Blaze swoop for Smith CPP Coventry Blaze are pleased to confirm the signing of British forward Sam Smith for the 2012/13 Elite League campaign. The 20-year-old has spent the past two seasons with hometown team Cardiff Devils, registering 56 points in 115 games. After playing for the Cardiff junior side and also for Swindon Wildcats in the English Premier League, Smith went to America to ice for Dubuque Thunderbirds in the Central States Hockey League in 2009/10. Coach Paul Thompson said: “I am looking to have more size on the team next season and when I heard Sam was available I thought he would be a good fit. “He is 20 years old and he is 6ft 3in and 220lbs, he has good size, he goes to the net, he has a nice touch and he finishes his hits. “He is one of those British players I have always noticed out there on the ice and he has been a pain in the backside to play against. “Sam can be a handful and we are hoping to further develop his game. He is excited to be joining us and we are excited to have him with us.” Smith joins Robert Farmer, Shea Guthrie, James Griffin and Ross Venus on the roster for next season.

Are we sure Danny has re-signed for this year, I can't seem to find that any where. Article from last year specifically says 1 year, unless there has been anything since and elite prospects doesn't cover 2012/13 either? www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/ice-hockey/13307402

Danny has a business here as well as having a settled family here, I'm sure he won't be going anywhere.

I also doubt he would move elsewhere, just think we are a bit premature on dropping it into the rosters on p.1.

CPP Coventry Blaze have confirmed defenceman Jonathan Weaver will not be back at the Skydome next season. The 35-year-old Great Britain international had been with the club for five years - winning two Elite League titles and the British Knockout Cup along the way - after joining from Newcastle Vipers in 2007. Coach Paul Thompson said: “Weaves knows we are going in a different direction next year and he understands that. “He has been a great player for us, a great captain, and he was great to work with. “I want to thank him for everything he did for the Blaze – he was part of two championship-winning teams - and I wish him all the very best for the future.”

tend to agree with u there Biglad, facts point to it, Cov are in bed with steelers, signed a few days ago and cov said they lost weaver then, oh and lets not forget the red herring from simmsy.... Seems steelers are cleaning up as regards the brits available, looks like they are determined next year will again be theirs for the taking, shame panthers seem to be lacking but i will reserve judgement to see what the next few days brings...

BIRBREAR RETURNS TO THE DEVILS April 27, 2012
Max Birbrear has agreed terms to return to the Devils for the 2012-13, we are delighted to announce.
The highly-skilled Israeli power forward, originally hailing from Kazakhstan, has shaken hands with Devils Head Coach Gerad Adams and will put pen to paper in the next few days, says Adams.
Birbraer is the fifth import signing for Elite League Devils, while head coach Gerad Adams is close to agreement on a multi-year contract with a leading British player.
Adams is also in talks with Mark Richardson, while he is working to strengthen British options within the team by signing a player from English Premier League hockey.
Playing for Devils again was always my first option, says Birbraer. Vale Healthcare did a fantastic job medically in terms of my operation and recovery, while the Devils were really supportive throughout.
Cardiff have their ups and downs, but when things like that happen everybody at the club is 100 per cent behind you. I cannot thank everybody enough.
Now I am working hard in the gym, feel fit and am determined to come back next season in the best shape of my life.
Adams said,
'Max is a guy who is so valuable to the club. His leadership, commitment to our systems and attitude and the way he brings on our young players is a real bonus to the fact that he is easily one of the most talented players in our League. He can do everything, and he can do it at top speed which is rare.'
This commitment was highlighted recently, when Birbraer utilised his time due to injury in contacting yet-to-renew Season Ticket holders by phone to talk about coming back to the Devils and discuss ways we can improve their experience as Devils fans.
Bench Coach Neil Francis added:
'We all feel like we know Max very well and this is a great fit for all of us, but sometimes it's worth remembering jsut how good a player he is and how he can change a game with a timely goal or one of his trademark thunderous open-ice hits.'
Confirmed players for next season:
Import players: Max Birbraer, Phil Osaer (nm), Kenton Smith, Mark Smith, Gerad Adams.
British players: Ben Davies, Josh Batch, Bari McKenzie, Adam Harding, Luke Piggott.
