Having read with HUGE interest the Panthers Pre-80s and Glasgow/Ayr weekenders stories....
.... it is obvious that there are an awful lot of memories and stories out there which would be of great interest and fascination to a great number of us.
There HAS to be some way we can collect these.....
BJ - could you set up an 'archive' section on here for you to collect such?
Could someone gather them together and perhaps even publish them in a hardcopy format? There's even a fundraising potential there.....
Perhaps someone close to the Panthers club itself could have a word with Gary Moran and/or Neil Black? Get the Panthers' blessing for something like this? - and maybe even some contributions from Moran, Adey etc?
Could there be contacts with past heroes and club workers? (Randall Weber, Simon Hunt, Chile, Greg Hadden, etc - or even some of the REAL old-timers?)
There is the chance for something very special here..... something that WE as fans (well, maybe not relative newbies like me, but even so....) could do in conjunction with the club - for the good of all?
What does eveyone (especially BJ!) think?

Alternatively, you could try and find yourself a copy of Spik's excellent Panthers history book full of facts and photo's from years gone by.
This is an interesting thread, I say this because there are several people who I speak to through a work-capacity who have been couple for only a few seasons and when the topic progresses onto Panthers before they were aware of the sport, not one person has been interested in the past. One person even said that (and i'm sure he doesn't mind me quoting him on here) "I couldn't care less about about what happened before, i'm only interested in the present and the future, what went before is of no concern!"
So there you go, a very contrasting (and not the only tail) of people not wanting to delve into the Panthers past.

Memo to self, it's 'tale' not 'tail'!!

But that's statistics not stories. What I'm suggesting would complement Spik's work perfectly - not compete with it. Some people may not be interested - no problem there, that's their choice. But I know for a fact that there's a lot of people who ARE interested in the past history of the club, the players, the events, the matches, goals, fights, etc etc.... And that's who I'm talking about.

I think there might be some mileage in the idea Shaggy , if it was well supported ...
In the next day or so I shall set up a corner of the forum for vintage hockey stories and see how many we get over the coming weeks .... aswell as canvassing opinion on whether these stories should be put in print ... monies raised to go to junior development? IHPA? Any other ideas?
If it looks like a popular fund raising idea then I shall approach GM and give him our thoughts ...

We could also approach various people in the sport as well...... I'm sure Gill Short @ IHUK has got Panthers stories and then some, there's Ken Taggart, Stewart Roberts, Brian Storey..... how many more?
If you wanted to take it further and 'do it properly' - we could always approach someone from each of the 'old time' clubs that the Panthers faced for THEIR remembrances on what happened when The Black And Gold came to town......?
The possibilities are legion.

Here's a thought.......
Forget the recent rivalry with Sheffield...... what about one of the longer-term rivalries - that of Panthers vs Cardiff? There's plenty of 'old-timer' Cardiff fans out there, and I'm sure it's a goldmine of stories about various events and meetings between The Red Army and The Black And Gold........
Whitley Bay? Fife Flyers? Paisley Pirates, as has been mentioned elsewhere?

Hope this idea DOES get off the ground, it certainly deserves to. I would personally LOVE to know more about OUR beloved team. I am still 'Wet behind the ears' when it comes to pre-NIC Panthers. In my opinion, this is a sure fire winner...as their is NO real other form for 'newbies' such as myself to find out stuff, apart from the snatched conversations with people who lived through the Glory Years. Fantastic idea Shaggy.... let's see this works!

Great idea.
You missed Panthers v Streatham as a rivalry as well.

i think this is a fantastic idea. I am a relative "newby" to the beautiful game and a very new fan of the mighty black and gold (had my arm twisted by a certain couple of members of my family not mentioning any names BJ!) but i would certainly be interested in any book like this. If there is a real project here, then let me know if i can help in anyway? obviously having been a fan for only a couple of months, and having only made it to 1 game so far, i have no stories to provide, but if i can help with colaberating and collecting in any way then let me know.

Okay ... people are sounding positive so we'll give it a go ... keep an eye out for the vintage board in the next day or so ... I hope we can get this to work. With or without official blessing it's surely got some mileage to run to raise some money for charity so I'm willing to take it on. We'll see what stories we can get and take it from there. Hopefully we'll be able to get the club onside to make things easier ...
I'll send the e-mails, make the phone calls etc ... but its YOU that has the hard work to do and commit your memories to print ...

This sounds like a fun, and very worthwhile project - kind of a history of the panthers through the eyes of the fans. I for one would love to have this in a book format - whether that's a proper printed and bound thing, or a "home produced" booklet kind of production. I would guess that would depend on the number of stories.
Just a few thoughts:
Someone (or more than one) need to be responsible for actually selecting the stories from those offered. I'm not being funny here, but the stories need to be well written, amusing and coherent. That's not as easy as it sounds - but if written in the vein of the ones we've already had, they should be good.
If we're going to publish this in any form - can we have someone check spelling/grammar etc? Depending on the amount to do, I could certainly do at least some of that.
I guess what I'm trying to say is - if we're going to put it in printed format, lets be professional about it. I am sure that between us we have the skills - lets join together and do something for the Panthers, and celebrate the community which is the Panthers fans. The team members come and go - we're here (in spirit if not geographically), year in and year out - lets celebrate that!

Makes sense..... What we probably need is one or a few people who have been around the Panthers for some time (ie: 10+ years) to sort out what should be accepted and what not.... given as there are likely to be multiple accounts of the same event in some cases. We could also do with one or more people to work on finding people to give us stories - people from Whitley, Durham, Paisley, Streatham etc...... people maybe now in positions of authority in the sport, who will have stories to tell. (How about asking Moray Hanson about the time the Panthers put a hatful of goals past him? ) Maybe even contacting old Panthers players? I couldn't do the former, obviously - being a relative newbie - but I'd be happy to help out with the latter. Before anything gets finally sorted out, though - we need to get a clear idea of what CAN be done.... as in, what kind of response would be forthcoming. See how many stories come in without much chasing. Then to find out if the Panthers would like to be involved in any way...... Imagine the archive of information that this could produce......?

Well said Lynne and very pertinent. You could just be talking yourself into a job here Well, I don't know people in the business to ask for stories, and I've only been a supporter since the first year in the NIC, so can't contribute stories of my own. However, I would be more than happy to "proof read" things for typos, grammatical errors, check that it makes sense etc. I do actually enjoy that kind of thing, and have done it a fair amount in the past and like to think that I'm pretty observant on it!

Great idea to put something together based on fans' memories and anecdotes.
A couple of points. Firstly, it needs to be well co-ordinated and not rushed, if we're going to do it, it has to be done properly. I'd certainly be interested in working on it. As someone who dabbles in writing anyway, and does editing/proofreading professionally I can contribute to putting the finished product together.
Secondly, not sure about getting this officially backed by the club. While that would help in terms of access to information and for distribution, I can't help thinking that the project might be taken over and turned into another Nottingham Panthers official publication, rather than the memories of the fans, which is what we want it to be. I see a big argument in favour of keeping it independent.
Anyway, I will start putting a few memories together from my 23 years watching the team! Where to start.........

it sounds like a great idea and something i've often thought about over the 24 years we've been watching the panthers both home and away. I've got a fair few photos of road trips especially Wembley weekends i'll dig out and would love to contribute to the memories,i'll get thinking.......

Fife Flyers? Paisley Pirates, as has been mentioned elsewhere? Panthers Vs Cardiff & Panthers Vs Fife were always much more fruitier than our games with Steelers. Their fans were always up for a wee bit of banter, especially the Flyers' fans. None of the nastiness, and no one from either team spouting off in the media, saying "We are THE be all & end all of British hockey"

As someone who dabbles in writing anyway, and does editing/proofreading professionally I can contribute to putting the finished product together. Sounds to me like you've just talked yourself into a job there, Ian! ;D Look - if this thing is to go ahead..... it needs one or more people (2 or 3 is probably best) to spearhead the thing - organise, recruit, collate, etc. It can't be me.... for a start, it IMHO needs to be people who have been around the Panthers for years in double figures..... plus I've got the Friends Of The Lions stuff to do. I'm happy to help out - I tend to talk to/encounter a lot of people outside EIHL fanbases, so I'm happy to pursue people to give us stories.... So - any volunteers?Independent is what I'd suggested - as in, run by and for the fans - but it would be stupid (not to mention insulting) not to inform the club and ask for contributions or aid...... Like Spik's stats book - this needs to be something that WE do - us, the fans of the Nottingham Panthers. But I'm sure that if we (whoever) talked reasonably and amicably to the club, they wouldn't put any obstacles in the way - and may well help us out. Co-operation rather than confrontation.....

Hi all, I've been a fan since the team came back to Nottingham in the early 80's. I went to the first game back at the old barn, and the bulk of stuff I've kept is from the first couple of seasons. I've got books, a photo set of each player from the original team, signed sticks, programmes, etc. Let me know if you need any info/stories, etc. Cheers TGQ

TGQ, stories are always welcome - feel free to share them with us any time you feel inclined.
There are many fans amongst us who know little detail of Panthers or hockey in general prior to the advent of the NIC.
Cheers - MP
