Having just read through some articles on BIH, I've come across this The Edinburgh Capitals Ice Hockey Club are offering a 50% discount to season tickets holders of all Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League teams this weekend. The season ticket holders need to provide proof of their identification and show their season ticket to qualify for the discount. The Capitals have two home games this weekend against the Belfast Giants with both face offs scheduled for 6.00pm on Saturday and Sunday. A Capitals spokesman said: "We would like to encourage as many sports fans to come to the games this weekend and experience the atmosphere of a Capitals v Giants double header. Despite the weather the Giants fans are travelling in numbers and the weekend is always a great spectacle of hockey and a great party for the fans." "Safety comes first when deciding to travel and we encourage all fans to prepare and look at all options when deciding to come to the games. Local transport, taxi's and the healthy option of walking are all alternatives to perhaps digging the car out of the snow but we are confident it will be worth the effort." There has been a big effort from Murrayfield Ice Rink staff to ensure the rink and car park is prepared for the weekend and the Capitals look forward to welcoming the Giants, their fans and ex Edinburgh Coach Doug Christiansen to Edinburgh for the games. Edinburgh Capitals Ice Hockey Team play in the UK's top flight, the Elite Ice Hockey League. Ice hockey is a fast and exciting game with goals hits and action for the full sixty minutes. Split into three twenty minute periods where the whistle stops the clock you can expect to spend approximately ninety to one hundred and twenty minutes watching the hottest game on ice. Tickets can be purchased on the night of the game at the box office or online at edinburgh-capitals.com/shop/catalog.php?category=TicketsI just thought it was a brilliant idea by the caps to get some new fans into Murrayfield. So well done Caps and lets hope it has a positive long term impact!

It's a great idea but as I've mentioned on THF, I'm not convinced it's being marketed to the right audience. Putting it on THF and BIH is great, they're read by hockey fans and those fans, if also football fans will probably post it on their team's forum. However, to reach enough football fans who don't usually consider ice hockey, it really needs to get onto the home pages of the various websites for those teams and leagues and as a one liner in the weekend events (and or sports) part of the local radio listings.

If they can get a few ads in the city centre or on the radio or local news then it could be a sucess

Agreed, it could be a great marketing ploy - just as long as the Hibs and Hearts fans don't decide to have an indoor punch-up between periods, just to liven proceedings up - or even to keep themselves warm!

No football this weekend in Scotland with all the snow and ice around, with the correct marketing some of the footy fans could be persuaded to give the hockey a try.

True but they only really announced yestersay/today that fixtures would be off. If they get 20 more fans in because of it then its not a bad thing!

Superb idea in my opinion. Find it difficult to comment on marketing etc as I don't live in Scotland and don't read their newspapers or walk their streets etc but I'm fairly sure they would have done it properly after the expense of making sure everything was perfect for new fans etc.
After the well known details of the problems in Newcastle I think this can do nothing but benefit the Caps and hopefully get a few more through the door.
It seems the Vipers are in serious trouble and may not make another season in the EIHL and ideas like this may just help the sustainability of a dwindelling league.
Good for them for coming up with the concept. An Idea many smaller Ice Hockey Clubs throughout the UK may think about copying.
Well done Caps!!!!

The only thing I would disagree with is saying that it's a dwindling league. It's the largest league we have had for ages with 2 new teams this season. Both doing OK by all accounts.

Can't find a link but apparently a similar promotion was carried out by the Vipers and Newcastle United at the start of the season.

I suspect the ticket thingy got the same response.

Thats fair enough. I was mainly talking about the last few years to be honest. We have lost as many teams as we have gained and again look like we may lose another team. Not getting into details as to why I think the league needs to be restructured etc as it's been done to death but I really think a fresh look at things is required and this whole concept seems a fresh idea to me and I really hope it works out for the Caps. Hockey is a game that the majority either love or hate. Finger crossed they can get an extra 100/200 fans in who love it and then ideally through word of mouth can continue to buils numbers etc. My only concern is that they have chosen to do it for two games both of which I think they will be beaten quite badly in. P.s Thanks for the 99% agreement, doesn't often happen to me on here haha

Too add to this.............
Its a famous saying in parts of Edinburgh but if you can make it to Murrayfield on Saturday you really can have your tea (or coffee)
Free Tea and Coffee Edinburgh Capitals and Murrayfield Ice Rink are offering all fans a free tea or coffee at Saturdays home game against Belfast Giants at 6pm. Martin Cingel Capitals Captain said, "It is a nice gesture from the rink and the club to offer something back for the fans effort to come to the games. Despite the weather we are still hoping for a good turnout as people are now beginning to adapt and get on with things." "The snow had a big impact last week on our Braehead game and we had a fantastic win and we hope to get a lot of fans to support us in a big double header weekend for the team." "Hopefully the fans wont need the hot drinks to keep warm as we are hoping for a very exciting game against the Belfast Giants. A Capitals spokesman said, "We had looked forward to a good run of home games over the festive period with good gates and local rivalries but again face unexpected challenges and hurdles. The weather had a big impact on last weekends gate but all credit to the guys for turning in a great performance". "The Capitals would like to thank Murrayfield Ice Rink for their support in supplying this gesture to fans.

That's a couple of good ideas from the Caps there... hope they work. I just hope that they get the message out to enough people... from everything I've seen and heard, that's where their marketing tends to fall down... but good luck to them!

Well done to Edinburgh for trying a couple of things out.
The half price to football fans could be very rewarding if done correctly.
