He only played in the first season for Panthers then was playing for Ashfield. I was running about for them on a managing job but going to Sutton on the motorbike to training nights was awful. Yes I will get what I can out for you Rich (its all in the loft) and will PM you.

Bursar - am sure the game Fred tried to get his misconduct was against Cleveland Bombers Indeed it was, and here's the game sheet filled in in my own fair hand. It's a bit small, but you can hopefully make out that having helped make the game safe with five goals in the first 27 minutes, Fred spent all of the third period trying to get a 10 minute misconduct. I remember that the ref Tony Dawson, a young lad starting out (wonder what happened to him), knew exactly what Fred was up to and waited until right near the end before dishing out the 10. We thus had the spectacle of a desperate Fred, after finishing a roughing penalty at 55.30, getting another one 11 seconds later at 55.41 with the precious 10 at last added on. Bonkers. The linesman Martin Harris is the renowned historian of British hockey. Some good old names on there. Not come out too bad, has it? When I've got through all my photos I'll have to start a 'sheets from the classic games' thread.

Rich---I'll have all the full names plus more..later, no fear.
Ashfield played all games away and trained ,like you say at home.
Alec (Secretary) did all the arrangements and major paper work.I just added to with Reports by phone to Evening Post and written work to papers etc..stats,programme,, getting trophies sponsored for end of season (Radio Trent ), taking photos of the team- (that actual game played in photo here is versus Trojans at the stadium- Pustzai scored first from about the redline then we went on to lose 12-1, I think).

Sometimes the game is too santatized these days. The hockey maybe better, but sometimes the fun is missing.

In the days of the first incarnation of the Supporters' Club we quickly established a regular, quite large group of us who used to do every away game. We christened ourselves the Nutters on the Bus Society, or NOBS for short. At the end of every season we used to have a vote for our favourite home and away players - The NOBS Awards. We usually managed to present the away award at the Wembley play-offs. After the final we'd go down to the team bench area, talk very nicely to the security blokes and they'd let us through, before going to the dressing room of the winning player and bringing them out for us. If the winner hadn't been playing in the final, we usually managed to fix up a meeting with them on the concourse and present the award there. There were some illustrious winners over the years and I was honoured to be the one to give the little speech and hand the trophy over. I've got photos of some of the awards (can't remember the years. Sorry) Inaugural winner, the great Roy Halpin from Dundee. What a player he was. Steve Salter, also of Dundee but who had played for us for the first part of that season. We were devastated when he left, and he was a bit of a no-brainer for the award, frankly. Craig Melancon, who looked petrified throughout. I think given the reception he generally received in Nottingham he thought it was a trick and we were going to do him over, which is why just out of shot was Peter Quiney, who he brought along as his minder. Us NOBS gather round to present the award to Chris Kelland.......... ..........who looked pretty chuffed to receive it. We also had an award for the most popular NOB from our number, a sort of players' player award. (bit of self indulgence here) I was honoured to win the award one year jointly with Karen Pod, and here we are in the car park at Wembley having been presented with the golden ball-cockerel. You see, whilst it's important to win games, cups, titles, championships etc, when I first became interested in hockey it soon became apparent to me that there is something about the game that in my experience makes the people who play it and the people who watch it almost without exception Decent People. I hope these photos give a flavour of that. Halpin and Kelland had just finished playing in the showpiece final of our sport and were still in their kit (fortunately the photos are not scratch-and-sniff), but while their team-mates were in the shower they came to meet a group of opposition fans who had spent the last seven months trailing up and down the country in all weathers to follow their beloved team and sport, forging friendships home and away, many of which last to this day. So you'll forgive me if I don't get involved in the pages of hand-wringing and finger-pointing on this Forum that follow every defeat: in my view there's more to this game than out-and-out partisanship. It's just, erm, well, different somehow.

RE. Old game Sheet, The wife says the game sheets are 10 times neater than that nowadays It depends on A) whos filled it out B) how straight forward the game is (whether there have been many alterations) C) what is done with the copy after the game I have got copies of games Iv signed as a coach and they wont even scan into the computer they are that bad! OT but did they change the format of the sheets Stef? I know they changed at one point but appear to change back.

OMG Stef please learn how to crop your pics lol. On the pic of Craig Melancon you will notice a very young and handsome ;D future goaljudge that looks like he's wearing an oversized comedy cap. How embarrasing is that lol.

It's just, erm, well, different somehow. Amen to that Stef and long may it continue! I've not yet reached your level of objectivity and phlegmatism (I'm getting there I hope!) but did soon realise there's a whole lot more to hockey than winning. There are some wonderful people involved in the game up and down the country, and as with so many things in life, in the end, it's people who matter. Thoroughly enjoying this thread Stef - you've made a rod for your back you know - we expect much more of the same!

Can remember waving off opposition fans from Wembley weekends as each bus left.
Reference..... Ashfield Islanders, I recall it was Paul Woodhouse's dad Alec that ran the team.

RE. Old game Sheet, The wife says the game sheets are 10 times neater than that nowadays Bit of a babe on the front row in the blue jacket, eh? (Revenge is sweet) Just by way of explanation, when Jamie Crapper was released, us away fans clubbed together and bought his shirt, and this is a photo of when we presented it to him.

It's freezing cold outside, and I don't fancy going to the pub. So let's do what they do quite a bit on the telly these days - a theme night.
Tonight it's Robin Andrew night

Robin Andrew was a pretty darned good defender on a good team, Streatham Redskins. Back in the 1980s, each club had their own rink trophy, for which other sides played the home team by invitation. One season we made the mistake of inviting Streatham to play, and they won. (This one's for you, Fez). Here's our then Chairman Charles Walker looking over the moon to be presenting our home trophy, the Walker Cup, to Robin, who at that time was the captain of our biggest rivals, with similarly ecstatic Panthers fans looking on (4 April 1983).

In 1984/85 Robin signed for us. Here he is in his (then) trademark red (Streatham) shorts, clearing up at the back.

Robin at the heart of our defence joining together with Mike Urquhart to foil a Murrayfield attack. Point of interest - Murrayfield no. 8 on the left is Scott Neil, today Edinburgh's GM, and behind him looks to me like Tony Hand, still playing to great effect today, 25 years later..

Robin doing his job, showing off the legendary helmet he brought with him from Streatham, painted black, and which gradually turned red again as the season wore on.

Now, Robin wasn't one for the rough stuff. In fact, he took very few penalties apart from misconducts when he used to blow up at the refs. But here he is having a word with Durham's Paul Tilley, giving us a fine view of his ancient and hopelessly inadequate aforementioned legendary helmet.
