www.panthers.co.uk/content/panthers-keep-cup-match-magazine-exclusive?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitterThe GMB Nottingham Panthers match night magazine launched today and revealed the club is to keep the Challenge Cup trophy which they have won for the last three years in a row. The exclusive news was broken to readers at Sunday's game against Dundee. The story revealed the cup has been at the silversmiths during the summer and has been restored to its former glory after taking a battering (not just from the Panthers) but the plinth is now engraved to the hilt and after a proposal from the Panthers, just like a Lonsdale Belt in boxing, three times in a row and its ours for keeps. Panthers bosses will be supplying a new replacement trophy for this year's Challenge Cup competition but the old trophy is staying in Nottingham. Panthers are honoured to have secured this decision and proud to give the cup, which some believe belongs in Nottingham, a permanent home.

Ive got to say I dont agree with this.
By us keeping it and replacing the tropy we lose all sight of History and Tradition. The stanley cup would still be a bowl if it was replaced every 3 years, not the iconic trophy it is.
Battered or not we should be building history not replacing history to make our trophy cabinet look full.

Don't think it makes that much difference tbh The World cup has lost none of its history despite brazil keeping the old one after winning it three times and and getting replaced with the current one.

It is a usual thing in many sports to do this, I am sure it would have been given to any other side if they had won it three times, nothing to see here.

Panthers have had to buy a replacement, would Sheffield have been able to afford to after the Grand Sham?

"Panthers bosses will be supplying a new replacement trophy for this year's Challenge Cup competition but the old trophy is staying in Nottingham". That's where the 50p rise in the match day programme comes in, to pay for the new trophy.

To be fair though at least it is likely to be better quality than if the EIHL themselves were buying the replacement. The EIHL provided school sports day-esque medals handed out at the play offs are just embarrassing.

Panthers have had to buy a replacement, would Sheffield have been able to afford to after the Grand Sham? So you basically are buying the Historic Challenge Cup so you can show it off forever and replacing it with what? Probably something far less Historic and worth nothing in hockey terms.

Did you win that Trophy Glynn? I thought that the first few years the Challenge Cup was a small cup that got nick named the egg cup. From what I remember when you beat us in the final a couple of times it was. The big trophy that Panthers have won three times was a later replacement. I think it has only been in use since the Elite League Started, but I maybe wrong.

I'm not buying anything, hell Gary didn't even ask my opinion, but anyway.... From what was said the Challenge Cup was not in a good condition, perhaps due to being thrown into office cupboards alongside random charity buckets by previous winners, so a replacement was sought. I doubt Panthers just took it upon themselves to do this, rather I'm sure it is more likely the EIHL approached the club with this proposal. As for history, would you say the FIFA World Cup Trophy has no history behind it? Once upon it was new and the Jules Rimet was the 'historic trophy.

It was also stated in the programme that there was no space left to put names any more anyway as they put the whole team on it too. So that could just be another reason they are getting a new cup.

Good reason to replace and as Yotes said with an exact replica. I do think I also recall that there was a smaller one before this version. First played for in the 97/98 season as the Express Cup (sponsors name) ...so this is the 16th season. The old Autumn Cup was played alongside it till season 00/01.having started in 83/84 with people wondering why we ever changed the competition/added another or indeed got rid of the Autumn domestic competition originally played 1946/47 to 59/60 although as league play.
