NIHL 1 Games this weekend
Sat 02/03 Blackburn Hawks v Widnes Wild
Sun 03/03 Billingham Stars v Deeside Dragons Whitley Warriors v Solihull Barons Widnes Wild v Blackburn Hawks Nottingham Lions v Hull Jets (Face Off: 7,20pm)
The Lions have had in their two past meetings with Hull games that went to overtime and on both occasions the Jets took the points. Up at Hull our guys pushed the Jets all the way but missed out in a 5-4 O/T thriller. Back in Nottingham the game ended up in a 3-4 O/T win once again for the Jets. Hull Jets are in their first season in NIHL 1 and they have achieved remarkable results, particularly at home where they have toppled some of the bigger clubs whilst on the road results have been not so good particularly in the return games when those same opponents met them on their home ice. This will be a tough game and that's for certain and the Lions will have to work very hard to get positive result.

The Billingham Stars have had a run of poor results over recent weeks particularly last weekend when they missed out on their first silverware for years and tonight losing at home to Deeside Dragons maybe may have put a dent in their hopes regarding league honours, but they fortunately have a present four point cushion that with an improvement in form should see them through, we shall see? The Lions rather let themselves down tonight in a game where a favourable result for them was definitely on the cards but their performance reached nowhere near the standard required to take the points. Tonight was probably their best opportunity to put distance between them and the Scimitars and within striking distance of Widnes Wild one place above the Lions and presently icing a team that is struggling to gain any sort of positive result themselves. Period scores: 1-1/1-1/0-1 Scorers: Toby Fisher, and Luke Thomas SOG: 23-36 MOM: Isaac Ballinger (netminder)

NIHL 1 Weekend games
Sat 09/03 Deeside Dragons v Blackburn Hawks Sheffield Scimitars v Billingham Stars Hull Jets v Nottingham Lions (F/O 5.30pm)
Sun 10/03 Billingham Stars v Hull Jets Blackburn Hawks v Sheffield Scimitars Deeside Dragons v Whitley Warriors Solihull Barons v Nottingham Lions (Face Off: 5.30pm)
The Lions are on the road for both games this weekend with a trip to Hull and then the journey down to the Hobs Moat rink to meet the Barons. Hopefully we might see the Lions come back from last Sunday's disappointing effort against the Jets and make more of a game of it this time around. Although all three of the games have been lost by the odd goal last Sunday the Lions really had the opportunity to pick up two points but failed to apply the necessary pressure and let the Jets off the hook. The Jets do have an impressive home record having beaten all of the top teams in the league so this will be a bit of an ask of the Lions but our guys are capable of getting a win at Hull. Over the past few seasons the Barons have had the upper hand but this season the Lions did pick up a point losing to Solihull in overtime. That result was in Nottingham but down at the Hobs Moat our guys have really struggled to get a result, so a tough call for the Lions to gain points in this one. Following on from this weekend the season draws nearer to it's end with only a couple of games left for the Lions in the regular season.

Sat 09/03 Deeside Dragons 6 Blackburn Hawks 1 Sheffield Scimitars 6 Billingham Stars 9 Hull Jets 6 Nottingham Lions 5
It looks as though the Scimitars really gave the Stars a game up at Sheffield as the Stars have proved to be somewhat of a shadow of the dominant team that we have seen over this season, but they are still at the top and are still definitely in poll position to take the league title. Yet another sickener for the Lions as they went to Hull hoping to get something from this game but unfortunately as has occurred in all four of the games this season the Jets managed to gain that extra goal to seal the points. At home the Jets are a force to be reckoned with so pushing that team that close was an achievement but not quite enough to secure the points for the Lions. No details of stats from the game as yet. Tonight the Lions head to Solihull to play the Barons so another tough prospect for our guys but you just never know in some of these games there is always that glimmer of hope but whatever the youngsters will always gain something from these games to aid their hockey development.

Hull Jets v Nottingham Lions Stats: Sat 09/03
Period Scores: 3-0/1-0/2-5 Scorers: James Mather 2+1, Tristan Grimshaw 1+1, Kieran Gibbs 1+0, Tyler Somerton 1+0, Zak Yokoyama 0+2, Toby Fisher 0+1, Nick Martin 0+1 SOG: 32-36 MOM: Nick Martin
The Lions took a while to really get into this game and were outshot in the first period and conceded three goals. In the second period and into the the third the Lions reduced the shots against whilst increasing their own tally of shots on the Jets goal and this showed particularly in the third period where the Lions managed to score five goals. The game was tied 5-5 at 53.08 minutes but as in their three previous meetings the Jets took the points with a late goal. Over the four games this season all have been won by the one goal with the only problem for the Lions being that all four games have gone to the Jets.

Managed to speak with the Lions coach late this evening to ask about the game tonight. He felt that the youngsters performed quite well although his team met with a great deal of intimidation which did take it's toll. As the coach stated many of the Lions are still on the learning curve and play at under 18 level but given time they will learn to handle the type of play experienced this evening. The team worked hard and it was noted that the scoring from the Barons was from their most experienced players with captain Niklas Ottosson scoring and assisting on six of the goals tonight. It is generally noted that there are very few oustanding young players coming through at a number of clubs many relying on recruiting more experienced players and that does not aid player development which will in time have it's effect on future player availability. A shortage of players innevitably leads to inflated wage demands and we know where that has a tendency to lead given the demise of a number of clubs over the years. Period Scores: 3-0/2-0/4-1 Scorers: Nick Martin 1+0, Tristan Grimshaw 0+1, Toby Fisher 0+1 SOG: 47 -37 MOM: Nick Martin Great result for Hull Jets taking out top of the league Billingham Stars on their home ice, ouch!!

NIHL 1 Games this weekend
Sat 16/03 Hull Jets v Billingham Stars Sheffield Scimitars v Blackburn Hawks
Sun 17/03 Billingham Stars v Solihull Barons Whitley Warriors v Hull Jets Widnes Wild v Deeside Dragons Blackburn Hawks v Nottingham Lions
On the road once again this time to our old friends up in Blackburn. The Hawks are just two points behind second place Solihull Barons with a game in hand and a better goal difference. Over the season the Hawks have a 2-1 lead with one more to play in Solihull a week on Sunday. The Hawks also defeated the Barons in the semi final of the cup before then beating Billingham Stars in the final. The Lions travel for their last attempt to gain something from the previous three defeats to the Hawks. Having lost up at Blackburn 8-4 in their first encounter the Lions did push the Hawks all the way here in Nottingham narrowly missing out 2-3 and then 3-4, so just one more crack at the Hawks before the season end. Face off 6.00pm. Following the very physical encounter down at Solihull last Sunday Kieran Gibbs took a nasty hit resulting in him requiring some facial reconstructive surgery during this week, we all wish him a speedy recovery.

The Lions travelled to third placed Blackburn with a short bench and faced a full Hawks team that had scored nine goals the night before at Sheffield so our guys were well and truly up against it and that was for sure. The Lions did put up a good show battling hard against a pretty unforgiving opponents and, it has to be said, kept as tight a lid on the game as possible under the circumstances. Just one more game in the regular season to go and that is against Whitley Warriors here in Nottingham on Saturday 24/03 at 1.30pm. I believe this game will be on the arena ice. Period scores: 3-1/3-0/1-0 Scorer: Luke Birchnall MOM: James Mather

NIHL 1 Games this weekend
Sat 23/03 Nottingham Lions v Whitley Warriors (Arena Ice: Face Off 1.20pm)
Sun 24/03 Billingham Stars v Whitley Warriors Deeside Dragons v Widnes Wild Sheffield Scimitars v Hull Jets Solihull Barons v Blackburn Hawks
This is the final weekend of the regular league schedule with just the play offs to finish the 23/24 season in NIHL 1. The Lions are up against the Whitley Warriors who have taken the points in their last three meetings with the Warriors scoring 14 goals in these games to the Lions 6. The best result although a loss saw the Warriors battle to a 0-2 result over the home side on their previous visit to Nottingham. Somewhat unusual for the Warriors to find themselves well below form as they sit in 6th place in the league having, for most of the recent seasons, been in the top three but they are still a force to be reckoned with and this game should be certainly worth watching. An early face off on the arena ice and an ice hockey game at a very reasonable price so come along and bring the children for a family ice hockey treat.

Nottingham Lions 3 Whitley Warriors 6 Luke Thomas Captain Well today’s game is the end of an era as the Lions we’re headed up by Luke Thomas for the last league game of his long ice hockey career. Luke has proved to be one of the most loyal members of team since joining the Lions from Solihull and it was the honour given to his parents to drop the ceremonial puck in his honour. Luke has proved to be a great servant of the club and an excellent captain and role model to the many junior players that moved up through the ranks over many years. Luke is to continue his coaching with the Nottingham club and guiding his young son as he develops his undoubted skills as a player through the next few years. Many thanks Luke for your contribution to the Lions you will be long remembered.
The Lions went into today’s game missing three vital players, Kieran Gibbs recovering from facial surgery, Zak Yokoyama serving a ban, and Tristan Grimshaw also serving a ban, whilst the Warriors welcomed back three players vital to their success. Icing both imports gave the Warriors a massive advantage and this certaily showed in the first period as the Warriors took the period 0-3. The Lions battled on and certainly rattled the Warriors as the home side finally took a period, I believe, the first against the Warriors this season 3-2. Into the third with a 3-5 deficit and the Lions still made the Warriors work hard for the points but the period went to the visitors 0-1 and a final score of 3-6 to the Whitley Warriors. The Lions did draft in more youngsters to cover the gaps in the squad and they performed well with Max McKewan, hope his name is spelt correctly, a new player to me and brought in for this game scored his debut goal, so a memorable day for him. The Lions now have to wait for the outcome of tomorrows meeting at Sheffield between the Scimitars and the Hull Jets as this result decides the final play off place. Should Sheffield Scimitars lose the Lions go through to the end of season play offs against the top club and league winners the Billingham Stars. Period scores: 0-3/3-2/0-1 Scorers:Max McKewan, Toby Fisher, Nick Martin MOM: Luke Thomas received the award in order to decide who he felt was the man of the match today. He decided it was to be shared between newcomer Max McKewan and netminder Isaac Ballinger. Can’t argue with that.

Play Off: Quarter Finals Weekend
Sat 30/03 Widnes Wild v Solihull Barons Deeside Dragons v Whitley Warriors Hull Jets v Blackburn Hawks Nottingham Lions v Billingham Stars (Arena Ice at 1.20pm)
Sun 31/03 Solihull Barons v Widnes Wild Whitley Warriors v Deeside Dragons Blackburn Hawks v Hull Jets Billingham Stars v Nottingham Lions (Face Off 4.30pm)
The Lions are up against the 23/24 NIHL 1 league champions who are desperate to add the double following their surprise defeat earlier in the season in the NIHL1 Cup against the Blackburn Hawks. Having missed out on the possible treble the Lions will have it all to do to get any joy in this game. looking at the potential absence list in the Lions squad for this weekend particularly having lost the likes of Kieran Gibbs through injury and Zak Yokoyama who is serving a ban plus player holiday commitments life might prove tougher than expected. It is certainly apparent that players are going to be drafted in to cover the shortfall which does make life that bit more difficult but gives the coaching team a look at some of the players waiting in the wings for their chance to rise higher in the pecking order for places on the team for the 24/25 season. To be brutally honest with a full squad the Lions would have certainly given the Stars a good workout. Given the strength of their squad Billingham Stars should move on to the semi finals and my I hope for this game is that the youngsters that come in enjoy the game on the arena ice and give the Stars a good run for their money. Good luck guys. Face Off 1.20 pm.

Play Off: Quarter Finals 1st Leg
Widnes Wild 2 Solihull Barons 5 Deeside Dragons 4 Whitley Warriors 6 Hull Jets 3 Blackburn Hawks 3 Nottingham Lions 0 Billingham Stars 5
The Lions were always up against it due to the number of players unavailable but they did give the league champions as good a game as possible but weren’t able to breakthrough the Stars defence. The Nottingham team did do a great deal better than even I anticipated and it was unfortunate that the guys did not tie the third period as the Lions fought well but conceded the one goal close to the final hooter. Period scores: 0-2/0-2/0-1 MOM: 16yr old Sam Miller in only his third game for the Lions. The Lions are on the road tomorrow for the second leg game up at Billingham with the face off set for 4.30pm.
Hull Jets kept up their remarkable introductory season in NIHL 1 as they tied their home game against the Blackburn Hawks. It will be a very interesting game up at Blackburn tomorrow as the Hawks after cup success earlier in the season are along with Billingham looking for another trophy for the cupboard.

NIHL 1 Play O.ff: QuarterFinals 2nd Leg
Solihull Barons 7 Widnes Wild 4 Whitley Warriors 7 Deeside Dragons 5 Blackburn Hawks 5 Hull Jets 1 Billingham Stars 5 Nottingham Lions 1
The Lions travelled to Billingham with a twelve Man squad due to injuries, bans, and other absences therefore the odds were stacked against them but although short benched they were determined to make a game of it and they certainly achieved that goal. To add to their woes having made the long journey there were problems with the ice and the game faced off a hour and a half later than scheduled. With only ten out skaters the Lions could not play open flowing hockey so employed a plan to slow down the game and frustrate the opponents and the result they achieved employing these tactics certainly paid off as the Lions actually won a period. The team worked their proverbial socks off for the full sixty minutes but tired in the third period, they then had to face the later than expected long journey home. Period scores: 2-0/0-1/3-0 Goal scorer: Tyler Somerton MOM: Luca Sheldon for keeping out 49 of the 54 shots on his net That’s it folks the end of the 23/24 season and preparations commence for 24/25 and as usual there will be slots to be filled as players move on and the conveyor belt that is the Nottingham Junior Section provides the next generation of hockey players.
