We've got a fighting thread, and I thought it'd be interesting to have a tactics thread as well.
Never having played the game I don't feel I understand the tactics too well and I'd be really interested to read what tactics teams are employing in games.
Is it worth having a sticky or something to post messages about tactics and systems?

Could be an interesting thread, I am still waiting for someone to tell me what Corey's 'plan B' should have been for the last couple of years.

Do something our rivals who have won the league did...Win against the likes of hull and edinburgh instead of losing...

Keep it simple/don't try to be a show pony, play as a unit and not as individuals, don't go chasing silly little vendettas and play the whole 60 minutes.
Not that difficult.

Sorry, I meant this thread more as a post game analysis type of thing - for example, Coventry beat us by playing a strong forechecking game and keeping a man up high or whatever...

Two problems with this thread: 1. no one has mentioned any systems or tactics yet. 2. the lazy generalisation that we don't beat the poor teams and that's why we don't win the league.
I don't have time to go into great detail, but just looking at last season we finished 15 points behind the champions, Belfast.
Against the bottom 4 (Hull, Fife, Edinburgh and Dundee) we got 46 pts out of 48 (Belfast got 48 / 48), so those 2 points less than Belfast didn't cost us the league and having a 100% perfect record against a set set of teams is not realistically gonna happen very often.
Against the runners-up (Sheffield) we got 9 pts and Belfast got 10 - again not a massive deficit.
The two areas where we fell behind were the head to head games with the Giants (we got 4 pts they got 10) and our very average form against the mid-table clubs (Clan, Blaze and Devils).
Our record against those three was a mediocre 10-8-0 while Giants went 13-5-0 which combined with their dominance over the Panthers left them well ahead at the end of the season.

Just to add the previous season saw Sheffield and Cardiff tie on 87 pts and we were 15 pts behind.
Against the bottom 4 the top two both went 22-2-0 while Panthers were 20-4-0, those 4 points less didin't help but it was the other 11 points behind that made the big difference.

First change would be forget double headers with Belfast, have we ever come out with the majority of the points from a weekend against the Giants ?
Forecheck hard with two men, when we do that we always look a different team.
Play Panthers attacking hockey on the road too,not just at home. Quite why we try to play a different more defensive game on the road i don't know, attacking hockey and the way Panthers teams are built works at home so why change it just because you are playing away ?
Get the powerplay working properly, its very hard to win a championship without a good powerplay. Panthers powerplay is always far too static and slow and relies far too much on just trying to tee up the big shot from the blueline.
