The 42 year old calls it a day after a remarkable 20 year career. Arguably the best defencemen of all time, his record speaks for itself: 4-time Stanley Cup winner (1997, 1998, 2002, and 2008). 12-time NHL All-Star (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009*, 2011). 7-time Norris Trophy winner (2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2011). Conn Smythe Trophy winner (2002). Olympic gold medal winner (Sweden, 2006). Unbelieveable career. The Olympic Gold tops it off for me, to have won that with your country (and as a Swede as well) just rounds off a quite remarkable list of honours.

I'd still have him at Panthers at 42

Deserves every accolade, 20 years at one club(except Västerås) is not to be sneezed at.

I fully agree, the greatest defenceman of all time.
An amazing player, an outstanding Captain (and he had big skates to fill when Yzerman left) and a really nice guy to boot.

Easily the greatest , and most successful. Felt privileged to have seen him play on the flesh . Very hard to replace and probably impossible

Best defencemen after Bobby Orr.
Sucks he won't be playing at the Big House for the Winter Classic. It will be weird watching the Wings without Lidstrom.
