Bit of an odd one this.
It has the distinction of being the number that has been worn by most players, mainly because it was often given to those who were making their mark before finding their preferred numbers.
Exceptions include Tim Peacock, small and baby-faced, who could dribble the puck as though it was stuck to his stick.....when he wasn't fighting. Then there was Steve Cockburn, a handy player, and also one of our most extraordinary signings ever, Chuck Taylor.
Big Chuck was probably the most reviled player in Nottingham during his time as the main man in Gary Newbon's incarnation of the Solihull Barons in the late 1980s. Boy we had a few rough ones against them, and Chuck was always in the middle of it. Once, during a game here, he led the Barons off the ice. When he got them downstairs, he winked and said, "I'm only doing it to wind 'em up". Did a great job for us though.
Darryl Easson was one of our most popular players, but two weeks before the start of the 1982/3 season, following complaints from the Scottish clubs, the BIHA changed the definition of an import to anyone who had played in Canada since the age of 14. Teams were only allowed three such players and we had six. They subsequently allowed us to keep five, and Darryl was the unlucky one to be released. He was able to return in 1986/7, and was part of the teams that won the Norwich Union Trophy in 1986 and British Championship in 1989. Since then he has made a significant contribution to coaching of juniors in the UK, and here in Nottingham the shirt he once wore has passed to one of the finest young prospects in the country.
