Just a quick question. Have the work permit qualifications changed? There seems to be a lot of players coming into the league as first year pros from university. Players used to have had played East Coast League or higher (or for a league in a pool A nation) for at least a season to qualify for a work permit.

They have changed, that’s clear (as you point out) but I’m struggling to refer you to a clear explanation anywhere of exactly what the rules are now. Do you even need a work permit these days?

Players used to have had played East Coast League or higher (or for a league in a pool A nation) for at least a season to qualify for a work permit. They have changed, that’s clear (as you point out) but I’m struggling to refer you to a clear explanation anywhere of exactly what the rules are now. Do you even need a work permit these days? My understanding was that the International Sportsperson visa has replaced the tier 2 and tier 5 temporary worker versions that coaches or players might have come in on before. Under the new visa I believe you are automatically permitted to work as the visa acknowledges you're coming in on contract as a paid employee. Under that visa as long as you're someone "who’s recognised by your sport’s governing body as being at the highest level of your profession internationally and your sport’s governing body is endorsing your application" it's issued. So basically if you're playing professionally or coming to do so it would be strange it was refused. But I might be wrong. But it's a while since I was involved in that kind of thing and so I'm presuming ice hockey follows other sports that have heard about recently.
