agreed that there is no point inviting or accepting teams just for the sake of it, you want teams who are competitive as adding teams all it does it dilute the product you already have by having to split the same resources over more teams

Teams like Peterborough are a step down from teams like Bracknell and MK and are never going to be anywhere near Coventry Nottingham etc, if we bring teams in like Dundalk they may be small clubs now but they have good potential, it's these clubs we should be getting in.

I dont think MK will move up until they have ungraded their rink, it seats about the same as Coventry but they only get about 500 fans every week.

Its a good point that however if they can be financially secure and survive off those 500 fans then why not join up? They may only get 500 but if they are all paying then its better than other teams that get 3-4 thousand with a lot of those not paying. Things such as this is why any expansion needs to be planned properly as there are serious issues for new members to consider.

Teams of this size ideally would need to show that they have the market to expand their fanbase and the potential to do so, over a number of years and not just sign up to the Elite and hope fans and sponsorship come in. I doubt the benefits of MK entering the EIHL at this stage would outweigh the risks of overspending. I think expansion should be organic to the effect if a team proves itself to be too big for the other leagues then considered on its merits as opposed to setting out an expansion plan and trying to find teams for the quota.

Organic expansion as you put it would be ideal in a perfect world. However with the eihl and epl seemingly like enemies not wanting to work together for the future of the sport and expansion plan with a quota for teams seems a better option imo.

Yes its a shame that everone is not on the same side as far as the interests and future of the sport in this country is concerned. Maybe there is a meduim between the caucious approach I have suggested and the more planned expansion. Your suggestions are very viable, but I doubt the league is capable of making it work (IMO due to imeptness).

It doesn't seem like it would be that difficult to expand in some description, however there maybe more to it than i realise but i too have doubts about the competance of the powers that be, to be able to have a successful expansion.

I'd say, like a number of others, that the teams we need to be bringing in are those that can (or soon will) COMPETE, not make up numbers. For me that would currently mean Guildford, Dundee and Fife, I can't see any of the others competing I'm afraid. New arena teams would be potential but we keep hearing of them and then they never materialise. Liverpool now has it's new arena, where is their hockey team we were promised? As far as I'm concerned this place is crying out for a team to play there...

The Liverpool Echo Arena has a bastkeball team playing out of it but they havent had an ice plant put in i dont think.
Croydon and Brighton arenas have expressed an interest in hockey however.
Hull...if they got rid of Strachan could compete a lot better next season. I think they will stay Elite as they're fans dont want to step down.

I dont want a bunch of scousers joining the league.... I hate scousers! As for Hull.... good riddance. Boring team to watch along with classless fans in a tiny rink. Fair enough its one team less... but I can live with that

There arena hasn't had an ice plant installed as they believe they do not need it as when they get the ice shows come you can easily get a tempory ice plant brought it

As far as I'm concerned this place is crying out for a team to play there... If there was a market for hockey in that arena, then surely someone would have made sure there was a team playing out of it. Which is a sad statement on the state of hockey in this country.

Why hasnt anyone put a team in Leeds? Think of the potential!! They are in a brilliant location. Great gates against Manchester, Vipers, Hull and the Dingles are all do-able. Its a large area............ If I had the cash i'd be straight in there! What an opportunity.

If Hull City get promoted to the Premiership I think Stingrays may lose punters.
Not sure about Liverpool. Lovely arena but a football city through and through. They had a team years ago (Leopards) but they were always on the fringes.
Matt - there was a plan to put a team in Leeds a few years ago in an arena next to Elland Road. There was a bit about it in the 1997/98 Ice Hockey Annual:
"The first new Superleague franchise was awarded to Leeds on 7 December 1996.
The Caspian Group, owner of Leeds United football club, set up a subsidiary company, Leeds Ice Hockey Club Limited, which paid a £150,000 fee to the league for the exclusive rights to ice a team in the West Yorkshire area.
Caspian also agreed a separate deal with Steelers, believed to be worth £350,000. Steelers, a founding member of ISL, owned the ice hockey rights to both South and West Yorkshire areas.
Caspian, headed by Chris Akers and valued at £120 million, intend that their team should play out of an arena which they are planning as part of a new sporting complex at Elland Road.
The development calls for a £20m state-of-the-art arena seating 14,000 which is scheduled to be ready in time for the 1999/2000 season. Caspian were negotiating to buy the land in the summer of 1997.
ISL's Chief Executive, John Lord, said: "This announcement is in line with our expansion strategy to attract major investors into the sport. We are talking to other organisations and intend that the league should grow year by year."
In March 1997, former BIHA Chief Executive David Frame joined Caspian as managing director of their ice hockey and basketball teams.
The following month, the club chose the name Leeds Lasers out of 2,500 suggestions made in a competition organised by Caspian. The prize was £1,000 or a trip to watch an NHL game."
Unbelievable when I read it now, which is why I have quoted it verbatim. Two years later Caspian gained outline planning permission for the arena. Then..........nothing.
Wonder what happened to that £350,000.
