Danny Fick www.eliteprospects.com/player/97628/danny-fickTHE NOTTINGHAM Panthers have added reliable 27 year-old defenceman Danny Fick to the roster for the upcoming 2019-20 season. The American studied and played ice hockey at the prestigious Harvard University from 2010 to 2014. The plan is for him to again study whilst playing with a hoped for link-up for Danny with the world renowned Loughborough University. A native of Minnesota Danny spent last season with the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers, where he was an assistant captain during the 2017-18 season, and had a call-up to the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. 2019-20 will mark the right-shot defenceman’s second venture into Europe as upon graduating from Harvard he moved to the Norwegian league (2014-15) where he played 30 games for Mangerlud in his first season as a professional before moving back Stateside to join Wheeling.

Really not sure what to make of this one. He will also be using a uni spot, 2 year deal?

Typical Panthers signing.. could be awesome.. could be awful..
One things for certain there looks to be plenty of offensive output from the blue line this year

This looks like the most creative set of defencemen we’ve had for a while. Wait and see. ECHL signings never have the wow factor but some the leagues best signings have come from that league. Joey Martin, Gleason Fournier, Mathieu Roy etc

Most signings in this league are wait and see and this one is no exception

Looks bang average, no idea why we are using a Uni deal on this guy. Again I hope he proves me wrong but these 'contacts' Doucet and Wallace have don't seem to be turning up much at the moment.

I think its more to do with the scouting agency's Panthers use tbh. It's not of the calibre of devils and giants lol

Wouldn't have used a uni deal, especially a 2 year one. He does look to have ability offensively though.

As others have said, a wait and see signing for me. He’s got an interesting CV having played for Havard for four years so I’d expect him to be able to handle the studies whilst with us. Also, he’s progressively improved over the years in the ECHL so he should be a solid two-way defender.
If I’m being honest I hope he’s being pencilled in for the 3rd pairing and that we’ve got some more established players to come in on defence. That way if he turns out to be a gem there’s no pressure and he can contribute freely.

Good luck to him, but yes very wait and see as has been said.
Panthers continue to use those uni deals in rather strange ways IMO, seems a big commitment without seeing how they do first.
Let's just hope that we're pleased to have him on a two year this time next year.

Very true this, I always thought it was to entice a player you'd otherwise be out the running for - maybe it didn't work out as planned, but Garnett was an example of this. He was straight out of the KHL / NLA and theres not a chance he'd been on a Panthers roster if it wasn't for the MBA. Fick could be pretty good by the looks of things, in his prime with numbers going up rather than down (very un-panthers!). But you wouldn't expect they'd have to burn a uni spot to get him.

If hes really solid at the back thats fine. But if hes been brought in as a offensive dman then this looks poor. One good season isnt good enough.
I agree about uni deals i feel too many have been wasted in recent seasons.

That’s like playing for Cardiff Devils for four years then coming to Nottingham Panthers. 🤣

Loughborough university has an excellent reputation. Google will tell you “Loughborough is currently ranked within the top 10 of all three national league tables and is internationally renowned for its sports-related courses and achievements. In 2013, the university won its seventh Queen's Anniversary Prize, awarded in recognition of its impact through research and skills development in High Value Manufacturing to create economic growth. The university is also rated five star for excellence by Quacquarelli Symonds through QS Star Scheme.” Using a course on a player in his prime rather than some 34 year old winding down may be a stroke of genius. It may be a failure. But let’s at least see some action before writing him off.

Loughborough is great, but obviously it isn’t enough to to attract a legitimate Harvard graduate on its own merit, though perhaps neither were Panthers attractive enough in themselves to uproot an academically gifted guy with only domestic experience. Seems like he took the MBA here to keep playing hockey at a familiar level throughout. Don’t forget the fees either. 4 years at an Ivy League college is bad enough, but US postgraduate tuition is monstrous. Some of the league’s best ever players have come from uni deals and Fick is on the younger side of that crop, and while his professional playing pedigree isn’t highly decorated, a college career playing NCAA Div 1 always means something.

looks a decent pickup for a second/third pairing. Numbers suggest he is still improving or having a more offensive role placed on him which is always an added bonus. Like with every signing regardless of CV they're all technically wait and see signings, Nice to see he's worn Letters before so should be up there in the leadership group which is what we need - more leaders.
I'm assuming Tetlow will be taking Lee's slot as the 6th Dman with Hazeldine slotting in for rotation?

He is the 4th left sided Dman we have.

And I haven’t even commented on what I think of his playing ability, merely that going to Loughborough after four years at Harvard seemed rather odd. He’s obviously an academic,so best just hope he’s as focussed on hockey as he must be his studying.
