big brett! hell yeah! would be awesome getting more sessions huh? cant wait. nottingham arena are more favorable to ice dancing and figure skating rather than hockey, so you'll probably find the easyist of admin with them a nightmare

Cheers JB. I am having a knee operation (ligaments) on Wednesday which is going to keep me out for at least a few weeks, but I might pop down Monday just to watch for a while. What do you look like - i'll say hello.

I would be really interested getting involved with this. Skating wise I am OK, however I have only been skating for about 5 weeks (after a 14 year gap, so fairly good considering). I have no hockey experience, however one of the reasons I gave up skating in the first place was as I didn't have the chance to play hockey when I was a kid (due to family commitments), so this is a life long ambition of mine. I have been trying to find out if there is a set up like this but couldn't find one anywhere. Was also thinking about contacting the Northstars about going down one Monday night but not sure how serious they are and if I would even get the chance to Ice.

jms - I recently started playing with the Northstars, I too had no hockey experience, I started skating last spring as something to do with my son, prior to which I had skated literally only a couple of times as a kid. I had intended to start playing with the Avalanche and turned up for my first session the first night they didn't play.
The northstars typically are of a good standard of play which is certainly a bit faster and sometimes heavier hitting than that of the Avalanche. I would say they consist primarily of uni students with a couple of ex-panthers and a few 30 somethings thrown into the mix.
I have never been made to feel unwelcome despite my inexperience, although I have to try and fight for the puck since passes are a little infrequent I would hope this will improve through as I hopefully improve.
If this is something you really want to do don't be put off do as I did and just bite the bullit and give it a go. At the end of the day more regular attenders only helps to cement the future of a team, and don't forget the majority of the northstars players would appear to be students, you'd have to assume most of them will be going home for the summer extra players will be necessary!

Thanks for the reply puckhead. This certainly gives me a bit more confidence to give the Northstars a try. I am going to the general session tonight and was thinking about staying after to watch to see what its like. Is there anyone I need to speak to before turning up? Also I take it that you had all the equipment the first time you went?

hey jms i know what you're saying. ive been there only a year ago. I play every monday night with the northstars. Im also from long eaton. I might know you! how old are you? get all your kit and give it ago. alot of the guys who ice play for other teams and are not registered with northstars. the more the merrier. i dont think you need to speak to anyone before turning up. on arrival youl probs see us going in the changing room. just go in and look for a guy called welly who takes the money and let him know you are new. if you introduce your self to anyone they will be friendly! Its pretty fast paced but theres a good handfull of novice skaters including myself. Once this starts up it will be ideal for first time icers. but in the mean time get on down on monday nights.
usually go to changing room at 9:45 on the ice for 10:20-30 untill about 11:30 sometimes 12. Warm up then scrimage game. everyone takes it in turn to change up on the bench so youl get fair ice time. or you can skip shifts if you want to.

maybe it probably time to cap the number of players now as 26 players you will fnd that you will struggle to get any worthy ice time for your £7 or what ever

Jonny Bravo - I hung around for till about 11 watching to get a feel for what its like. Think I need a another month or so getting back into the swing of things before icing. Spoke to a couple of guys there, one didn't really know a great deal and the other said that the guy that arranges it wasn't there tonight. Told me to come down the week after next as it is not on next week to get more info. To answer your other question. I'm 26, I live just off Station Road in Long Eaton.
evo - Sorry didn't notice you. There are a few people there I keep seeing time and again. You might have noticed me skating round In a forest training top and wearing glasses. Was a bit annoying with the barrier there tonight though. I'm going to be going most Mondays for the next few weeks, would be good to get to know some people there as skating round on my own can get boring at times. You will have to let me know when your next there. That way you can let me know how much improvement I need before I can consider practicing with the Northstars

Just to update people, we are currently on a waiting list for ice time, the sunday night avalanche slot was taken by the uni. But there is alot of ice time shortly being made available so we should be fine to get started pretty soon. I will post details as soon as the NIC contact me.

Is this going to be 18+?
I am insured for the Nottingham Vipers but not sure if this would carry over?

As i recall from other conversations if its a 'proper' team insurance doesnt carry over... you have to be insured once with the EIHA then once per team... I think. Thats how i understood it

I was just checking the ice schedule on the NIC website for the next public skating session on the arena rink and noticed it is showing that the old avalanche slot is free for atleast the next 6 weeks! nottingham-arena.com/nic/icesports/SCHEDULE.xls

If this is correct i will be seriously miffed! I am going to call up tomorrow morning and see what they say. I was told we are in line for some summer ice time as alot of teams are finishing for the summer. I enquired about the sunday slot that the avs used to have but was told its now used by the uni?
I'll post tomorrow to keep everyone updated.

Thats how i understood it I'm insured with the Vipers and with the Lynx... costing about £110 for the season. So does this mean I'd have to pay again if I were to be insured for the rec team as well?

Uni enquired about the sunday slot and the NIC have been saying it belongs to the uni since BUT iv only ever seen empty ice on a sunday night.
Becky, you need a level 2 coach on the ice otherwise you invalidate everyone elses insurance, regardless of whether you have your own insurance or not. The coach must be at every session aswell not just registered to the team
