Not sure if anyone knows the answers on here (Stef?)
Firstly, why do they turn the lights out in the intervals in the seated area? If you sit near the back of the block its too dark to read your programme (so I dont bother getting one any more) and sometimes the lighting isnt very good on the steps.
Secondly, at the end of the period, why do they put 12 minutes on the clock, and then not start it for about another three or four?
Thanks in advance for any insightful info!

I have been asked both questions. Is it possible to save cost on lowering the lights? But as you say safety and a programme read are reasons to leave them as they are. As regards the 12 minutes, we have also thought why not put 15 up, less there is a logical reason.....Stef?

you are hard pressed to concentrate or even chat in the breaks with that idiot on the mike whittering on for at least half the time... god he is so annoying, dont we get to hear our sponsors enough during the game without filling the breaks with them too?

True, but if it encourages someone to shove a few quid the panthers way then it's arguably a necessary evil?

There's no breaks in the delivery, he just charges from one advert to the next without drawing breath so the whole thing ends up as a constant barrage that I'm almost certain 3/4s of the people mentally tune out from. If I was a sponsor I wouldn't be overly impressed with how what I have paid for and been promised (I assume) as part of the sponsorship deal was being done. If I've paid the Panthers for the advert I'd want it separated and clearly discernible as being different from the others not just thrown out like some after thought.

Was just making the point. I imagine most sponsors are involved because someone, director / owner etc is a fan. If I was at the game and heard my company being advertised in that way i'd be on to Mr Moran in a flash. However I have no idea how much they pay for that particular piece of advertising which is presumeably part of a wider package. Personally though, if we're talking about things being annoying, i'd put the fact that neither the announcer, DJ (or whatever he is) or even our GM, seem able to grasp the fact that Nottingham has two Ts in the middle and not two Ds. Petty maybe but it riles me every game. They are not the Noddingham Panthers! We can perhaps forgive GM the GM as it's a North East thing but the other two are locals!

Secondly, at the end of the period, why do they put 12 minutes on the clock, and then not start it for about another three or four? That's all to do with having inter-period entertainment such as figure skaters, shoot-outs etc. We used to put 15 on the clock and start it straight away, but you could never be sure how long the entertainments would take. You can be pretty sure how long the zamboni takes, so we took to setting the clock at 12 and once the entertainment finished and the zamboni was under way, set it going then.

Not sure you ever have the need to use the name Nottingham do you Stef? Give the other two a nudge though and point out the error of their ways :-)

id assume (may be wrong) that its up in the control box thing above block 10.
a guy I used to work with did at one point have something to do with the lights. dunno if its just the spots and panthers logo 'match night' stuff from up there or the lighting overall?

I would imagine that the lights going down would be for atmosphere (or that is the intention).
If you travel around the country about 99% of the verbal sponsor advertising is pretty amateur. The better (more effective and more professional) the sponsor advertising is the more sponsors will want to come on board and this would mean more money.
So many little areas could be tweaked just a bit to bring in a lot more revenue in these difficult times.

Is it possible to save cost on lowering the lights? If we wanted to save costs then we wouldn't bother signing a fancy dan import as injury cover................. ;D

As regard cost, I'm pretty certain the lights don't actually go off, they just have mechanical covers that go over them. Those type of spotlights usually need 20 mins to cool down before they can be switched on again, so I'm sure they have to leave them on.
Which leads me to, and everyone else to why dim them?
