This weekend the Lions have just one game - at home to Billingham Stars on Sunday. As per last season, the face-off time for games against the most northerly-based opponents has been brought forward to 5:30pm, making it a lot more friendly to families as well as those having to travel a long way.
So if you're not going down to Coventry with the Panthers...

Tonight's Results: Whitley Warriors 4 Solway Sharks 9, Blackburn Hawks 3 Sutton Sting 2. The Nottingham Lions certainly gave the Billingham Stars a game tonight although the points headed to the North east as Billingham ran out in a 2-6 game. The Lions did take the third period. Period scores: 0-3/0-2/2-1. Scorers:Ruskin Hughes 1+0, Thomas Parkinson 1+0, Jakub Klima 0+1, and Cameron Pywell 0+1. Alan Levers had his first taste of conference action tonight so a good opportunity to loosen up for the battles ahead. Overall a tighter result and a strong third period.

Weekend Games: Saturday Solihull Barons v Whitley Warriors. The Lions take to the road as they head up to Scotland to take on the Solway Sharks. Not the most envious of tasks for Matt Bradbury's team as he meets up with his old friend from his playing days the Head Coach of the Sharks, Martin Grubb.
Sunday: Whitley Warriors v Blackburn Hawks, Billingham Stars v Sutton Sting. The Lions, after their long journey home from north of the border, entertain the Solihull Barons with a 7.30pm face off.

Tonight’s Results: Solihull Barons 4 Whitley Warriors 3. Overtime win for the Barons. The Lions set off for Scotland with a formidable task ahead of them which became somewhat of a nightmare as the netminder Ashley Smith received a 5+game for a slashing offence. At the time the Lions were down 6-1. Young back up netminder Luca Sheldon took over in his first senior game for the last 15 minutes of the game with the game ending 12-2 to the Solway Sharks. Goal scorers Paul Stanley 1+0, Ruskin Hughes 1+0, Cameron Pywell 0+1, Jakub Klima 0+1, Kieran Ryan in his first game back with the Lions 0+1, and young Jack Parker laying down his first marker with 0+1. A rather bitter end to a game where the Lions were, losing yes, but with a more acceptable scoreline until the no 1 keeper received his game penalty. An opportunity for Luca to get some ice time against the quality of players he had until tonight never faced. The Lions now have the long journey home to face before preparing themselves for the visit of the Solihull Barons for a 7.30pm face off on Sunday.

Tonight’s Results: Whitley Warriors 2 Blackburn Hawks 5, Billingham Stars 3 Sutton Sting 6. The Lions appear to be really struggling to get anything going and this is showing in a string of very poor results. The team has more quality than they are showing and they hopefully know that and will start to make teams work to achieve tighter results. It really is a bit of a mystery how having lost just a couple of players from last season and having picked up more than enough to cover those players little is coming right. Plenty of games to work on putting things right because losses such as tonight’s cannot really continue. Goal scorers Ruskin Hughes 1+0, Jakub Klima 1+0, Thomas Parkinson 0+1, Joseph Gretton 0+1, Paul Stanley 0+1 in their 2-14 reversal. From what I gather the team remains strong and they are bonding well and the youngsters are coping well with the greater intensity at this level, it’s just a matter of staying focused, working hard for the full game and some positive results should be the outcome.

Weekend games: Saturday Solway Sharks v Solihull Barons, and Sutton Sting v Whitley Warriors
Sunday: Blackburn Hawks v Solihull Barons The Nottingham Lions play at home against top of the conference and as yet unbeaten Hull Pirates. The Lions have yet another uphill task but realistically this will be how the season will be for a number of new players who have never competed at this level. As it stands the bigger budget clubs hold, as last season, the top three slots and I can see little chance of any other team in the Moralee Conference breaking into any of the first three places. It will need a major downturn in form for that to occur. I feel that the rest will be seeking a place in the play offs as their major goal for the season. This could obviously be seen as a rather pessimistic view but I believe that this view is tinged with a big chunk of realism. The Lions will do the best they can and a number of youngsters will gain great experience and they are the future. For the other guys who came along to give it a go at a higher level, well they will certainly learn that the Moralee Conference is a different beast to the conferences they played prior to coming to Nottingham. A lot of games to come and maybe the odd two pointer along the way, our guys will certainly give it a go.

Tonight’s Results: Blackburn Hawks 5 Solihull Barons 8 The Lions hit massive penalty trouble against top of the conference Hull Pirates and suffered the consequences of some questionable officiating to say the least. Although being out gunned by the Pirates the first period ended with a creditable 0-1 scoreline. The officials decisions dominated the secod period with the only Lions import Jakub Klimt letting his frustration get the better of him and received an unsportsman like conduct and a match penalty. The penalties racked up and the Pirates took full advantage with a 8 goal period with 5 being pp goals and a 1-9 lead into the third period. Ashley Smith made way for 16yr old Luca Sheldon in nets for the final 20mins a period that the Lions conceded 2-4 to give a final 2-13 scoreline. Scorers: Elliott Perin 2+0, Cameron Powell 0+1, Jack Crowston 0+1. At the end of the game the bench received a 10min misconduct as the Lions avoided the hand shake with the officials to complete a 71 min penalty tally in the game.

The Lions travelled up to Blackburn Hawks on Sunday 14th, but the match was abandoned at the start of the 2nd period due to damaged ice. Both teams agreed that the ice was unsafe, and that was that... or so we thought. Then the Blackburn Hawks tried to make out that it was all the Lions' fault, and that they wanted to carry on with the game - but couldn't, solely due to the Lions' refusing to continue the game. You can see their official line <here>As they said in that statement, the league were consulted - and they have today ruled that neither team was at fault. Details <here>As stated, the game will be re-played on 2nd March 2019. It would be nice to get an apology from the Blackburn Hawks for their attempt to put all of the blame on the Lions... but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Because Planet Ice (who own the rink) aren't prepared to invest the money required to correct the problem and the EIHA are too gutless and/or incompetent to care?

Having been off the scene due to illness I am finally in a position to get the old brain back into Lions mode. I think my age is catching up with me given my recent state but hopefully I can now move on somewhat. So the Lions have yet to put points on the board but with some reversals I have noted some rather tighter scores against some mighty competition. An 8-4 at Billingham and a 3-6 at home to the present second placed Solway are losses but these two were given a game and that is all that can be asked of this team until we get that first win. All teams are fearful of being the team that coughs up those all important points but from the Lions point of view I just hope it arrives soon. Over the past weekend the Lions travelled up the road to face the present top team the Sheffield Steeldogs with a 100% record to date. On Sunday our guys gave them a game coming away with a 6-2 reversal. Period scores: 3-1/2-1/1-0. The highlight for one of the Nottingham u20s Harry Hopkins was his 2 goal haul and MOM. Assists Cameron Pywell 0+2, and Paul Stanley 0+1. I was in conversation with someone who had attended the Lions v Warriors game and there were some pretty scathing comments regarding the officiating at that particular game. Earlier in the month I did comment following some rather suspect officiating at the Lions v Pirates home game but it appears problems are still occurring judging by again some stinging comments from a number of quarters. On occasions some showboating might be happening by some officials who might feel that the paying public are there to watch them as opposed to the two teams out on the ice. I could of course be calling this one incorrectly as it is members of the paying public who passed their comments to me as I had not attended the games in question?

Weekend Games: Saturday: Sutton Sting v Solihull Barons and Sheffield Steeldogs v Billingham Stars.
Sunday: Whitley Warriors v Sheffield Steeldogs, Hull Pirates v Sutton Sting, Solihull Barons v Solway Sharks. The Nottingham Lions entertain the Blackburn Hawks with a 7.30 face off time. Hopefully things will have settled down since the recently aborted road trip up to Blackburn occurred and the recriminations that followed the Lions refusal to continue the game given there were major problems with the ice and the possible danger to players should the game have continued.

The Nottingham Lions provided stiff opposition for the Blackburn Hawks tonight with the result hanging in the balance to the final hooter. The fourth and game winning goal appeared to come from a bad bounce off the boards that found it’s way to a very grateful Hawks player who made no mistake. The Lions were that close to their first marker on the board but unfortunately it was not to be, well tonight anyway. Some inexperience in the Lions game did show but they had enough to keep the game tight. Scorers: Jakub Klima 1+1, Ruskin Hughes 1+1, Harry Hopkins 1+0, Cameron Powell 0+1, Luke Thomas 0+1. Alan Levers placed a 90.48% save rate tonight. A good night for young defenceman Jordan Wright who has been drafted from the u20s and was tonight’s MOM. This young man came late to hockey commencing playing in his teens and came to ice hockey via The National Ice Centre Learn to Play Programme part of an increasingly important gateway for young players including late starters to this great sport.

Sunday: Blackburn Hawks v Sutton Sting, Telford Tigers v Billingham Stars. The Nottingham Lions take to the road on a daunting visit to the much improving Whitley Warriors. The Warriors having narrowly missed out last Sunday in a 1-2 loss to top of the table Steeldogs will be hoping for a perhaps easier game against the Lions. It will certainly be a tough call to bring back points from Hillhead but one just never knows?

The Lions travelled light today with five senior players unavailable for the Whitley Warriors game. Missing captain Elliott Perrin, Marc Levers, Paul Stanley, Ben Wood, and import Jakub Klima meant a real uphill battle against a Warriors team full of confidence and having a good run of late. Luke Thomas took on the captain’s role and led the Lions in what the Warriors might have thought to be easy night. The Warriors with the stronger and larger bench strength took the first period 3-0 with the Lions playing a tighter second period that they lost by only 1-0. The third period went in the Warriors favour but the Lions broke the shut out losing the period 2-1 and an overall 6-1 result to the home team. Young netminder Miles Finney had a stand out performance facing a massive 90 shots and a 93.33 save rate. Scorers: Ruskin Hughes 1+0, Harry Hopkins 0+1, and Joseph Gretton 0+1.

Weekend Games:Sheffield Steeldogs v Blackburn Hawks.
The Lions travel to Hull to play the presently third placed Pirates who have as their number one keeper Ashley Smith who did join the Lions at the start of the season before returning to his home team. Al the games for the Lions provide massive challenges whilst also providing masses of experience for the guys making the move from the junior ranks.
Sunday: Sheffield Steeldogs v Sutton Sting, Blackburn Hawks v Solihull Barons.
The Lions are at home to the Billingham Stars with an earlier 5.45pm face off so an earlier night to get the family down wanting to see some ice hockey, and some good prices to boot. When these two last met up at Billingham the Stars took the game 8-4.

Tonight’s Results: Sheffield Steeldogs 7 Blackburn Hawks 1.
The Lions travelled to Hull missing so many senior players including the two imports missing and a whole bunch of youngsters drafted in to support what was left of the older more seasoned players. I must admit when I saw tonight’s team roster I did not recognise quite a number of the players names and thought it was possibly lambs to the slaughter at a rampant third placed Hull Pirates. Miles Finney was the only netminder travelling and suffered an absolute blitz of shots on his net but still returned an 87% save rate in a 12-1 result. This guy is seeing and saving more than he picks out of his net so doing a good job under difficult circumstances. The guys did manage to break the shut out with a goal fromJack Crowston assisted by Bailey Challans both players that are new to me, but there again so were a number of others tonight. Period scores: 3-0/5-0/4/1 giving the 12-1 score line. Luke Thomas captained the team once again in the absence of team captain Elliott Perrin. Luke is one of the most committed players to the Lions and willingly picked up the challenge of captaining this radically changed side, I am sure knowing it was going to be tough out there. Billingham Stars at home tomorrow who have had the benefit of a night off before travelling to Nottingham. A 5-45pm face off planned for this game.
