Can't help thinking if he was a Cardiff or Sheff player last season they would have signed him up weeks ago.

Probably because Herr is above and beyond the level of this league.. the same can't be said for the players sheff and Mardiff have re signed although they are half decent for thks league . There wasn't many players in the league last year every time who when on the ice you knew something might happen

A shame, but not unexpected. Hope he's found a bigger and better stage.

Sam Herr is arguably the best player to play in the EIHL. It can hardly come as a surprise that big clubs from Europe have shown interest and with current circumstances was only going to make it harder to lure him back. It sounds as though panthers did all they could to try and have left the door open for his return in the future. They can’t really be blamed for this one

Yes mate after seeing him play for first 2 months you knew his future was away from this league

With the spotlight on the Elite League and.....”Panthers in particular”. 🤣🤣🤣 Jeez who writes this crap. Somehow i think they’d be looking at Cardiff and Sheffield first !!! 🙄😆

Reading today apparently the government will review in November whether to scrap social distancing. So that's November before a definitive decision from the eihl.. didn't smithy say they need to allow 8 weeks to sort teams out.. so that's takes us to January..

The virus isn't just a Panthers thing.

You will still have to have people happy not to social distance and sit in presumably a fairly full arena of several thousand. Not too sure about that to be honest.

Well it shouldn't be a issue at Sheffield arena (if it re opens, they've been social distancing for years) With the NIC I'm sure you'll get the so solid hard core fans turn up no matter what and crack on like nothings happened then you'll get the sensible people !

Yep undoubtedly you’ll get the Panthers hardcore, but remember a fair percentage of Panthers crowd are older people and they’re probably the ones most in danger and therefore worried about catching the virus. Panthers crowds could well be hit harder than other teams.

Normally I would of agreed with you 100% on this, but given the circumstances I'm not sure theres a lot they could of done given that theres a very real possibility that the season might not happen at all. Despite what I'm currently reading online from Shuff fans lapping this news up, Herr was clearly the most dominant player in the league last year, so it was always going to be a tough ask to keep him without the uncertainty of covid. Speaking of shuff fans, I can't wait for the first of their 'signings' to duck out of their contract once a bigger European team dangles a guaranteed contract as the idea of a full EIHL season becomes untenable!

The end of social distancing when it happens will be for economic reasons first and foremost so after staying indoors since February and watching constant horror stories on the news (people on ventilators, daily death numbers, etc) no one is going to press a button and suddenly fill an arena. Only a few weeks ago rinks were being set aside for temporary mortuaries.

I'm almost regretting only seeing Herr live once now. How good was he? Better than Ling or Fox for example?

I'm almost regretting only seeing Herr live once now. How good was he? Better than Ling or Fox for example? My opinion is "at least as good as", in the EIHL context. Quite how Panthers managed to get Herr I don't know, but I'm glad they did. As complete a player as I've ever seen in a Panthers jersey, his skill level was way above the vast majority. He performed away as well as at home, led the team in shots (nearly twice as many as the next highest) and generally led the team by example. The amount of times I noticed him never giving up on a broken play and coming out with the puck were legion. Led the team's points all year, played every game of the season, and was at or near the top in +/-, the only statistical chink in his armour was drawing a blank in 3 games at home to Steelers, despite scoring 7 points in 3 games at their place. A dominant player who it was a pleasure to see week in week out. Good luck, Sam. PS Is it me or does the press release sound a bit churlish? Surely you'd have said a bit more than "pleased for him", "wish him well" and "good guy". There was room to be a bit more voluminous there, surely?

Cheers Bobness, there's quite a lot that can be read from Panthers statement. It certainly highlights how little has been done/is being done on the signings front for example.

While I don't think a season will happen but on the off chance a date for re start is agreed it will be interesting how quickly Panther's can assemble a competitive roster and get them here within 6-8 weeks?

I don’t think Doucet will have been sat in his hands all summer. I reckon he’ll have some agreements in place with returning players and potentially new one and they’re just not being announced which I agree with amid the uncertainty around our league. Sheffield and Cardiff may have made announcements but until we get a firm confirmation about a restart then those contracts are worth diddly squat as they may get poached by leagues that do start up
