Kralj takes Morzine opportunity
Following a highly successful first season in the Elite League, the Mobilx Newcastle Vipers can today confirm that Matic Kralj has accepted an offer from France for the 2010/11 season. The Slovenian forward has agreed to join Morzine-Avoriaz of the French Ligue Magnus after finishing the regular season as the Vipers top points scorer with 29 goals and 41 assists in 55 games. Vipers head coach Rob Wilson today thanked Kralj for his efforts: "When we signed Matic we knew we were getting a good player but he turned out to be a real surprise package. He's been up there all season in terms of points and deserves this move to France. We knew he was coming to Newcastle to help put himself in the shop window and in recent weeks we've been trying to help him out as he looks to progress on with his career. We'd all like to thank Matic for his efforts during the 2009/10 season and wish him all the best with Morzine."

Calder to take final bow at the Skydome on SundayCoventry Blaze captain, Adam Calder will make his final home ice appearance for the club this Sunday, when the Elite League Champions take on Hull Stingrays in the second leg of the Elite League Play Off quarter finals. The Canadian sharpshooter will also celebrate his thirty-fourth birthday on Sunday and the game will bring to an end an incredible six year career on the Skydome ice. In nearly four hundred games for the Blaze, Calder has posted over 250 goals including this season’s League Championship winning goal in Edinburgh last Saturday. Calder is expected to be named as the Player/Coach of new Elite League club, Braehead Clan once this current season is complete, an opportunity that Blaze Head Coach, Paul Thompson says that his captain more than deserves. “At this stage of his career, it’s a wonderful opportunity for him and whilst I’m sad to be losing him, he’s left a great legacy here. He’s always liked the idea of moving into coaching at some point and this is an ideal chance for him to take that next step. He knows it’s going to be a big change for him but he’s up for it.” Calder joined the Blaze at the start of the 2004/05 season and apart from a short spell in Sweden, has spent six years in Coventry. During that time he has helped the team to eight major trophies including four Elite League titles, two Challenge Cups, One Knockout Cup and one Play Off Championship. He is the Elite League’s all time leading scorer and has won a host of major honours including being named the Elite League’s Player of the Season in 2007/08. “He’s been a franchise player for this club since he came here,” added Thompson. “And we have been very lucky to have had his on and off ice presence here for so many years. I wish him all the best. “This Sunday will be the last chance for Blaze fans to see Calds on the ice at the Skydome in a Coventry shirt and hopefully we’ll have a big crowd to give him the send off he deserves.” Blaze take on Hull Stingrays at the Skydome Arena this Sunday at 6pm. Tickets are on sale now from the box office by calling 02476 630693 or can be booked online via the Blaze website – www.coventryblaze.co.uk

Excellent. Of all the players I love to hate Phillips ranks right up there at the top so seeing him in a Squealers uniform fits perfectly.

Guys... can we keep this thread on topic, please? The Myers-vs-Philips thing could run for several pages... if it's that interesting and you want to keep discussing it, keep it to a seperate thread please.

Ok guys as with Shaggy can we please keep this on topic. I have just deleted all the irrelevant posts on this now that the Phillips vs Myers saga has its own thread.

I should hope that's not the case... aren't clubs barred from talking to another EIHL club's players until a certain time after the end of the season (inc. play-offs)? Oh wait... what am I saying - EIHL clubs, rules? I'll get me coat...

Wasn't Adam Calder announced as Braehead player-coach long before the end of the season? Or is that still not official?
Edit: Having checked various news sources, it's official that Adam is leaving Coventry, but Braehead's site doesn't list anything to do with his signing other than a news article about Coventry winning the league titled "Calder Seals the Title" and the Blaze's news says that Calder is 'expected to be signed as Braehead Player-Coach". Open secret then.

O'Connor returns to Vipers fold as ChairmanTwenty four hours after the end of their season, and a week on from announcing that Rob Wilson was standing down as coach, the Mobilx Newcastle Vipers have confirmed that Paddy O'Connor is returning to the club as Chairman after a three-year absence. O'Connor was part of the initial ownership group who took over the club in 2005 alongside Paul Ferone and Rob Wilson. A former player with Durham, Telford and Sheffield, O'Connor stood down at the end of the club's second season in the Elite League to pursue his outside business interest. Now O'Connor feels it's right to return to the fold. "Even though I resigned as a director, I have kept in touch from a distance, and always followed the goings on in the club. Rob and Paul are very close friends, and we took the project on together. "My situation now allows me the time to come back and take a more active role once again, and I can't wait to be involved. "This season has been a tough one but the business has come through and survived. Going forward next year with a new coach it's like a fresh start and I'm really excited, as I was five years ago when we started. "I have learned that you never say never especially in sport and I'm delighted that I am in a position where I can help the club move forward and hopefully reach its full potential." O'Connor will join General Manager Jaimie Longmuir at an open forum on Wednesday 31 March at the Hilton NewcastleGateshead to talk about the season just ended and the plans for moving forward. All fans are welcome at the event which starts at 7.30pm and we would ask as many fans as possible to attend this important event. Day to day operation and management of the club will be assumed by General Manager Jaimie Longmuir and Chairman Paddy O'Connor. Longmuir said: "Paddy's return strengthens the club in a big way and his enthusiasm for the sport is fantastic as it rubs off on everyone around the club. I'm pleased he is back in a permanent capacity as club Chairman. "It can only be a good thing for the Vipers now and going forward. I look forward to working with Paddy again and hopefully realising the ambition of the club reaching its full potential on and off the ice as we move forward." Thats rich about the Steelers having their own rules. I thought it was Nottingham that ran the league now, according to decisions made in the leagues board room meetings.

Jeez, a quick morning scout of the threads and you've made the usual chip on the shoulder Steeler comment on practically all of them. Those grapes tasting decidedly sour in the run up to the weekend? Remind me again, which teams are at the finals weekend?
