than the last two years and done the treble. That's plenty good enough for me. Keep the Grand Slam for next year, don't want to blow our load all in one season.

Yes I agree Sambo. I am glad to have finally got the league. I ain't getting too greedy. A double or treble would be fantastic but lets not get big headed. Although it would be sweet beating Sheffield again in the cup.
