Forgot to mention the NIHL Cup
NIHL Cup (Midland Group) 05.01.20 Blackburn Hawks v Solihull Barons
This is the final Midland Group cup game prior to the semis that will see Sutton Sting v Blackburn Hawks home and away whereas, due to lack of ice time at the NIC, the Lions will travel to play Solihull Barons in a one off semi final game.

Weekend Results: NIHL Conference 04.01.20 Sutton Sting 7 Billingham Stars 2 Solway Sharks 4 Solihull Barons 3
NIHL Conference 05.01.20 Sutton Sting 4 Solway Sharks 2 Whitley Warriors 11 Nottingham Lions 1
NIHL Cup (Midland Group) Blackburn Hawks 6 Solihull barons 4
The Lions went to Whitley Warriors minus their No1 netminder and their back up due to other commitments. Stepping in for the game was Dean Andrew Bowater from NIHL 2 conference leaders the Hull Jets backed up by up and coming junior Luca Sheldon. As expected it was a tough old game with their senior players and imports making their dominance tell and allowing the Lions little in the way genuine attempts on goal. Period Scores: 3-1/3-0/5-0. The only scorer for the Lions was Cameron Pywell with the assist from Hamish Hall. After an extremely busy 53 mins netminder Bowater made way for Luca to see out the game. This game puts the Warriors only one point behind Solway Sharks, who presently head the conference, but with the Warriors having two games in hand. Spoke briefly with Matt Bradbury who stated that his lads grafted all night against the Warriors with David Longstaff, Warriors Head Coach, saying to Matt 'don't your guys ever give up' and the Lions received a great ovation from a good sized crowd as they left the ice.

Weekend Games: NIHL 1 Conference 11.01.20 Sutton Sting v Solihull Barons Solway Sharks v Billingham Stars
NIHL 1 Conference 12.01.20 Blackburn Hawks v Whitley Warriors Solihull Barons v Solway Sharks Billingham Stars v Nottingham Lions
The Lions take the long road trip back, once again, to the north east as they prepare to face the Billingham Stars. It would be true to say that the Stars have been hit with a real downward turn in fortunes of late therefore they will be looking to put an end to this rather grey period with a solid home win. On their last visit to Nottingham the Stars left with the points in a 2-7 game but will be looking to inflict greater damage in front of the home fans as they have certainly not been comforted by the performance of Stars of late. The Lions will have to dig deep to give the Stars a good run for their money on the night, and hopefully grab a few goals.

NIHL 1 Conference 12.01.20 Blackburn Hawks 3 whitley Warriors 6 Solihull Barons 9 Solway Sharks 6 Billingham Stars 10 Nottingham Lions 0
Billingham coming off a five game losing streak had something to prove to their doubting fans and the Lions were in the firing line in this game. Still missing both their No 1 and back up netminders the Lions called on Dean Andrew Bowater of the NIHL 2 Hull Jets and Matthew Lowden from the Nottingham Juniors. Period Scores: 5-0/1-0/4-0. After a torrid first period the Lions tightened up defensively in the second before tiring in the third period. Bowater was in the nets for a little over two periods before Lowden replacing him to gain experience and seeing out the game. It is interesting that when talking with players from NIHL 2 how they do not rate that conference hockey wise and feel that Nottingham made the right decision by continuing to play at the higher level. The Lions next NIHL 1 Conference game is the long trip north to play the Solway Sharks on Saturday 25th January. It gets tougher still as they are then due to play a home game against the high flying Solihull Barons on the Sunday.

Having a quick look around the NIHL teams I noticed a couple of interesting acqisitions player wise had been made with Widnes Wild (NIHL 2)having just acquired their third import in Daniel Haid (Germany) who turned out against Sheffield Senators last night and grabbed a couple of goals. Altrincham Aces appear to have picked up a high scoring import in Vlads Vulkanovs (Latvian) who rattled off four goals against Telford Tigers 2 on Sunday and has stats of 35+10 in 13 games. I believe these two may be students. Daniel Haid has certainly played as a student in Sheffield within the BUIHA set up. You would think that among the intake of students in Nottingham that there just has to be a couple or so ice hockey players that would like a crack at hockey other than at student level?

Aggregate Scores: Hawks win 10-6 Barons win 5-1
The Lions put up a more than creditable performance against the Barons tonight given previous clashes between these two. The Lions picked up two players late this week with Connor Glossop returning and newcomer Ashley Calvert who spent some of his junior days in Nottingham before moving on to the Steeldogs and latterley Leeds Chiefs. The team travelled to Solihull with the two additions but missing five other first team players. Period Scores: 1-0/3-1/1-0. Scorers: Harry Hopkins 1+0 and Connor Glossop 0+1. Joshua Crane in the nets had an excellent game with a 92.65 facing 68 shots for the five goals. Ashley had a rather tough reception being sent for an early shower at 51.50. Solid performance overall.

Weekend Games: 25.01.20 Billingham Stars v Blackburn Hawks Sutton Sting v Whitley Warriors Solway Sharks v Nottingham Lions
26.01.20 Blackburn hawks v Billingham Stars Whitley Warriors v Sutton Sting Nottingham Lions v Solihull Barons
A very tiring prospect for the Lions over the weekend as our guys take the long trip up to Solway commencing their journey at around 7.00am for a 3.30pm face off against top of the table Sharks who might be smarting a tad from their recent elimination by the Murrayfield Racers from the NIHL Cup. The Lions then face their old friends the Solihull Barons on home ice with a 7.30pm face off. The Barons have the luxury of a day off on the Saturday so should be well rested for their short hop across to Nottingham on Sunday. The schedule gets no lighter as the Lions meet the first and third placed teams this weekend with a trip to Scotland thrown in for good measure. Taking a close look at the Solway team I noted they are also heading the Scottish equivalent of their national league/conference. I also noted that they had withdrawn from the under u20s league with their under u16s languishing at the bottom of their league. Their u14s appear to be doing quite well sitting in 2nd spot of their league. Always good to get an overall view at a top club from senior level downwards to look at what the future might hold regarding player development. There are times when I think I should be more productive in other areas of my life?

After a long trip north yesterday against top of the conference the Lions had to travel home and prepare to meet the third placed Barons at home. As expected always going to be an uphill battle against two of the strongest teams in the conference and that is exactly how the weekend panned out. Period Scores against Solway: 2-0/2-0/4.0. Period scores against Solihull: 1-4/0-3/0-4. The only goal scored tonight came from the newly returned Connor Glossop which may help his confidence back in the game. The positive that can be gained from this weekend is that the Lions upped their SOG with 22 at Solway Sharks and 20 against the Barons.

The most recent and welcome addition to the Lions Ashley Calvert suffered injuries at the weekend firstly returning from the Solway Sharks game with a broken nose. He turned out on Sunday against the Barons and in that game he was hit by a heavily shot puck to his foot causing a broken bone. It appears to be sods law to lose an experienced player so early but rank bad luck in Ashley's case. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Well, after the Lions and the NIHC have invested a load of time, effort & money into live-streaming games, providing video for training purposes, etc... the EIHA have well and truly shafted us all:- nihc.co.uk/2020/02/01/filming-and-live-streaming-ends-at-nihc-with-immediate-effect/Sorry, ladies and germs... but the Lions YouTube channel will no longer be able to show live home games. What an utter pile of <self-moderated>

It is with regret and a strong element of anger that I have to report that all live streaming from The Nottingham Junior Ice Hockey Club is to cease forthwith at the NIC due to, to my mind anyway, a narrow minded and ill thought out directive from the EIHA. Earlier in the season an attempt to close the live streaming of the Lions games was attempted by the EIHA but was thwarted as an agreement/consent with visiting teams was activated via direct communications with those teams concerned. Safeguarding is of paramount importance and of that there can be no denial but there comes a point where a farcical line is crossed and I believe that has occurred in this case and by this draconian decision by an out of touch bunch of jobsworths. Does this mean that nothing goes out on social media because if it does there must be one hell of a backlog of stuff out there to be viewed and of that there can be no doubt judging by the number of mobile media collecting equipment turning up at junior games. At conference level within the junior system I believe streaming does occur or should it be now said has occurred as this decision by the powers that be must bring a end to that also? Are there to be a hordes of safeguarding officers on duty at all junior games looking out for the use mobile phones or are phones to be handed on entering the rink and returned as the customer leaves for home? Sounds daft I know but where is the line drawn? Are team photos, receiving of awards, or local press coverage banned from now on? Come on EIHA you have thrown down the gauntlet on this issue now back it up with the evidence that led to this decision, where is your collective rationale? I am led to believe that a senior EIHA official has posted photos taken at junior club level on Twitter, how are you at the EIHA intending to deal/justify that situation? I am led to believe that there are a couple of clubs that appear to be at the forefront in pushing this issue at the EIHA level with possibly too much influence regarding decision making, and with this issue in particular. The Nottingham Junior Club invested a substantial amount of money on some top notch streaming equipment having first checked out that this could be used at that level and policies put in place based on very good advice at the top level regarding safeguarding issues, and passed. The EIHA instead of encouraging innovation to raise the profile of the minority sport they supposedly support actively have placed a barrier that will not move this sport forward and could in fact decrease the interest and the access they, again, supposedly desire. Where will this all end I am just gobsmacked by this decision. Well that's it, rant over I feel a sort of calm normality descending, probably limited and only for now.

Whitley Warriors take over at the top after a 4 point weekend against the former top team the Solway Sharks. Two comprehensive wins that have to be devastating on the part of Martin Grubb's Sharks. Whitley with a now five point lead and two games in hand. The Lions shocked the Hawks as they took the first period 0-2. The Hawks finally woke up to the fact they were in a real battle and at 28 mins the Hawks pulled one back and then went on to win the period 4-1. The final period was a tighter affair as the Hawks took the period 2-1 and with the Lions pulling the keeper they suffered an empty net 7th goal against. Dean Andrew Bowater turned out once again in the net and produced a 92.11% return with some big stops on the night. Dean turned out for his own team the Hull Jets in NIHL 2 last night and pulled off a shut out as the Jets destroyed last year's NIHL 2 champions the Widnes Wild 12-0. Luca Sheldon travelled as back up but saw no action tonight but his time will come. Scorers: Thomas Palmer 1+1, Luke Thomas 1+1, Oliver Ellis 1+0, Hamish Hall 1+0, Harry Hopkins 0+1, Thomas Dermott 0+1.

STATEMENT FROM EIHA Re LIVE STREAMING
NEWS: Live streaming and broadcast of junior hockey in EIHA
February 2, 2020
The EIHA would like to clarify their recent document on the streaming of junior ice hockey which has been issued to clubs by the Association’s Safeguarding Team.
The policy only relates to junior league and tournament games under the EIHA umbrella. It does not impact NIHL, WNIHL or games sanctioned by another governing body (eg Elite, IHUK, SIH).
The policy does not prevent games being filmed for internal player training/development, player safety/discipline or officials’ training/development. This footage can be shared internally as long as it is not put into the public domain (eg social media, YouTube etc).
By completing the EIHA’s GDPR form as part of their annual registration with the Association, parents/guardians/carers and children/young people/adults will have confirmed their consent or limits to consent to the use of their personal data, but this cannot be assumed to be confirmation of consent to live streaming.
In practice where footage of a junior game or tournament will be put into the public domain, Club A would approach Club B two weeks before the game with their intention to stream/broadcast. Club B, having knowledge of their players’ preferences at registration, would give their agreement or otherwise. If agreement is given then the footage can be published/streamed.
The policy gives a best-practice guide for managing the stream and minimising risk to children and young people involved.
Where agreement is not given then the footage can not be streamed or published in any form. The game can still be recorded for internal use as previously mentioned.
The EIHA recognises the benefit clubs can get from using images of young participants to promote and celebrate activities, events and competitions. Some coaches also find it helpful to use photographs or videos as a tool to support a young athlete’s skills development.
However, the use of photos and videos on websites and social media, and in posters, the press or other publications, can pose direct and indirect risks to children and young people if not managed correctly.
Some element of common sense at last but the last paragraph does not appear to answer the question re the EIHA official publishing photos on Twitter or was it managed, whatever that means, correctly? I can only assume that official in question is now breathing a sigh of relief and case closed? The Lions games can now be streamed and the facility used for internal use when covering on ice trainig.

NIHL 1 09.02.20 Whitley Warriors v Blackburn Hawks Billingham Stars v Solihull Barons Nottingham Lions v Solway Sharks
The Lions game is an early face off planned for 5.40pm therefore a good time for families with school children to see some ice hockey. Solway Sharks lost their number one spot at the hands of the Whitley Warriors who then snatched the lead from the beleaguered Sharks. The Sharks will travel south with a point to prove starting with Sutton Sting on Saturday and following that up with a trip to Nottingham to face the Lions on Sunday.

On Saturday a short bench Lions travelled to Billingham with Dean Bowater standing in once again in nets for the Nottingham team. Period scores 3-0/1-1/3-0. The only goal was scored by Owen Davis unassisted. In tonight’s game against the Hawks things were a bit tighter but the result ended with a Hawks win. The Hawks import was involved in 5 of the 6 goals which shows that having that extra experience can make a massive difference in tight games. Period scores 2-2/1-2/0-2. Scorers Louie Andrew Newell 2+0, Owen Davis 1+0, Cameron Pywell 0+2, Jack Matthew Crowston 0+2, Toby Fisher 0+1, Ellis Ricci 0+1.

Northern Cup Final 2nd Leg Whitley Warriors 4 Murrayfield Racers 3
Murrayfield take the Northern Cup with an overtime win as the teams were tied after tonight’s game 6-6. Game and Cup winning goal at 63 minutes. Well done to the Racers winning the Northern and Solihull Barons for taking the Midland Cup.

The scores in the Lions games do not give the whole story as the team put in some great performances against solid experienced teams in the Sting and the Hawks. In the Sutton Sting game in the first period the Lions made a slow start with the Sting taking full advantage. The second and third periods saw the Lions put the Sting under real pressure to the point where their imports were used throughout the game. Of the seven goals scored by the Sting their imports were involved in six. Over the final two periods the Lions out shot the Sting and tied both periods. Dean Andrew Bowater netninder of the NIHL 2 Hull Jets stood in again for the Lions. Period Scores: 5-0/1-1/1-1. Scorers: Thomas Palmer 1+1, Toby Fisher 1+0, Louie Andrew Newell 0+1, Ben Wilson 0+1, Jordan Wright 0+1. The Hawks having come off with an overtime loss against second placed Solway Sharks last night were really up for this one and with junior netminder Luca Sheldon playing,I believe, his first full game it looked a particularly big ask of the boys but they did put in a full 60 mins and for the first time knocked in 41 shots against the Hawks 54. Dean Andrew Bowater was turning out for his Hull team tonight so not available but Sheldon put in a great performance given the opposition. Period Scores: 2-1/3-0/3-0. Scorers: Cameron Pywell 1+0, Jack Matthew Crowston 0+1, Bailey Martin Challans 0+1. These guys are learning and within a couple of seasons, should they stick around, they will be a formidable force.

Had a word with Matt Bradbury abut the weekend games and he appeared pleased with the way the team responded to two tough games against the Sting and Hawks. He did say that the Lions put real pressure on both teams but did not get all that they deserved from the performances they put in, but in the end it is about converting that pressure into goals and that did not occur. The Lions went short benched against the Hawks on Sunday and were missing players due to other commitments. In some ways that has been a constant headache for the coaches and the team but that is the situation and difficult as it is they have to just get on with the job and play the game, and that is precisely what they have done. Whitley Warriors are the NIHL 1 Conference Champions following their win in a somewhat heated encounter when winning in Solihull against the Barons who suffered a blank weekend. Congratulations to Coach David Longstaff's Warriors on their success.
