Once again, I thought Lepine's check was perfectly OK last night. However, several people stated that they thought the correct call was made 'as per the rulebook' It sure seems that this is turning into a non contact sport

To be fair its not just an issue in the EIHL, for the last few seasons the NHL has been blighted with poor calls for good hits. The pressure is being put on officials to 'protect' players and many seem to be erring on the side of caution.
Of course the generally poor quality of referees in this country doesn't help, many it seems wouldn't know a good hit if it smacked them in the face, but its not an EIHL only problem.

It was probably because the Viper lost his helmet that it looked high. Whether that was because SSmith made the correct call, he lost his helmet as he hit the ice or an equipment problem I don't know. I would like to see the call again though- everyone (myself included) has said it looked clean, but thats on one view. I wouldn't be surprised if it was high.
The thing is when a big hit like that goes in, everyone says its clean because everyone wants to see bigger hits. But that doesn't mean the big illegal hits should go unpunished.
As I say, it looked clean, but until I get a second look I wouldn't put any money on it.

Initial view was it was clean but it's impossible to say without seeing it again which in itself probably acts in Smith's defence. At the end fo the day I suppose Smith's job is to err on the side of caution. Lepine did lean into the hit and his shoulder may well have connected with Hartmanis's head, if it did then it was the right call. If it didn't then, in my opinion, the correct call would have been inteference as I don't think Hartmanis had the puck.

Yawn. I said the refs would ruin the season way back in the summer. Can't we just have a sticky in the forum to stop similar threads to this all year?
Something like:
Yes, we know the referees are useless and they are ruining games because of their inability to call good hits correctly.

Theres instruction from the league to come down on these 'checks to the head'. So the end result is that the refs are more likely to get themselves into this debate because they dont want to be seen as ignoring the 'rule'.Therefore, a few 'cleans' will come into it, I think.

Does seem like we're becoming a non-contact league, just hoping this doesn't lead to players "making the most of it" should they get checked.

Perfect hit, Vipers guy milked it.
Where was the instegator on Langdon?
Ref sees a player down, fills his trousers again. If Le pine goes off for 10, the Vipers guy should go for 10 also to check he isn't brain damaged. LOL!
I await the 4 game ban. F'in Joke. if they want to look at a video I surgest they look at Stewart spearing Penner in the nuts. Felt sorry for Landon having to stand up for these puss's.

I've heard that a player is not allowed to hit the deck a bit dazed when hit by a huge check - whether legal or not. Milking it for sure. I've also heard it was a borderline hit. I reckon it was borderline fair, as most people I have spoken did, but the ref, who has clearly seen the rules that everyone on hear bleats about not seeing so much, thought it as borderline unfair. Most people think they want a second view, because they were watching the puck, which is not where the hit was. Maybe thats why Hartmanis wasn't expecting the hit and fell to the ground like a house of cards. But no, he was milking it. Defiantly. Thems the breaks. I'm sure it affected the result a lot, because during the time he was off the Vipers were all over the panthers. Oh. No. Wait. We suck so much that even when you guys are down a guy we have neither the quality or quantity to make a difference. You know what you are gonna get with Stewart - a wind up merchant. Was on the other side of the rink so in an Arsene Wenger style I didnt see the spear, but i saw as many penalties not called on the Vipers as not called on the Panthers. For example, the penalty that lead to the PP that you scored your last goal (I think) looked very harsh when Forsbacka was dragged down in the same way a couple of minutes later.

Is this the same ref who called us for too many men when we had 4 players on the ice? LOL! Funny how as soon as the penalty is called he makes a quick recovery? Can't stand a beautiful hit like that getting punished, ruining Hockey with that sort of call.
Maybe they should say 'you can only play in the Elite League if you are 6ft2' anyone taller or shorter is not allowed? it's the only way they'll not make head contact.
Why do you think Langdon had to fight Penner? Stewart speared him in the nuts, Penner went mental and chased after Stewart, Poor old Langdon had to get inbetween and face another battering.
Was a defo pen when Forsbacka was dragged back, another one missed.

Wasn't it Matt Myers that checked Dean Smith during that game? Good hit, I thought... although not hard enough! ;D
