Boom Boom's back!

Max Birbraer, Devils top scorer from last season, has re-signed for 2010/11
Max 'Boom Boom' Birbraer has rejoined the Cardiff Devils for the 2010/11 season and is hungry for more.

Devils joint top goal and leading points' scorer last season Birbraer, is pleased to have settled on a deal early in the off season. He has this to say:

"I don't usually sign up this fast, so it's an indication of how keen I was to get back into it here in Cardiff and improve on last season. I think I had a good year but with a stronger team, better attitude towards team goals and hard work we can erase those nasty losses in the finals from our memory and bring success to Cardiff."

Head coach Adams moved quickly to sign up one of the most skilful import players in the league who scores goals, works hard and is known for levelling opponents with some punishing hits. Later today Devils TV will air the interview with Max where he tells us about coming back to Cardiff and how he and all the returning Devils have "unfinished business" as far as trophies are concerned.

The extremely popular and charismatic Khazakstan native, born in Ust Kamenogorsk, speaks several languages and has travelled extensively, is an outstanding addition to the line-up and has been described as 'unplayable' by many observers. His combination of speed, skill and strength will once again have opposing EIHL defenders and goalies worried about where he is at all times.

In other team news, the Devils will be having a new-look defence for sure this year asbig defenceman Mike Hartwick and the tough Scott Romfo leave the team. Hartwick, an Ivy league graduate will pursue a career outside of hockey while Romfo, also an MBA, will also move on from the devils after their studies finish.

Also not returning for the Devils will be forward Mark Smith. Smith, an electrifying skater and stick handler, struggled with a knee injury throughout last season and will now consider his options for the future.

The Cardiff Devils would like to thank Mike, Scott and Mark for their efforts in their time here and wish them all the very best for the future.

Adams will unveil more team news in the coming weeks as he works from across the globe, whilst taking a break after the long grind of the season. In constant contact with agents, players and the Devils staff, Adams says he will have more 'exciting' player news before too long with at least one additional signing - a new player to the EIHL - done and dusted.

Tait Confirmed as New Player Assistant

With Doug Sheppard leaving his role as player assistant coach David Matsos has confirmed that Ashley Tait will now fill that position

"When we first spoke with Ash he confirmed that he would like and enjoy a bigger role at the club and the position of player assistant coach excited him. Back then a decision hadn't been taken on Doug Sheppards future and there was a thought process of them both holding that position. However with Shepp now moving on I can confirm that Ashley will be my sole player assistant next season

"Ash brings many qualities, his intensity and desire is without question, he makes those around him better and that kind of leadership is priceless"

Ben O'Connor has joined French side Morzine:

Following much soul searching Ben O'Connor has decided to take a job with Morzine in France for the 10/11 season. O'Connor had a fantastic season with the Capitals helping them achieve their best ever season finish in the Elite Ice Hockey League.

O'Connor commented, "I have had a great time in Edinburgh and this season just passed has obviously opened doors for me and now allows me to take my skills into Europe. I will miss the Capitals and the fans but this was a move I had to make to move my career on."

Scott Neil, Edinburgh Capitals General Manager, said, "Ben was all set to come back but we had always agreed that if an opportunity arose for him to experience North America or Europe we would not stand in his way. We wish Ben good luck in his new role

Ben Davies ready to stake Cardiff Devils claim

TEENAGER Ben Davies will be given the chance to show he can be an Elite League ice hockey hit for Cardiff Devils in 2010-11.

The former Bishop of Llandaff School pupil has been offered a new Devils contract – and the chance to make a third line wing position his own.

English forward Matt Towe, a member of the Great Britain squad for their World Championship campaign in Slovenia later this month, will not be back with the Devils next season.

There has been no official announcement, but Towe moved out of his flat in Cardiff this week saying he would not be with the Devils next season.

That opens the way for a British forward to fill the ninth forward slot and talented Cardiff-born forward Davies, who combines ice hockey with his work at Specsavers in Bridgend, is keen to stake a claim.

Cardiff Devils have now confirmed six signings for next season and they are netminder Stevie Lyle, Ryan Finnerty, Max Birbraer, Gerad Adams, Phil Hill and Mark Richardson.

Another two imports have agreed terms and will be announced within the next week or so when all official paperwork has been completed.

All Elite League teams can include 11 import players in their teams for next season and Devils’ player-coach Gerad Adams will include himself in a full roster.

Matsos Signs Jerramie Domish

The Sheffield Steelers have confirmed the signing of 30 year old defenceman Jerramie Domish from the Newcastle Vipers on an initial one year contract

Domish scored 28 points in his first year in the Elite League and in doing so caught the eye of several of the leagues big clubs, Steelers head coach David Matsos though managed to pull off the signing and confirmed the news today saying "It was a tough battle to bring Jerramie here but one we were confident of winning once we explained our plans and ambitions to him

"I rate Jerramie very highly, I rate him as high as a Neal Martin, in fact I see many similarities to Martin. He skates so well and has the ability to skate the puck out of trouble. He can turn defence into offence in a blink of the eye

"I think Domish was a shining light last season for Newcastle, he was a threat every time we played against them.

Dowd Back To Win Again

Robert Dowd stressed that the main reason behind his return to the Sheffield Steelers for a 3rd season was the desire to win again

"We have had two very different years, the first season we won it all and last year we didn't win very much at all." said Dowd "I know which season I preferred and the main reason for me agreeing to come back for another season is to experiance that winning feeling here in Sheffield

"Sheffield is my home now, I will spend the summer here working on being at my very best for when the season begins. There is no better place to play than at the Arena and no better feeling than winning trophies for the Steelers and the fans. Last year was a major disappointment for us all, coaches, players and supporters and I think there is a desire from everyone at the club to bounce back with a bang and show the doubters that we are still the number one club in this League

"Dave (Head Coach David Matsos) has brought back some great experienced players and from what I hear they will be joined by some big name, big game players that will help us achieve that winning target once again"

For his part Matsos was delighted to have signed one of the British games top young players "You can't replace a Robert Dowd, he can change a game for you. He is a special talent. He had a tough start to his 2nd season, maybe other teams had found him out a little and he had to change his game. From Christmas home though he was back to his Dowdy brilliance and one of our best players every night

"In bringing Rob back we are retaining the players we want to build the foundation of the team on, we have a couple of others to finalise and then will add some new, exciting and fresh blood into the 2010-11 Steelers"

The LBM Belfast Giants will have a new coach next season, and his name is Doug Christiansen. The 31 year old from Milwaukee, Wisconsin will take over from the departing Steve Thornton who has accepted a job offer outside of hockey in his hometown of Ottawa, Canada.
