Not been to the NIC for a while and I just wondered if anyone had any comments about the ice surface , from where I was sitting I was amazed at how slow the surface seemed to get , constantly catching players out when the puck didnt reach them , also it seemed very very uneven particularly near the boards. And talking of which , have they always been that dead ? , looked like they had sponge behind them with the number of times they took all the pace off the puck.

We thought it looked very soft.
Then again it seemed a lot warmer than it normally is in the arena.

May have been down to the Tom Jones concert the previous night. There were certainly some very unusual bounces mid ice and slow puck movement.

I thought against Hull it looked terrible. The bounces your referring to OM are probably the new boards behind the goal where the steelers fans were, they are plastic based not glass plexi and new boards so were noticing a few strange bounces, keeps things intresting tho

I walked across the ice between 2nd and third period to lay the pucks out for the shootout game. It was very cut up and had a fair few really deep chips and grooves. There was a lot of concerts and conversions last week which cant do it any good. Having boards down one day and ice the next for a whole week. Plus the more fans in the arena probably didnt help as its hard for the NIC to anticipate any rise in heat to be able to turn the ice temperature down. But come on, lets not stoop to Steelers level and blame Mr. Jones for a loss!

The surface must have been uneven judging by the number of times pucks hopped over sticks when passes were made, even allowing for our lack of confidence and poor passing.
The temperature in the main arena can be a problem, leading to soft ice. A big crowd in and an unseasonably mild outside temperature no doubt exacerbated the ice condition, which wouldn't have the greatest anyway after the concert schedule.

Its all true, but when you have to go and play on ice surfaces such as Lee Valley last season, and Romford earlier this season, Basingstoke (last time i played there it was awful) and Coventry, you should be used to it to an extent. I know the NIC has been having problems with ice conditions lately as there is an ongoing battle with the Speed clubs who i beleive like the pad temperature around 7 degrees lower than normal to allow for optimal speed skating conditions. Add to that the situation a few weeks back when the ice started to melt to due plant failure along with current weather conditions and a large crowd, and its a recipe for disaster!
I stil say that the Arena ice at the NIC is currently the best surface in the country, and is my 2nd all time best ice surface with the old Nynex ice been the best i have ever played on. The NIC has better ice surfaces than some that i played on when i was playing in Chicago, and that is saying something!

Its not bad in comparison but not as good as what the players are used to I guess.
Id put it second to Hull as iv never skated on the Nynex ice(gutted) but when its good the main pad at ice sheffield is about the same

I thought the surface was OK.
It was the boards I thought giving the odd bounces. Ice was no better or worse than normal
I know also there was public skating on there during the day that finished at half 4. Not that it would have made much difference for 'families only, no hockey skates' session though.
