Not sure what Pridge thinks but I would say most of us recognise that Superleague hockey is not realistic. However the level of the hockey we have at the moment is far lower than 5 years ago. Yes we had Covid but now it is time for the standard to start rising again. The wage cap needs to go up and rosters need the under 23 players reintroduced. As the league needs more better quality Brits developing. Now a lot of the quality old guard are retiring. Why is it the league’s responsibility to develop the Brits? If not the leagues responsibility it sure would help having them suggest and monitor the situation. Why not aid Brit involvement.

Part of the problem is that even now, almost 20 years since it was founded, the EIHL doesn't know whether it wants to be a development league with opportunities for young British players in the style of the BNL or a BISL spin-off where players pop in for a year or two at end of the their careers, with a handful using it as a stepping stone to better things on the continent. We're running with almost the same import levels now as in the BISL, but it feels like it's just bum on seats rather than any real quality compared to five or ten years.
The raising of the import level in recent years hasn't improved the quality at all, it's actually contributed to the watering-down of the league, with players who probably aren't better than young British prospects taking a spot on the 3rd/4th line. I've used Sean Richards as an example in the past, no disrespect to him in particular but a kid straight from WHL and a couple of college seasons shouldn't be taking the minutes of someone like Jordan Kelsall, who could form part of a club for 10/12 years and go on to play with GB.

As a paying customer why should I care about a player going on to play for GB? Fine if you are a GB fan but that isn’t something that interests me at all

I don't mean to be disrespectful at all but team GB fans wouldn't make up many of the numbers at a Panthers, Steelers or Giants crowd

If the league really wanted to bring on young Brits maybe they should split the current wage cap between imports and Brits, say 75% on imports and 25% on Brits. At least it would make the clubs pay the younger Brits a more decent wage and perhaps encourage them to take hockey seriously. Can’t see the clubs doing it though because I don’t think they really care about GB.

Just do what the other arena teams do and sign the right players. If they come here to freewheel at Sheffield or Belfast they sack them. Every Brit I’ve ever spoken to (my son used to go to their camps) all said that the best way they develop is by training and playing with good imports. If we can no longer sign good imports then that’s an issue with the idiot signing them. I know Nottingham is a bit weird but watching Tetlow fall down all over the ice for two years is not something I’m interested in at all. Want good Brits then sign them but developing Brits just so they can move abroad isn’t something I’m interested in at all.

Why not aid it? As I said before the Brits don't just play for the GB team. Good Brits improve the hockey we watch every week in the Elite league. They tend to be more motivated to win for their teams week in week out than a lot of the low quality imports we see in the league. Good Brits build a strong core of the top teams. We have had this with Panthers in the past with Clarkie, Myers, Lacho, Levers, Lee, Farmer ect ect. Part of Panthers demise in the last few years is the lack of a good Brit core.

Presuming we're going to have a British requirement on the roster regs - which I actually think is a good thing for the game over here in terms of its relevancy to the general public - then it makes sense to try and keep a decent stream of capable British players coming through. Otherwise you end up with the 2022/3 Nottingham Panthers.
Doesn't mean you can't have 14 (or whatever) higher standard imports to go with them.

Am I correct in saying that our owner has an interest in Dundee Stars as well as the Panthers?
How is that allowed without a conflict of interest?
Am I missing something?

It's Glasgow Clan he owns. How is that allowed without a conflict of interest? The Elite League is a bit tin pot so we overlook stuff like that.

Re: conflict. The mind boggles. That can’t be acceptable at all. I suspect if either club started to do well that it might become an issue. Are there any other dual ownerships out there?

No but the chairman of the league owns the Steelers and that is as dodgy as dual ownership

The chairmanship moves around doesn't it? Hasn't Blacky held that role, and Kelman?
Black is allegedly looking to sell Clan too, although I think it's all gone a bit quiet on that front.

I think the chairmen is effectively one of the 10 club reps. So someone is bound to have a conflict. That’s relatively common to be fair in similar set ups.

Does look rather like the promise of selling was a smoke screen to buy time until the fans outrage died down doesn't it?

The chairman used to be the independent Eamon Convery but who did have links to Belfast. That is until Tony Smith found out how much Convery was being paid and so he was swiftly removed from office !

It's been tin pot for years it's a closed shop old boys club and they wonder why better sports networks don't want to cover or have anything to do with the league .. the sooner the league removes the likes of Simms, Smith, kelman etc and all other conflict of interest then it ain't moving forward professionally
