Matt Nickerson of the Fife Flyers banned for 12 games for excessive roughness against Braehead - Chris Frank on 14th December www.eliteleague.co.uk/nickerson-12-match-ban-p189246I suspect that he will be departing soon - you only have to look what has happened at other clubs such as Hull Stingrays with Derek Campbell and the long game ban(s) set by the EIHL disciplinary

Fife Flyers today received news that defenceman Matt Nickerson has been handed a 12 game ban following an on ice incident during Saturday's win over Braehead Clan.
Head coach Todd Dutiaume and associate coach Danny Stewart have discussed this matter and agreed no appeal will take place but they are both fully behind Nickerson.
Associate Coach Danny Stewart said "We have had discussions with those in power and have no confidence that an appeal will change anything in this matter.
"We are backing Matty 100% and feel the punishment is much too severe for the incident.
"We would imagine Chris Frank will be wearing protective equipment on his face or not playing as we were told he incurred a facial injury more than just a chicken scratch."

I thought at the time a ban would follow and i dont think there can be too much arguement, Frank can be a plank sometimes but he couldnt defend himself. The commentators were right, had Nickerson asked Frank to go, he more than likely would have.
I do love the Flyers statement though!

The statement from the club reflects the one eyed view of some of their fanbase too

Cheers Mark. 12 games? Really? Did it go on longer than that? 2 mins for roughing

Just a thought...
I wonder if Fife are supporting Nickerson 100% the same way Cardiff supported Conboy.

They are already warming the Cortina up. No team is going to stand by a player with a 12 match ban half way through the season.

Not a very clever press release from Fife, sadly. Needless and petty "dig" at the end. Does them no favours, wins them no friends. Should have slept on that one before issuing it.
Frank did look to have a nasty mark on his face on Sunday.
Nickerson's issue appears to be that he can't lift the red mist once it descends. Not stopping punching someone when you're told to by the linos isn't really very clever. Good guy or not, and I've no reason to doubt that he is a good guy, he's a bit of a loose cannon, it would appear.
Can Fife (or any team) afford to let a player sit for a whole month?

Oh what a shame. All the post game whining to the Elite League by Fife has come back to bite them in the backside. As for the press release, it is stupidly unprofessional and would be mortified if Panthers released something like that.

out of interest here talking of number of games missed, how many games did Werner miss at the start of the season for us? Also, now how many games has Henley and Kwall now missed (and will continue to miss?)...
Add to that also how many games we will now be without (and already missed) Loyns?
Might it be best to cut our losses now and bring in full time replacements for such key roles in the team? YES i want kwall back (best goalie in the league) but as much as i think conway is getting better (and imho he is getting better) he wouldnt be anyones first choice netminder imho. Henley has been one of our most influential defenceman as well as arguably the toughest player in the league but he is only effective when he is on the ice. As for Loyns he has shown he can be a versatile player both up front and in defence but is no use sat on the sidelines.
I am not saying i dont want these players and kwall and henley would be 2 of the signings i would make for next season if they are fit but what is the point in having players sat on the sidelines when we have no idea when they will play again?...

Ok so He grabbed Frank from behind and wrestled him to the ice, Nickerson may have then intended to throw punches but with the linesmen all over him from what I can see nothing was actually thrown. Reputation alone shouldn't get you a ban (Oh hold on, that is unless you play for Panthers of course). But can someone just remind me what level of punishment a certain Mr Hewitt received for jumping Jenson from behind and punching him whilst on the ice.

I think from the statement its not so much the punches, although there were a few digs. Its the not letting go when told to and its the grabbing a player by the throat that are the main problems.

I think from the statement its not so much the punches, although there were a few digs. Its the not letting go when told to and its the grabbing a player by the throat that are the main problems. I can't quite see the grabbing by the throat, but I will concede that he grabbed him round the neck and then continued with a head lock onto the ice. But we see this regularly where a player continues to fight and scuffle once on the ice. I still can't see where a 12 game ban has come from. As a Panthers fan I love to hate the other teams tough guys and agitators, and I'm sure that goes for most other hockey fans. I love to go and watch a good game of Ice hockey and if there's a fight or other drama played out during that game all the better. I like to have Henley and Salters in our team, knowing that they are there to enforce and occasionally fight. That's what makes Ice hockey and that's one of the things that keeps me coming back year in year out. A 12 game ban is a big own goal from the EIHL, Fife lose Nickerson for 12 games and lose some of there entertainment value for both their own fans and the other teams that they will play during that time. Like it or not the Nickersons of our sport are important to it's success. Many times do I talk to people who are only occasional attendees at matches and the majority of the comments that they make suggest that they would prefer to see a fight or at least a little rough stuff. So through Nickerson's absence how many fans won't return or won't bother to turn up in the first place. Does the EIHL disciplinary panel have to answer to a higher body, does it feel under pressure to hand out these bans?

Seems a long ban for a wrestle and couple of punches. Should probably have been 3 games. Seen far worse. Although I am happy for Moray to be clamping down on goonish play. This does seem very excessive.

The reason its 12 games is because he is a repeat offender. He has already been banned 3 or 4 times this season.
Had this been his first ban I think he may have got away with 3-6 games for it.

Can you show me the post game whining by Flyers to the Elite league because as a Flyers fan I didn't see any after this game. The only whining I saw was by Frank, who tried to con people that there was an eye gouge when there clearly wasn't, and by Finnerty who went on live tv and said Nickerson should be thrown out of the league. Now to me that is trying to influence Hansons decision and is bringing the game into disrepute by doing so and should be equally dealt with. I do agree with you about Danny Stewart in the statement although it also made me smile

No Danny isn't bringing the game into disrepute, these sort of things are said all the time to stir rivalries up and what Danny said may be ill advised but it certainly wasn't anywhere near the same level as to the crying Finnerty did on live tv

Nickerson got lucky. Shawn Thornton just got 15 games for a face wash.
The Elite league is going non contact so that we can attempt to join with European teams to for a Euro league. fact.
May as well just adopt the rule book and wear full face masks. weak.
I agree with Stewart, if someone is suspended for causing injury to another player, the injured player better sit out the same amount of time to ensure he is ok.
Review every single game in full or let the ref put events on report at the time. Refs should decide punishments not the chairmans cheque book
Fighting when the Linos are in, 5 game ban for mine.
