Taken from todays Evening Post......."Coach Mike Ellis will pull on his skates for the next five games as Nottingham Panthers bid to get back on the winning trail. Classed as an import, he will replace Sean McAslan, who injured a knee during the penalty shots defeat against Sheffield last weekend." to me this is again an easy CHEAP option a la ceman last year it is obvious that the team would benefit from a shakeup and bringing in a new player even temporarily would do just that but the panthers and ellis have "decided" not to do that but just play the coach who by everyones account isnt up to the job. It seems to suggest that the players are safe regardless of the performance they put in and it is obvious that this plainly isnt good enough right now..... isnt it?
And after such a good start to the season too, bit of a waste imho.

but just play the coach who by everyones account isnt up to the job. Everyone? Really? You sure about that? How about asking those that have actually seen him play this season instead of just assuming.

I dont think you can compare the Ellis that played in the CC against what he will be like in the Challenge Cup and league games. The games he is registered to play will be ten times as competitive. He was still playing for GB 6 months ago.

Another way to look at it is that whilst de-registered, as far as I know McAslan's wages won't be counting towards the wage cap.
I'm assuming he's one of the top earners, and that we always spend dead on the wage cap.
Therefore, if Ellis covers this time, then it leaves us more in the pot to sign cover later in the season when the inevitable injuries happen then - and they may be longer term ones.

I believe the definition of import is a player who hasn't been trained in the British developmental system rather than someone not holding a British passport.

He looks a damn sight quicker than most of our players, and certainly looked like he was up for playing properly. Not one person who talked about Ellis in France thought he looked out of place, and certainly no-one said he didn't look up to the job.

Ellis is still a very good player he could easily still be playing if he wanted too he will also lead by example and will probably bring some energy back into the line up.

I was sticking up for you Peacock! I think its a good move by the club and have faith in his ability. Why would a top class forward who is suddenly available in time for this weekend (work permits et all) want to sign for us for a few weeks anyway?

I would reserve judgement if I were you!

if you dont think ellis is up for it just look at his stats from the previous few seasons. I know you might say that it's all done in lower leagues but say you half his stats then, still pretty good going.
As a stand in i think he will be fantastic.
Stats from last season
Bracknell Bees English National Premier League Cup 05/06 5 1 2 3 2 Bracknell Bees English National Premier League 05/06 46 34 40 74 34 8 3 5 8 4

At this moment in time , I think that Mike Ellis has made a good choice in playing himself for the next 5 games .
he knows the Game plan having been with this group of players from the start , he is not just a coach but one of the team .
Bringing in a new player can be Negative as it may take up to 6 games to click with the Team for example last season In dan cemans case he never clicked !
Having watched Mike Ellis play in France , I know he will do the JOB .

Don't forget that of these 'lower' leagues, Petricko, Meyers, Krajicek, Lyndsey, Clarke (and maybe Myers) all played and starred. And thats just from your lot. 99% of teh Brits (Murphy, Hand, Tait, Johnson, Longstaff, Weaver etc) played there. Arguably the second best lockout (Witt) and the only NHL lockout with more points than Pims (oliver) played there. All bar Koenig Cornish and Payette of our champioship team played in it. I heard a lot of BNL bashing when it was still a league, and nearly all of it was unfair. It's also worth pointing out that save percentage wise, the countries leading goalie played in the ENL.
Ellis was a pure quality player, and he will be again.

i wasnt really hitting at the league myself, cause to me ive seen the odd EPL game and i found them just as exciting as some elite games, also in the back of my mind was that alot of players have come and played in the BNL and EPL for those teams as either brits or imports and found the "step up" as easy as lacing up a skate.
So for Ellis skating and scoring for the panthers will be dynamite!

Hope he can win face-offs and quarterback the powerplay as well. If he can, sign him up for the season!

Didn't do too badly tonight. Certainly didn't look to me as if he hadn't been playing much this season! Should have got our man of the match award in my opinion. More of the same tommorow please Mike (from you - deffinatley not more of the same from most of the rest!)

haha yeah the players do need to bug up and play hard and fast like pre conti cup, but as for ellis he certainly looked like he tried and was hitting and moving the puck like he hadn't had a 7 month break from pro play was good to watch him play.
