D'Oh - that's done it ;D Break out the worm mops, someone's just knocked the tin over! Haha!! Its true though! If they have such big budgets, as some reports say they spend more than some EILHL clubs, then why dont they grow a pair and take the step up??

As far as Slough/ Guildford/ Bracknell stepping up to this league goes...they may be able to afford 4 imports (I think it is) at the usual import rate of £400 - £600 a week but their Brits will be playing for fun basically.
Could they afford £7100 a week on wages in the EIHL compared to the estimated £3000 in the EPL?! That is a hell of a lot over a season is it not? Many Brits playing in that league see it as a stepping stone and aren't going to be on Tait/ Clarke/ Weaver wages are they?
I can't see it myself for a good couple of years...although I'd love Bracknell to be back in the top flight!

The general point still holds true though, it is an advantage we have over most European countries when it comes to recruiting North Americans.

trouble is though nem who wants to leave the situation as it is now?... Great for our teams (and yes i know panthers are NOT whiter than white so no need for the over elaboration now is there?), but where would that leave basinstoke etc who wont be able to afford to compete if bidding wars occurred? ie the taits and the weavers of this world?... Yes the wagecap is a joke and if it stays as it is then it is not going to be policed effectively HOWEVER other leagues/sports/countries run a wagecap AND police it so why cant we? The bottom line as i see it is that it is down to the honour and trustworthiness of the teams involved in the league to play it fairly, IF they cannot be trusted to honour an agreement about wages then a wagecap is needed right? Which team(s) in our league do you think cannot be trusted and hence need a wagecap in place to prohibit them buying success? Couldnt be the ones trying their damndest now to circumvent the minimalist restrictions by "thinking outside the box" now could it? ie the probable biggest spenders now, without any restriction (and that is what i am reading between the lines of nem/rick) we get back to the days of those who spend the most win the most it sounds like that is what you are asking for? Mmmm after the signing of Tessier kind of makes you think doesnt it?!!....

You trying to tell us something, Doom?! ;D I just thought it interesting to see what people's views were back then and how some of the predictions about what might happen have turned out. Basingstoke have had financial troubles.....I believe Simmsey said they were the top spenders on wages at that time. Talk of Edinburgh, Manchester, Hull and Newcastle getting together over their concerns regarding the wage-cap. I think the likes of Sheffield and Nottingham need to be very careful if they want to be part of a stable 10 team league. If I've got time I'll try and dig out the other pre season thread about wages. Regards Doom

I bet that everytime in the league is over the wagecap, the only reason we dont fall flat on our arses is becaue of our arena, we probably make enough money through merchandise, sponsers and games obviously where as the smaller teams with a smaller revenue suffer more. Makes sense really.....it all comes down to the fact that certain teams can cope with breaking the cap however some cant.

Regards Doom you probably also find that at least two of those four (newcastle manchester edinburgh and hull) are breaking the wage cap too but as has been said before the wage cap is not a legal thing and never will be. if everyone spent to the wage cap how many people would stay watching? i mean how boring have alot of the games been with edinburgh and hull over the last couple of years?
