Heres a couple of piccys and a bit about him- A physical player, Wade uses his size and aggressive style to his advantage. He loves to throw big bodychecks or drop the gloves with the leagues toughest players. Belak has become one of the toughest players in the league for that reason as he doesn't back down from anyone. He has earned the respect of his teammates through his willingness to do one of the toughest jobs in sports without hesitation. Wade had an injury plaqued season as he under went knee surgery in February and missed 28 games.

And for those who are into the tough guy/fighting aspect of the game, here are Steve's stats so you can compare them

This is well scary - this is Wade Belak who was suspended by the NHL for a two handed baseball style slash last year - I saw the game live on NASN. This guy is a complete nutter, hope he stays under control otherwise we could become the bush league fighting zone - Belak and Payette on the same team - nightmare.

To describe him as a nutter is a tad OTT. Yes he's physical, but he's not some kind of skating time bomb, just ready to explode. He'll do well for Blaze & I think he'll no doubt have a similar impac there, as McKenna has had here with our roster. I don't think Belak will register too many points though, so those fans thinking Coventry have signed a player of the ilk of Bobby Orr may be disappointed

Panthers seem to have made a good choice. In Steve McKenna we seem to have a guy who can take care of himself and his team mates but so far he has shown admirable self discipline. He is a team player and it looks as though he takes his penalties in the team cause rather than getting involved with individual conflicts. He has shown great discipline playing on D. Has he had any penalties at all so far? When you think how tall he is, to not even have collected a high stick or cross checking penalty suggests he has a great deal of self discipline. Not to mention ability.

Agree with you MP McKenna seems to be able to control himself really well and I'm sure he's not intimidated by these new tough men, lets not forget that JC is no mug, or else Vancouver wold'nt have offered him all that money, nothing to fear from any team, just wait for 66 to turn up.!!!!!!

Heres the bit I remembered:
Mar 22, 2004 The NHL has suspended Wade Belak for eight games - six regular season games and two playoff games - for striking Ossi Vaananen with his stick Saturday night.
Sorry - not OTT at all, saw it as it happened not highlights so no dressing up and no wierd enhanced angle shots. The guy was off his trolley and for no apparent reason, apart from the fact he had had some stick from someone else, he perpetrated an extended two armed slash at the head. I was surprised the guy wasn't decapitated, it was sheer fluke that it wasn't the Brashear scenario all over again.
In fact your description of him - as a time bomb waiting to explode is very apt, I saw a lot of the Maple Leafs last season and Belak introuced a very definite tension whenever he was on the ice.
Time will tell, I hope he comes plays good hockey and goes home having had a good season, though I suspect one or other of Coventry's hard men will now feel a bit more license, which means others will need to react also.

Hey an NHLer I've heard of ! Although this is probably because I always play as the Leafs on NHL 2005 on my xBox. I tended to cut Belak a lot actually. Always interesting to see one of the guys I've controlled in the flesh though.

According to www.thn.com Coventry play in the British National League, oops. Someone should tell them. Anyway, relatively good signing for the Blaze, bit worried about the guys attitude, thank god we don't play them for a while. What I want to know is when are we gonna get our NHLer?? Meh it's Sheffield we aint never gonna get one. *edit* I just had a look apparently Conventry, Dundee and London are all BNL and only Panthers are EIHL. I wonder who gives them this info. Since only Dundee are BNL and everyone else is EIHL, hmmm.

Yeah I I know the game too, it was live on HNIC blah blah blah. Belak isn't the most skilled player in the world, but he's not some kind of rabid goon either. He felt that the suspension was harsh & that he was made an example of due to the fact that his actions were on live tv. Wade took over the tough guy role from Tie Domi last season, and therefore there was bound to be aggro when Belak stepped onto the ice as that's his role on the Leaf roster, as well as being a utility man. You're entitled to your opinion yeah fine, but on this one you're way off...

Anton - with all due respect..... I think you're being somewhat blinkered here because Belak is from the Leafs. "Tough guy" and "aggro" - that's being physical, intimidating and - at the end of it - fisticuffs. Fair enough. Baseball-batting someone in the head with a hockey stick does NOT come into those categories.... and there is no excuse for it, not EVER. I have to confess, I'd completely forgotten about this incident..... but now it's been brought up - regardless of what team he's from, are you really happy to see someone playing in this country who came close to 'doing a McSorley' (Marty, not Chris) Two-handed swings to the head come MUCH nearer "rabid goon" than "tough guy" in my book.

It's nothing to do with the fact Belak is a Leafs player Shaggy, and that's me being honest Neither am I a particular fan of Belak either, as I would rather the Leafs have Perrott on the roster than Wade, as Nathan is a better all round player. I'm not defending Belak for what he did, as it was simply a dumb thing to do, especially when it's being shown on what is effectively, Canada's flagship for the good ship hockey, ie HNIC. What I said was the player himself thought it was a harsh punishment, but he accepted his wrong doing & he served the ban that was dished out to him. One error does not mean that a person, should be tarnished with the same brush till the end of time. Tie Domi was punished by the NHL for sucker punching Ulf Samuelsson, but does that mean he's a dirty player? Jason Bowen of Belfast checked Joel Poirier head first into the boards at the NIC during the 2001-02 season. Does that mean Bowen is a dirty player? Dallas' Marty Turco got retribution against Ryan Smyth of the Oilers last season, sticking the Edmonton player & thus receiving a 4 game ban Turco is well renowned for being feisty with his stick One of the game's all time great, Mark Messier, speared one of the Pittsburgh Penguins during a game in March. Does that mean he's a dirty player too? You and I know the answer is no on all counts Dave And from what I remember of the incident, Vaananen had his stick between Belak's skates, causing him to loose his balance, resulting in his own stick striking the Avs' player around the head. Intentional? Only Belak knows that one, & Belak still had responsibility when it comes to stick control that I will not argue, but saying he " came close to doing a McSorley" No, don't agree

well you could say if they were all done on purpose, Yes thye are all dirty players.

You are right I am entitled to my views - though in expressing my opinion I don't deride those of others, nor where they got their information from, and in the light of your overwhelming and obviously extensive knowledge of Belak I can only hope I prove to be wrong, though I doubt it, on both counts.

I possibly think McKenna will stay, easiest thing would be can Krulis ,move Moran to D or utilise both players how they see fit, cant see Panthers left out in cold with all these top quality players around,if they want to win something this season.
