"Andy French, Ice Hockey UK’s general secretary, added: “We had a long list of high-calibre applicants and it was a very strong field of candidates"" Hmm, 5+game, Mr French seems to disagree!! I read somewhere that Hand wasn't even the first to be offered the job, but let's see, eh? Might turn out to be spot on. Of course, what really needs to happen if anyone in the GB hierarchy wants to see the team improve is to put more funds in, regardless of who is coach. < Yeah, right-o Stedders. I'm sure they'll get on that job this minute!!>

I think this is a step backwards for team GB after the work Thommo and Wilson did.

Well if he carries on developing Brits in the way he assisted Lacho when he was at Manchester, I think it could be a good move.

Who cares, who really cares. Plenty of us, HL... not that you seem to give a damn. Can't we tell... you don't even want us IN this country! Like it or not, HL - this is the 'Talk Hockey' forum... and we're talking hockey. If you don't like it, don't read it (the clue is in the thread title ). If you don't like subjects like this being on the forum... hell, what are you even doing here anyway - shouldn't you be on a KHL forum somewhere?

Taking a proper look at this... the main concern surely has to be not his coaching ability (undetermined at that level, also undetermined as anything but a player/coach) but his actual ability to do both jobs. At least Paul Thompson coached in the EIHL (where most of the best British players are) and so got to see them a lot. TH doesn't and won't. Plus, due to the EIHA's long-standing stupidity of holding their play-off finals weekend at the same time as the Worlds... if the Manchester Phoenix qualify for the finals weekend (and there's no reason to suspect they won't) them what's TH going to do? Dump his club and go to the Worlds? (and abandon them whilst coaching the very short pre-tournament 'training camp') - or see the Phoenix through to the end and rely on others to take up the slack for him?
Lots of questions to be answered...

In the interview last week on Sky Thomo gave sound reasons that he could not do both jobs. However there was a bit of a parting shot to the effect that the establishment would be pleased to see the back of him. That is a pity if that is the case.

As Shaggy said AND will he stay in there if we fail badly at this important time? The next Worlds are important to keep our position.

Let's just hope he doesn't pick any panthers players, let them concentrate on winning games for Nottingham. Pick pease instead.
