Just been looking through the stats from the Steelers game, and although Levers MOM was thoroughly deserved, i noticed that he neither scored or had an assist. Apart from a goalie getting it, cant remember that happening before

The match sponsors at the Sheffield game were Red Box Recorders who are also Gold sponsors of Marc Levers.
Sometimes a sponsor will choose the player he wants to be photographed with.

Marc Levers was exceptional and was everywhere last night.
A footballer can get MOM without a gol or assist, so why not an ice hockey player?

Levers has been great all season. I never meant that he didn't deserve the award, he has probably been worthy of one or two this season already.
The point of my post was that the MoM award doesn't necessarily go to the player who had the best game, which is a matter of opinion anyway. It sometimes goes to the player who the match sponsor wants on the photo.

In this particular instance, seeing as I sit right near one of the match sponsors... let's just say to my knowledge it is entirely possible that Marc Levers was not chosen because they are his personal sponsor. I don't think it would be right for me to give out more exact details, I just don't think we can automatically assume that this was the case (don't worry, grumpyminer - wasn't suggesting that you were doing so, just that others might).

It wouldn't be right to NOT award it to Marc just because he was sponsored by the match sponsor.Especially as he may deserve it on merit. I did think someone else was going to get it on the night, yet I don't like the award anyway. Pity we can't have one of those button pressing gadgets to get fans to vote from their seats , like on 'Who wants to be a millionnaire'? Now theres an Arena of the future.

Who cares? they give it to the wrong player 86% of the time anyway.

Marc Levers was exceptional and was everywhere last night. A footballer can get MOM without a gol or assist, so why not an ice hockey player? You mean like when Mark Lawrenson praises the creative attacking play that's been on display for most of the game before giving it to a centre-half? When I was involved in picking MOM awards in the past with the Lions, as Shaggy has, we have tried various things when it came to awarding it. We tried not to just award it to the away goalie every time, although for some of the weak teams the goalie was by far the best player. One season for the Lions we tried to give it to a different player every time, although when Bullas scored four goals, like a natural hat trick with an added bonus, we made an exception. I suggest choosing a different player every time as it makes you think about the game more, thinking about who has worked hard or excelled beyond how they normally play. Once it was awarded to a third liner who, despite not scoring any points, drew penalties every time he carried the puck into the offensive zone, and ultimately the difference between the Lions and the opposition that night were the PP goals. I can't say for definite but I think something similar has happened this season, as even though the more talented of the Levers brothers got a shutout recently, MOM was actually given to an under-18 playing up who had also had a tremendous game. I can't comment on the example of Levers as I wasn't at the game, but I think anyone who picks MOM solely on the basis of goals and assists is taking an easy way out, although as it's only MOM and not Player of the Year it doesn't matter too much.

Do you like the way the yanks do it in the nhl with the 3 stars awarded to the players that (normally) generate the most points on a given night? (home or away)
