Don't know wether this is a one off or not but we will have two dutch officials in the home games of Hull on saturday and Coventry on sunday. They are referee Paul de Brabander and linesman Jeroen Hesselberth, both have officiated at IIHF competitions. Any idea why they are here ?
I know we had some dutch officials back in the early eighties (Stef could enlighten us) but I don't know how many games they did or of their standard.

Nico Toemen was one of the Dutch refs in the 90s. He was by far the best referee we had back then. I'm sure he'd be the best we have if he was still here now. He had a rapport with the players, he seemed to understand the flow of the game, when to let the players get on with it, when to call tough penalties to calm the game down, and generally, I think, he was appreciated by the fans for letting the sport be played in the right spirit, without trying to catch the limelight. He was also famously mic'd up for one live BBC or Sky game, and he used some... colourful interpretation of the English language. They cut the mic not long after :-)
It was a shame when he went back home.

Are you sure this was Toeman i thought it was Kirkham (wasnt the phrase he used 'i dont make the f**king rules up'), i dont think Toeman was still refing then.

Stop! What are you doing? You cant rush into a check like this. The players head is down and he does not have control of the puck. When the dutch referee a game they take their time, and so must you.

Kirkham may have been caught out at a later date (it rings a bell, but I can't be certain), but the one I'm thinking of was definitely Toemen. A word relating to bovine faeces was repeated twice, as the ref was telling a player to not bother moaning at him :-) It was only really remarkable as I'm fairly sure this was live on the BBC on a saturday/sunday afternoon, and the commentator had to apologise to the viewers. Nowadays they probably use worse language on teatime TV.

It was Toeman who was mic'd up on the BBC who, after one fragrant flow of words, couldn't mute him fast enough. Perhaps he could come out of retirement as I'm sure he could a better job now that some of the current crop of stripeys.

Which just goes to show how we all see things differently...........

The level playing field that is the Elite league takes another sharp incline.
This is mad? i could under stand in happening for a friendly, but a league game? crazy!
Don't they think these things through?

This was the Nico Toemen era and every now and then he would bring Dutch refs over to do a few games, and these are three of them: Chris van Agtmael, John van Gool and Jan Splinter. I seem to remember a guy called Ad Stuiver reffed a few games as well.

Apparently Furby, who is now playing in Holland rates all the Dutch refs as poorer than UK refs. One of his recent comments was "give me Carson anyday" Although, he was a Shuff player ;D

Could be a ploy from the EIHL to show us even worse refs and then make us be grateful we only have mildy sh!te refs to put up with each week.

Glad its not us that gets the Dutch referees simply because Euro Hockey isnt like our hockey and Lepine would end up getting banned for life by their rules!

I remember writing an article in Powerplay back in 2004 (A Q&A with Mike Hicks) and I asked him whether the league should investigate 'pooling' officials from France, Belgium, Holland and here in the UK.
Is Marco Coenan Dutch?
