Games this weekend: NIHL 1 Conference 07.03.20 Blackburn hawks v Solihull Barons Solway Sharks v Whitley Warriors
08.03.20 Whitley Warriors v Blackburn Hawks Billingham Stars v Sutton Sting Solihull Barons v Nottingham Lions
The Lions take to the road for one last time this season, and one they must really be looking forward to, to the Hobs Moat to meet the Solihull Barons. Now it would be true to say that there is little love between these two and as it is the Lions last visit of the season there could be more than a luke warm welcome envisaged. Hopefully the game will win out and some niggling grudges set to one side and that a fast moving competitive game occurs with few incidents. Just one more run out, at home, for the Lions on Sunday 15th March to round off this season of transition.

Weekend Results: NIHL 1 Conference 07.03.20 Blackburn Hawks 3 Solihull Barons 12 Solway Sharks 13 Whitley Warriors 3
Shock result for the Warriors who concede 10 goals in the third period of their game against the Sharks. over 170 mins of penalties handed out in this highly charged game.
08.03.20 Whitley Warriors 5 Blackburn Hawks 2 Billingham Stars 6 Sutton Sting 4 Solihull Barons 9 Nottingham Lions 0
The Lions travelled with only 12 out skaters and young Luca Sheldon once again in the firing line. Considering some of the results against the Barons this season this is a reasonable result given that the team knocked in 12 goals on the road last night against the Blackburn Hawks. Period Scores:1-0/3-0/5-0. The penalty tally was very low probably due to the thought that with the short bench against the home team there was little to gain by being overly physical. The Lions managed 25 shots on the home net but unfortunately there was nothing on the scoreboard to show for their effort.

NEWS: EIHA/SIH Boards make joint statement on state of play March 13, 2020 The Boards of the English Ice Hockey Association and Scottish Ice Hockey have been in discussions today around the ever-changing situation regarding COVID-19, coronavirus. As both Boards mentioned in statements earlier today, following the latest UK government and health agency advice they can confirm that a full domestic fixture list will take place in both associations this coming weekend. Anyone who is in one of the high-risk groups should not attend matches this weekend. Anyone showing any symptoms should not attend matches this weekend and consider seven day isolation per the government advice given on Thursday. Everyone involved in the games – players, officials, staff, spectators – should follow the advice about hand hygiene, ‘catch it bin it kill it’, reducing unneccessary contact with others. You can find more advice from the NHS here: www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/The Boards are mindful of the developments around the sporting world and will reconvene early in the week to discuss the way forward for the remainder of regular season and beyond. As always should the situation change then updates will be given via association websites and social media. Share This Story, Choose Your Platform! FacebookTwitterLinkedInGoogle+PinterestEmail

This final game of the season for the Lions saw them in with a real chance as they went into the final period with a 2-3 scoreline. In the final 20 mins the officials appeared to become penalty happy unfortunately favouring the Sting with even a match being handed out to Bailey Challans with just 38 seconds left in the game. This penalty looks to keep Bailey sidelined for important games for the Nottingham u18s and u20s as they seek to complete a winning season for the Junior Club. For much of the game tonight Sutton struggled to get the better of the Lions but the openings provided in that 3rd period made the score appear to be a bit of a walk over for the victor. The two goals for the Lions were scored on the power play with the line composed of three 16 yr old and two 17 yr old players with both goals being beautifully executed by this teenage line. The second goal gave the Lions a brief lead in the game. Period Scores: 0-1/2-2/0-4. Scorers: Toby Fisher 1+1,Ellis Ricci 1+0, Bailey Challans 0+1. A first goal at senior level for Ellis Ricci. A season of major transition for the Lions as a new bunch of junior players were drafted in to replace a mass of senior players who were moving on or retiring. No points on the board but the guys did begin to adjust to the pressure being placed on them by the quality and experience that they faced over the season. A daunting experience moving from junior hockey to senior hockey but they have shown great maturity as the season developed and these youngsters showed that the opposition did not faze them and dug in deep to always make a game of it week in and week out. I still believe NIHL 1 is where they should stay because the boys have shown they will grow into the job over the season I feel there are going to be some form of restructure during the off season as the cup competition saw a couple of Scottish clubs, Dundee and Murrayfield, included with the Murrayfield Racers winning the Northern Group Cup. These two Scottish clubs may now wish to link up with the NIHL 1 and should that be the case some of the present NIHL 1 clubs might balk at the added costs and look to further split the present conference structure. The Lions need to hang on to all of their their young players and add, if at all possible, a couple more senior players to the squad. I believe that if the kids stay around that in a couple seasons there will be a Lions team pushing for honours and a play off place, at least.

A bit of good news as the NIHL National League top defenceman for the shortened 2019/20 season award has been presented to ex Nottingham player Tom Norton. His season tally for goals and assists made him the highest scoring D man with 20 goals and 35 assists. Having proved a firm fans favourite he has re-signed for the Phantoms for the up and coming season, whenever that gets off the ground. Having met Tom on a number of occasions he remains, for me and a number of others, a lost asset and one of the most personable guys on the hockey scene. Well done, and well deserved.

RIP Gavin Tait
Information was received today that an old friend of the Nottingham Junior Ice Hockey Club, and the father of Ashley, Warren and Joanne died in the early hours of this morning.
A number of us will remember Gavin from the early days of the 1980s when along with Tony Macdonald they managed and coached the Nottingham Tigers under 13s. In that team and from that era came the nucleus of the ‘Brit Pack’ here in Nottingham leading invariably to play for the Nottingham Trojans and Panthers.
It would be true to say that he was a dominant character and very driven to produce along with Tony first and foremost a unified, and disciplined team that would challenge for honours.
This whole team approach led to the Tigers winning a major tournament in Kirkcaldy a feat that had not previously been achieved by an English club. This result, especially beating Kirkcaldy Chiefs, led to the Scottish club and their GB coach making significant changes to their training and pre match preparation.
It was an even harder pill for the guys north of the border to swallow as two English clubs met in the final with the Nottingham Tigers beating the Streatham Braves in a memorable game, winning on penalty shots.
The Tigers team did not win the league that year but within their ranks, as stated previously, was the nucleus of a formidable junior team that would move on to the u16s Cougars and would become the English and British Champions 1989/90 season.
Players that came through the ranks include Parker, Perkins, Budd, Trickett, Twaite, Tait, Bradbury, Roberts, Wright, Thompson, and many others including Matt Bradbury's line man on defence and the greatly missed, Gary Rippingale who suddenly passed away aged 18 years old. . The Tigers travelled abroad for some memorable trips particularly the annual Christmas trip to the Canadian Air Force base in Baden, Germany. This international tournament was always great fun as well as a chance to try the Tigers team out against some exceptionally stiff opposition.
The social side of these trips abroad were pretty memorable for all sorts of reasons with B52s consumed in large quantities with our Canadian hosts. Gavin was always there at the centre of proceedings enjoying the camaraderie with all of the other international ice hockey buffs. It cannot be understated the significant impact Gavin had on the development of junior ice hockey here in Nottingham and the strength of his personality that helped motivate those with whom he had contact within the club and across the country.
Happy memories of a man we and many of the ice hockey fraternity will certainly never forget and that is for certain.
Our sincere condolences to the Tait family at this very sad time.

Matt Bradbury (Lions Head Coach) spoke with me regarding an interest that has been shown by an 18yr old Czech player via an agent in joining the Nottingham Lions for next season. He will require a place to live whilst here and The Lions are seeking someone prepared to offer him accommodation in Nottingham. If there is someone out their willing to accommodate the player please make contact via the Lions email at nottinghamlions@hotmail.co.uk. The charge for the accommodation is negotiable with the club.

Hi kiev There's a lot of uncertainty at the moment but we are aware of yet another restructuring. I am aware of changes but there is no actual decisions as yet, but lots of unsubstantiated rumours. I tend to close off until the decisions come from on high and then wait for the collective headscratching to end to see what we actually have on offer. I am somewhat surprised at the Hawks decision but some cost cutting must have led them to choose that course of action. With Altrincham and Widnes nearby in Div 2 that might have also proved a bit of a bonus moneywise and no Scottish trips as well. The Hawks are not the power they once were and have struggled to make their mark in NIHL 1 for sometime and that might have had some bearing on the decision to drop a division. Apologies for not getting back to you sooner, life got in the way and little news to follow up and comment on was also a factor.

Just thought it pertinent information to share for the Lions thread. Personally it seems a tad premature this announcement, because I can imagine every team wants to reduce costs and given the Hawk's announcement only leaves 6 teams in NIHL 1 North, it's not feasible for several teams to drop down without effectively losing a division. Like you say, there will have to be a bigger change to work out league structure (yet again!!!). I do find it bizarre what on the surface is a bigger and better rink than nearby Manchester's can only support a 4th tier hockey team. Seems that it should be much more at home in the NIHL National at the least.

Hi kiev I certainly agree that the information is pertinent and I am always, as are the Lions, aware that the more up to date info the better. I must admit to being somewhat switched off at the moment, too much isolation and attempting to dodge he odd virus. I also agree that given the facilities at the Blackburn rink for ice hockey at a higher level are there but, for whatever reason, might not have been sold that well otherwise the situation could/should have been very different. Planet Ice might have a few ideas up their collective sleeve, they usually do, so we will have to wait and see I suppose.

Is it time to wake up yet? This hibernation/isolation don't half grind away at me somewhat. I am of an age where I am nearer the exit than entrance to life and I crave some excitement in my latter days. I have been following the posts on the cage particularly relating to the virus and it's effects hockeywise whilst also noting that changes appear to be occurring at the NIC itself. My interest therefore my post revival has taken off, probably temporarily, when reading of the lack of British players at EIHL level. Now I go back a few years to my actual passion for this sport that was fired up in the old barn and the passion of the fans at that time that carried me through thick and mostly thin years of following the Panthers. At that time there were a number of decent Brit players around with limited number of imports. I am not saying that the quality of the hockey was that brilliant but it was a great night out surrounded by noisy and knowledgeable fans, and I do mean fans. I was also interested in the development so watched the Trojans and a number of junior games plus international junior tournaments. Good years by my reckoning. I followed the senior game for a number of years but as the Brit development fell away my interest waned also. I did go to the NIC to watch the Panthers but soon fell away as I felt the passion that I had felt over the years diminish almost with each game I attended. In the end my interest and passion for that level of ice hockey died, hence that is why I maintain my interest in what some might term the 'crap' end of hockey in the UK as I find the passion amongst the unpaid youngsters a revelation. Had to wake from my slumbers as some recent posts I found, to me anyway, difficult to accept.

I had somewhat of a rude awakening today as I noted through the media that Matt Bradbury (Lions Head Coach) had today set out on a massive career change, I certainly did not see that one coming. Matt has left his post as Sports Development Officer at the NIC after 18 yrs to set up Matt Bradbury Sports. In my previous posting I mentioned that 'changes appear to be occurring at the NIC' and asked Matt if those changes affected him. He only said that he left with a sad heart after 18 yrs but felt that the decisions made were probably necessary given the present circumstances. Having decided to go he set about creating a new start and a new business providing sports coaching using hockey as the base but also developing in other sporting areas. I hadn't realised the depth of sports experience that Matt had accrued over the years thinking only that having started as a junior ice hockey player in Nottingham with eventual progression to senior hockey and then coaching that that was the sum total but I was wrong. It is amazing that I never even realised that he is one of a small number of Level 3 ice hockey coaches (the highest level in UK) as well as having coached swimming and for the past four years he has also been the coach of a junior cricket team and that they have been the champions of their league for the past three years. He says that he remains the Lions Head Coach and will still head up the Lions Academy for the up and coming junior players. When asked about possible future links with the NIC he stated that it is his intention to continue to promote ice skating and ice sports and that he will always be available to help out where he can as he still has a great affinity with the NIC and the people that he worked with over the past 18yrs. The main thrust of his sports business will be with the schools initially as the majority of his working life has been directed towards encouraging young people to be more physically active. It really amazes me of the amount that I did not know about Matt Bradbury having had, on occasions, close contact with the Lions Head Coach. I didn't even mention that he was/is the Head Coach of the GB Universities Ice Hockey Team having taken them to, I think, five World Student Winter Games (Univesiade) My age is certainly catching up with me. In Matt I believe we have one of the most experienced and dedicated coaches and I personally wish him well with his new project, whilst awaiting a new season of Lions hockey, if it ever gets airborne. If you are interested in contacting Matt his website is: www.mattbradburysports.com with the site going live today.

Having been somewhat intrigued by recent developments at the NIC and my brief catch up with Matt I did contact him to find out if his website going live met with a good response. I am not a twitterite, or a facebook officianado therefore I am more than likely to be far removed from the info loop unless someone contacts me on the blower. Anyway it appears that the response has proved positive but of course that eventually has to lead to an income. He released the website to just get it out there and now awaits some results from the initial interest. It is going to be a hard slog but as he said when at the NIC he was used to grafting to pull in the business and felt that over the years he had achieved a number of goals and hoped to repeat that success with his new venture whilst also promoting ice sports due to his long and productive association with the NIC. Due to there being no facility available for the junior club teams Matt has commenced an off ice training programme for the youngsters, supported by other team coaches, to ensure the players are able to maintain fitness levels and to maintain team cohesion. It is initiatives like this that clubs should be thinking about and developed within a controlled and safe environment to ensure some form of physical activity is available for teams. It is my intention to periodically catch up with Matt to discuss progress on and off the ice. Certainly more off ice than on at the moment unfortunately.

Two weeks on since I last had chance to catch up with Matt Bradbury having been given the heads up that he was to be interviewed on BBC Radio Nottingham on Saturday 22/08. Had a listen to a lengthy slot as Matt was interviewed for around twenty minutes in total. Most of the interview related to his playing days his forced retirement through injury at 19yrs old but then gradually moved through coaching and to the present day. Some interesting stuff came out about his career and the influence of various coaches as a player and then developing his own style of coaching particularly relating to junior players and their development. His work with schools I found particularly of interest but again I was not aware that over the years he had developed a schools programme that had introduced over 30,000 children to ice skating. I caught up with him briefly to find out what was happening on the hockey front and what he had been up to over the past couple of weeks. It appears that talks have been taking place regarding the new season but that he was not at liberty to share any information only that the situation remains fluid but that communication is occurring on a regular basis. Maybe in the next few weeks an answer might be forthcoming? In the meantime Matt continues with the off ice programme supported by coaches from the Junior Club and that has proved very popular. All involved in the programme appear to be enjoying the experience as the numbers have increased week on week. I believe we are about as up to date as possible so I will keep making contact in the hope that someday the ice hockey will return?

Finally awoke to find that there was little information regarding a future start to the season. Noted that Planet Ice are looking to a possible start in January 2021 but with a few games, I am assuming behind closed doors, in the meantime. Whether or not that might come off is anyone’s guess as with everything at the moment we live in uncertain times. I did catch up with Matt Bradbury for a brief chat and and in the hope that a nugget of good news on the hockey front might emerge. A bit of a forlorn hope realistically to my mind anyway but worth a shot? He is quite busy as he has been putting together a programme of sports events since setting up as Matt Bradbury Sports. He continues to be involved in off ice practice and conditioning with a number of junior players and assisted by other coaches from the junior section. This has proved a success with both the players and the coaches and is hopefully going to continue as the powers that be attempt to put together a season of sorts. The junior section are back on the ice and Matt has been down to check out the progress of some of the youngsters that might be included in the Lions training programme whenever that commences. Matt says that he has been quite busy but does not expect any major movement work wise until there is a more settled period with the schools. He has been putting together a day of cricket coaching alongside an established ECB coach and that looks to be interesting and he remains involved with coaching his junior cricket team. All in all he has remained busy attempting to establish his sports business since leaving his Sports Development post at the NIC and looks forward to continuing his links with ice hockey with the Nottingham Junior Ice Hockey Club whilst promoting the sport and ice skating in general. I will be catching up with him in the next few weeks when hopefully we might have a clearer idea of whether the 20/21 season is a goer or is destined for the bin?

Decided it was about time that I caught up with Matt Bradbury in order to glean a bit of info ref the Lions. He informed me that the Lions are now able to commence training but apart from that there was little else to say regarding the commemcement of actual games. He was at least pleased that the go ahead to train had now been agreed with all of the various obstacles removed but with certain practices regarding safety reinforced and to be rigorously adhered to. Well that was that one out of the way, for now. I asked him about the new venture with the off ice training and how his Matt Bradbury Sports project was progressing with schools via his Urban Hockey Programme. He said that there had been steady progress with all of the programmes that he has been steadily rolling out whilst being under no illusion that in the present climate it is always going to prove an uphill battle. The covid 19 situation has increased concerns regarding group working therefore there is a great deal of effort put in place to reduce the possibility of the transmition of the virus. He has worked on ensuring that he is up to date with legislation and prepared all that is required to ensure a safe working environment for the not only himself but most importantly for the classes he leads. He informed me that he has established important links with both CCM for equipment and most recently with Puckstop who have both confidently stepped up to the plate to provide valuable support for Matt's embryonic business. He feels that their input is backed by their confidence in this new venture, and that is particularly pleasing and most welcome. Matt stated that he had now served his notice period at the arena leaving on 16th October which now means he is now out there independently building a new future that he says is providing both excitement combined with an element of anxiety. To an old guy like me who spent his life in full time employment and on the payroll I find it a daunting prospect stepping out there to do it on your own so I wish him well. As an after thought he did tell me about a couple of projects during half term with two full day off ice events for junior players the first of these occurred on Monday 19th with 30 youngsters taking part. Paul Adey attended to do a q&a and masterclass with Mike Urquart doing the honours on Monday 26th. Matt along with Joe Ashdown ECB Cricket Coach will be carrying out a full day programme for young cricketers on 21st with Matt Carter Notts County Cricket Club (spin bowler) will be doing a q&a with the youngsters. I must admit I am truly amazed at what Matt is doing and the plans he has going forward with his new career. Might just get some ice hockey in one day. Can but hope.

The Nottingham Lions commenced on ice training on Tuesday night. They have Tuesday an Thursday allocated and no late nights, for now. Spoke briefly with Matt to see how the first night went and he said that it was a reasonable turn out player wise and that the first session went well. Asked him how business is with the latest restrictions particularly with the schools and the venues that he accesses normally for off ice training. Schools are naturally somewhat careful in buying in outside agencies to reduce viral spread so some impact was expected. The venues that he uses have also been closed so a bit of pressure at the moment but he remains philosophical regarding the present situation. Getting back on the ice with the team has provided a lift and a distraction from the troubles of the day.

It is looking like a complete reversal of fortunes here in Nottingham as under the previous Tier 3 the DCMS allowed the Lions to commence training and some games took place with teams from the National grouping within the NIHL set up. The latest Tier 3 totally shuts down the NIC therefore everything comes to a grinding halt. The concerns that I am picking up is that by degrees the Motorpoint, National Ice Centre is becoming way less viable as a business and possibly one that might become just unsubstainable and at risk. Rink managements are becoming extremely twitchy with the present situation including Nottingham. For the National Ice Centre to be put at risk is of great concern as it is not just a local ice rink when all said and done, it's in the title, and that is not to diminish the value of all other rinks throughout the country. It was given national status for a reason when the project was planned.

Teams surviving is one thing but rinks surviving is something far less likely especially the smaller rinks. To hear that about the NIC is very concerning.

As this year progressed the news regarding furlough and then the wholesale shedding of a number of very experienced people the writing was definitely on the wall regarding rlnks and some arenas including here in Nottingham.
The Nottingham Junior Section have been trying their hardest to keep the young players motivated with the coaches being quite innovative in this respect. Unfortunately all of the off ice training taking place at leisure centres and a local roller skating rink were also shut down therefore even that avenue was effectively blocked. Prior to the off ice facility being closed, this had proved very popular and kept all concerned in close touch, it was a real struggle to get players and coaches actively participating in training due to the rinks being mothballed and the off ice facility allowed the player coach contact to actively continue. Recently some online work has been adopted in an attempt to keep the players in touch with the club. Quite frankly it would be easier for the youngsters to just find a patch of grass and kick a football around and that is the worry as ice sports are effectively discontinued for the foreseeable future. I suppose the possibility of a vaccine holds some hope for the future and if timed right we might actually have ice hockey in place at all levels in time for the 21/22 season. That is my sincere hope. So over to you Mr Hancock?

Good news for the Nottingham Junior Club as they have been allowed to recommence training with sessions starting on Sunday. The Lions will also be allowed back on the ice to train. Lions training follows the youngsters tomorrow with an early evening start. Spoke briefly with Matt Bradbury who is very pleased with the outcome of the lobbying that occurred. Some common sense at last as really nothing had changed following the shutdown where training had been allowed.
