Got the recent copy of the Ice-Times from the IIHF.
The last issue just summed up World and Olympic detail.
In this last issue there is some interesting stuff to ponder on.
After mentioning that the ZT (as we know of it) is not that (as reporters like to describe) but 'low tolorence' and started mid season last year on the continent. It moves on to say that Malaysia have been adopted as new members to the association.
Did you know that Serbia and Montenegro are no more? Serbia took its membership as Montenegro became a country of its own apparently.
The 2008 Worlds will be in Quebec City,Quebec and Halifax,Nova Scocia on May 1-18.
I think most of you will know that Steve McKenna is serving as Australias coaching bid at the next 2007 Seoul Div 2 tournament.
In ITC's last season...(NHL tansfers not inc..) Canada was the largest exporter (801 almost 20% of all) and Germany importing most (602) at nearly 15% of the import total.GB sent out 81 and received 224 apparently. The totals tally at 4104 moving players in and out of countries but look at those stats of ours.....
USA won the In-Line Hockey Gold medal and in the next division down we won the GOLD (would you believe it?) again after winning it in 2004 also. So why did we win the 2005 BRONZE in that same league? Must have not been promoted is all I can say.
WE know that the top 6 Euro nations ( determined by the IIHF rankings) play out the European Champions Cup. But the Continental Cup , which has 19 teams over 6 rounds has 3 teams placed into the Super Final in Hungary awaiting ONE team from those 19 to join them. A bit like Manchester Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal awaiting the FA cup qualifier from the rest to meet them in a final stage. No wonder Nottingham fans conceed its not worth playing at times.
Yes folks Mongolia ( a new member to the Ice-Hockey family) are to travel to Ireland and play it's first 'real' IIHF championship v Ireland in on April 15th. Under 3 million population and only 840 registered players.12 rinks , all outside at -20 to -30 degress (Ireland will be warm then)....what chance have they got?
Now then taken from the IIHF 05-06 Annual Report GB......have 8401 registered players (13th overall ), 3647 senior (12th ), 254 male referees (12th ), 44 indoor rinks ( 12th ), in a population of 60,609,153 people (9th ).
Question is should we be doing better?
Pretty equal placings apart from we have a good population to recruit from.France have a similar population count and have 128 rinks but 83 refs, 17,056 registered players of which 5605 are male. France are ranked 19th, we are 31st.
Did you know that the IIHF had a pool of allowed suppliers by the Marketing Department? there are 4 new ones to this season till 2010 Frontier Hockey,Warrior Hockey,Fischer and Tackla to add to the other well knowns.
After our noted 60th anniversary from when we first had our games. Heres a happy anniversary to South Africa and Kazakhstan 70 and 50 association years old.
Most importantly though the IIHF is 100 on 29th feb 2008.It will be 'International Day of Ice-Hockey'.I wonder how we may help celebrate that one?
