Cannot really comment on Drouin because I have never seen him play. But from talking to other fans (Panthers and other EIHL fans) he, at least, was a good player when he was first with the Panthers.
I am very happy with Neilson. Got a lot of undeserved slack from time to time, when I thought he was having a good game. A few silly mistakes at times, but almost nearly always redeemed himself whether it be some good defensive work, or a 'Corey magic' slapshot. Welcome back Corey

Just had a thought. If McAaslan also returns then him and Drouin can't play on a line together as a PC & a Mac aren't compatible ;D I'll get me coat............ ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png)

Jono, that was terrible ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) i have to wonder whether Drouin and Corey would get two seperate wages, say a smaller one as the playing staff then a bigger chunk towards there other off ice positions therefore giving them the wage they want but also not taking up half as much of the cap, if this is in fact true then we could be getting Corey for less than last year and also have enough in the pot for another damn good foreward in the shape of Mac. this is of course is based on off ice staff not counting towards the wage cap, something which i doubt as it would have been silly last year to have wasted money on an assistant coach rather than bolstering the roster Nick

To be honest Im at a loss to see how Corey has done enough to warrant a new contract offer. I appreciate that we all have different opinions but the statement that #76 was "amazing all last year" has to be the most laughable Ive seen in about 5 years reading the cage. He turned up for the play offs which isn't good enough. I want a player that is gong to play for the whole season, not just for 4 or 5 games at the end.
In terms of his defensive abilities I'm struggling to think of many worse import D men to pull on a Panthers jersey in the last 10 years. His positional play is dreadful, he can't pass and for a man of his size his toughness is poor. Clearly his plus point is that he puts points on the board and yes, points win prizes. It would be interesting to see however to what extent this extra points production is cancelled out by calamitous defensive play.
As for PC, what a player. If he can reproduce some of the form he had a few seasons ago then this is a great signing. Shame to see Calle leave, didn't really see that one coming. It doesn't really seem clear who's decision it was for him to go but at least it appears to be amicable. Good luck for the future Calle.

Nick If that is the case then its a very very clever move by the panthers management just how long before everyone else's catches onto it? I never saw PC Drouin on his first spell in Nottingham hope he can still produce the goods and if he's as good as people say he is on 'one on one's' i see more penalties shootouts on the horizon. if we can get a certain former line mate of PC's as well then id be even happier! As regards the re-signing of Corey i didn't really expect him back i only hope he puts in more consistent performances in the league than last year. As other people have said if its playoff Corey then excellent! For me when the guys on form he's fantastic but when he's bad he can be a liability. Maybe after the first year he'll be more used to the speed of play, rink size etc and it can only help as he's back with at least 2 guys he played with last year. Sad to see Calle leave been a great servant to the team. Good luck!

everyone else has been doing it for years, why do you think the likes of belfast, manchester et al have player/coaches ?? Who can forget the so-called "creative accounting" from sheffield a few years back?....

Well, one surprise and one not...
Not surprised that Neilson is back. His regular season was... somewhat variable, shall we say? But he showed what he could really do in the play-offs - if he can maintain that level of performance, then we should be more than happy. Added to Rees and Meyers, Neilson should help to make our blueline corps into a strong and well-seasoned unit.
I know the rumours were already out there (aren't they always?) but I most certainly AM surprised by the return of Drouin. Didn't think we'd see the likes of him back at the lower wage level. Hey ho, times change, wage expectations change...
I confess to a certain amount of uncertainty, even worry as regards Drouin. Skilled all to hell and gone (quite possibly the single best scorer of one-on-ones I've ever seen in this country) one worry was quite simply - that was then, this is now... and can he still hack it? If he still was wowing them in Morzine last year, that could put that particular worry to rest. And on the concern about his attitude/team skills... well - if Mike Ellis is confident enough to sign him, then who am I to argue? If he's been a player/assistant coach for a year or two, that speaks well of his teamwork potential.
Sad to see the departure of Calle Carlsson... the last remaining player left in Nottingham from the first ice hockey game I ever watched (Panthers' pre-season against Malmo Red Hawks, 1999-2000 season). He's been a great asset to this club, and I wish him well in whatever he turns his hand to. Pop back now and then to say hello to us will you, Calle?

PC Drouin was an excellent player in the ISL days, whether time has been kind time is a different story. Him and Mark Smith played together in 05-06 so could they be reuinted?

Ooh wouldn't that be nice.....for us Panthers, at least. Especially if PC still has the pace he used to, that would be a line to take some catching. Yes please <crosses fingers>

Player coaches yes. but as far as i know they've not had a player/assistant of Drouin's quality at, as far as the wage cap is concerned half price.

Well I for one am pleased about Neilson. I was confident all season that his ability would finally show through ( I had hoped it would have come slightly earlier then the playoff's but who cares, it came) I felt at the trophy parade on easter monday that he wanted to come back and think as many that both these signings are clever moves by Ellis. Im sorry Calle has gone but...I didn't think he contributed as much as he should have done last season. So on wards and upwards.

Pleased with both signings. As for lack of Brits, with the main core of British players already snapped up, the biggest two left are Matty and Clarkie. But that is all out skaters, Perhaps part of the PC deal is Stevie Lyle. As much as I want Rasta back, Lyle would mean an extra import forward, taking Clarke's place. But thats all speculation. The problem with that would be if Lyle was injured we'd have to release/deregister an outskater to replace him. I'd rather we went with an import goalie myself. Excellent signings, very pleased. ;D Agrt on the excellent signing, PC i never saw play so looking forward to that, as for corey was a fan last season and glad to see him return ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) but Why does everyone always insist bringing the injury thing up, i really dont see that as a problem as i really dont see lyle getting injured if he plays for us, he isnt injury prone as far as i know and is a very efficient goalie, i really would not be worried with him being in our net, having that extra import outskater and winning titles ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

The worst defenceman in ten years ? ? ? ? ?
I give you:
Jeff Sebastian Jan Krulis Brent Pope Daryl Lavoie Ryan Gillis - Wheres Ryan? Marcus Adlofson
I doubt many would argue that they were better than Corey

Marcus Adlofson I doubt many would argue that they were better than Corey # I didn't say he was the worst in ten years, I said in terms of defensive ability I'm struggling to think of many worse in ten years. And by the looks of it, so are you! 6 import defencemen in 10 years hardly speaks volumes about #76's ability and a couple of them are debatable.

what i dont understand is jonno the guy played well most of the year. The spin beforehand did him no favours as well and probably you expected along with others a superstar as he was billed to be. That was not his fault and lets be honest that was last year, so new season new beginning and far more knowledge of what is required i think that is a positive outlook on corey's signing. ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) The guy has just signed again for this year give him a break, also what i have seen on and off the ice he has time for all the fans. As for PC well done mike ;D

Happy with both of these signings, like a few people have said, especially Dave E, Corey took an awful lot unfair stick in my opinion. Yes he made errors, but so did everyone else on the team. He came good in a lot of games and once he got his confidence sorted out and got to know the British game a bit better he was quality. His worst performances came in the loosing streak when we still had Lindsay and the begining of Rasta's time here, when confidence in the team was down. Plus I don't think he got on particularly well with Simoes. I think he will be a big part of our team and will prove his worth.
PC, well I am amazed with this signing. I saw his last season here in Nottingham, it was my first season that I came, and despite the fact I didn't know the game, didn't really know what was going on tbh, he was a quality player, and still is looking at his stats and from what people have said.

Pleased with both signings.
I had Neilson in my fantasy league team last season, but at times I was in dispair at some of his performances.
However, i think that now Neilson has had a season in this country and because he will have responsibilty with the fitness coach aspect I feel we will have a more focused player and that will be to the panthers benefit.
As for PC well a fans favourite and when hes in the mood i think he is untouchable on the ice. There were times I felt that he went missing in a game but under Ellis I don't think this will be an issue.
As for Clarke - if Mark Smith comes our way (rumours get stronger) Clarke would surely want to be involved in a team with those two players.
I think these 2 recent signings will put Panthers fans minds at rest. For sure Steelers have signed about 40 players now, it seems they want to sign whos even remotley available, but signing them is one thing, getting them to play as a team unit cough * Tessier* cough is quite another.
