What a finish!
Lions win 3-2, the GWG being scored by Robert Lachowicz with about 30 seconds left to play... almost a mirror image of the last visit by Billingham when they won it with only a few seconds to spare! With Sheffield and Whitley drawing tonight, and therefore only getting 1 point each, all three of the Lions' closest rivals have dropped points tonight.
Now that's what I call a Xmas present! ;D ;D
(Lacho got the first goal as well, the second Lions marker being put away by MoM Stewart Bliss). Rich Griffiths was impressive in goal for the home side... something he'll have enjoyed, seeing as he was originally from Billingham.

A great win and a demon exorcised. Sadly I didn't get the full game experience as slight illness confined me to the bar after I paid for my ticket. Still, at least it meant Kim and Tracey got some peace and quiet. Shaggy - you're right it is good to see the Backup beating his old team, but as far as I know he's only lost to them once, and that was earlier this season. He's in very good form though, long may that continue. Lacho's winner was well-taken but it only just makes up for the 2+10 he took - not the first stupid penalty he's taken and not his first misconduct either. A player as talented as him needs to be on the ice, not in the penalty box - you win games by scoring goals, not by sitting out chunks of the game and chucking sweets at your opponents. Did the Lions have a new signing last night?

He's in very good form though, long may that continue. As far as I am aware (and I stand to be corrected by those closer to the team than myself) Rich Griffiths is not the "backup" netminder for the Lions... he and Alan Levers share the duties roughly equally.

As far as I am aware, Rich Griffiths is the Backup in the sense that even though most of his stats last season were better than Alan Levers' comparative numbers (excluding shutout column, of course), I used to call him the Backup to his face. I called him the Backup goalie, and he called me the Backup manager, though by the end of the season, our performances were both on a par with the "starting" goalie/manager (i.e. Alan in his case, John in mine).

The Players and Management of the Nottingham Lions would like to wish all Lions supporters (and Cage readers) a Merry Christmas.
We're in Coventry on Sunday 28th December if anyone fancies combining Christmas shopping with some hockey!

Final score from Coventry was 5-5. Lions were 4-2 down with 10 minutes left.
I'm sure that Carolle or some of the others who were there will have more details when they get back to Nottingham later.

This does look a little disappointing, given the lead we had, until you consider the belated Christmas present we received from our friends in the further North. Last night's game between Billingham and Kingston finished Bombers 3-4 Jets. Suddenly, Lacho's last minute goal against the Bomb Squad - and an away point from a team pushing for the playoffs - mean we haven't done too badly over Christmas.

This does look a little disappointing, given the lead we had If you're referring to the score, we were never in the lead - we clawed it back to 4-4, before going 5-4 down and tying with less than 2 mins to go.

yeah sorry misread it, in which case, it sounds like a great escape - how appropriate given that the film is on at some point over the festive period.

NEWCASTLE AWAY SATURDAY 10th JANUARY
If there's anyone who is interested in coming away with the Lions on Saturday 10th, then can they please PM me by Thursday 8th. We've had a couple of people more than usual express interest and we need to ensure that there's enough space for all that might want to come.
If the coach is full and you turn up without letting me know, then there is a very good chance that you will not be able to get on!

Wow - talk about robbery. With this, the Coventry come back, and the Billingham winner, we certainly know how to do fashionably late Absolutely fantastic stuff to beat the Scims in Sheffield. Moreover it keeps the pressure on Sheffield and Whitley, who are both 8 points behind with 5 games in hand. We need to maintain our momentum with four points next weekend (doable, but I'm not underestimating either side, especially as Kingston have just signed someone from the EPL Scimitars), and ideally hope both the Scims and the Warriors lose a game and then draw with each on 31.1.09. The excitement is palpable.

Just had word of the final score up in Newcastle...
Newcastle ENL Vipers 1 - 9 Nottingham Lions
Sounds like it got a bit frisky near the end, with Lions captain Chris Colegate getting a 2+2 Roughing penaltyafter the Vipers apparently ran our netminder, Rich Griffiths.

A bit late this one, I've been sorting stuff out for our game tomorrow.
Lions won 1-9.
Period scores: 1-2, 0-3, 0-4. PiM was 77-8. 61 minutes were handed out in the final period, a Match for Ross Hanlon for Fighting, misconducts also for Marcus Hinkley and Darren Shanks. Goalie Chris Snaith had already got a 10 in the first period.
Couple of talking points in the game: 1st Period in the opening minutes, Lions shoot the puck in and it bounces off the goalies' head - both teams continue to play it expecting a whistle that doesn't arrive. Lions score and then the Vipers start protesting, and it's this that earns Snaith his 10. I don't know why play wasn't stopped, and I would have thought it should have done but it didn't!
Final period, just over 5 mins remaining, Callum Pattinson comes out of the bin and skates straight towards Lions' goalie Rich Griffiths. There was no-one else about as play was in the neutral zone. It was a stupid and reckless thing to do. Lions only had one goalie as Alan Levers was unavailable, and it could have potentially been a dangerous situation. Pattinson got 2+2+2, and Chris Colegate got 2+2 for the ensuing punchup behind the net!
Still, Lions got out of what could have been a tricky game, bring on the Jets tomorrow, who by all accounts beat Coventy in Hull 7-2 today.

Another win for the Lions tonight, although not without the odd misstep or two... The final score was 4-2 to the Lions, but the score doesn't really tell much of the story. Kingston Jets have in the past been... if not a pushover, then one of those teams that you 'expect' to beat. And that's exactly how it looked like the Lions were thinking in the first period... the effort just didn't seem to be there. It got punished - Kingston went 1-0 up early on, and actually netted a second that ref Blaine Evans washed out for having a man in the crease. Kingston came out hard and fast... playing in-your-face hockey... maybe not as skilled as the Lions, but a damn sight closer than in previous seasons... and it took the hosts by surprise. We got an equaliser (Sam Bullas, IIRC) but it was a close-run thing. Kingston dominated (and out-shot) in the first. I don't know what was said/shouted/screamed in the Lions dressing room in the first break, but it seemed to work. A different Lions team came out on the ice - one with a bit of 'oomph' behind them. And fairly quickly on it was 2-1 to the hosts. The Kingston netminder (and deserved MoM) made a series of stops on some lovely chances for the Lions... we were piling on the pressure, but he kept Kingston in it... otherwise it would have been a cricket score. The scoring went 3-1, 3-2 and then 4-2... and then Kingston started to show a bit of the old Jets that we've come to know and... well, know! ;D A bit of the nasty, a lot of the verbals... and you don't yap at Blaine Evans, you just don't - he'll slap his hips every time. Kingston's dirty #8 had a 10min earlier on (nasty piece of work!) but with less than a minute to go, and Kingston on the PP pulling their goalie for a 6-on-4, a disputed offside call lead to words, more words, and naughty words! Kingston's #9 went for an early shower... I'm surprised their coach didn't get his marching orders as well, but in the dying seconds of the game, Evans probably couldn't be bothered with all of the paperwork (hard to blame him). The visitors piled on some serious pressure, all credit to them on that score - but the superior skills of the Lions held out. 4-2 final score, and 2 more valuable points in the quest to retain the league title. Lions MoM was new lad #14 Thomas Soar. Watch out for him... he's only just turned 16 apparently, but is sized (and plays) like he's a couple of years older. Got a goal up in Newcastle yesterday, played his socks off today. Definitely one to watch for the future. Special mention to Mark Corfield as well, who also impressed (and got a goal in each of this weekend's games).

I can't add much to Shaggy's post, he summed it up perfectly.
With the Lions missing Lacho, Neil & Graham who were away with the U-20's in Spain the Lions were nervous. Kingston are a tough team to play against, they don't stop skating! Add to the fact that they actually have 2 decent goalies you can see why it's hard to play them. However with Joe Wightman returning to the lineup, and also the addition of a couple of Under 18's in Michael Steventon, Joe Nicholls and Thomas Soar, things once again are looking up!
However, with Whitley beating Blackburn 9-0, and Coventry losing to Sheffield 8-1 means that the main rivals to us retaining our title are still on track.

Couldn't make either game due to family commitments but an excellent weekend - four points against two very physical teams. Also, if the season started in January, then the past few seasons Kingston would have probably made the playoffs such is their second half form. The Newcastle team really did themselves proud didn't they? Losing by a long way, they notice the opposition has but one goalie so they decide to run him. The coach who called that play should be ashamed of themselves - good luck in division 2. Still 8 points ahead with 5 games in hand over Whitley and Sheffield. For us it's catch us if you can, but for the Scims and Warriors it's a game of chicken - who can hold their nerve the best before the teams meet on January 31st. All shaping up nicely

Blackburn lost to a short-benched Sheffield 2-1.

A scientific fact. Well done to the whole Lions team on a fantastic result, and by all accounts (well, one account) putting on a very entertaining game. By winning three out of four against Billingham, barring calamities elsewhere that should be good enough to give the Lions a top three finish. Ideally from now we could beat Sheffield, then Sheffield could beat Whitley the following Saturday, then if Sheffield slip up elsewhere you could have a three-way tie at the top. Incidentally the Warriors won in Coventry last night. The standings are now so interesting, if they were a snooker player, they would be Steve "Interesting" Davis. Oh wait ...

well well once agian mr raven posts a comment on what he knows nothing about "Rick-ay! Incidentally, by going after Box and Scott Ward in the same game, Jonny Bell has now become the greatest Lions player of all time. A scientific fact."
you so called greatest player of all time could have cause a permanent injury to ricky box whilst kneeing him ricky was agianst the boards at the time scott ward done what any other player would have done and stook up for his team mate .. later in the game you so called best player of all time bottled it agianst the same ricky box.so called greatest player didnt have the bottle to go toe to toe with tomo and once agian bottled it . so i think in future you should stick to commenting on games that you were at .
well played lions and i belive a draw would have been a fair result les

Lions vs. Sheffield Sunday 25/01/09
Nottingham Lions once again are pleased to announce that anyone with a ticket for Sunday's Panthers vs. Blaze game, or a Panthers Season Ticket will have a pound off admission for the Lions game on Sunday evening.
It's a must-win game for the Lions! With both Sheffield and Whitley having games in hand over the Lions, we need to win as many of our last games as we can to stand a chance of defending our title. The first two games against Sheffield went their way with 4-1 victories - both at Ice Sheffield and at the NIC. However when the Lions played in Sheffield earlier this month Chris Colegate scored the game-winner with just 7 seconds remaining!
If you're down at the NIC watching the Panthers, then please stay on if you can to watch the Lions...
