I find it hard to believe that the Ford advert and League having some major announcement is pure coincindence. Personally I don't think Ford would have managed to think of that ice hockey ad all by themselves.
So I think Ford and BBC will have a major part in this announcement. BBC because they have had BBC ads up on that banner on the Elite page as well.

From Elite site............. New Ice Is Broken As Elite Ice Hockey League Joins NHL Network New York (Nov. 8, 2004) – The list of affiliates continues to grow as The National Hockey League (NHL) and the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) announced today that the EIHL has become a member of the NHL.com network.. The addition of the EIHL to the network is a watershed event as it represents the first inclusion of an international league site into the Network.. As an affiliate Eliteleague .co.uk will be carried throughout the NHL .com Network being the world’s largest hockey portal containing 46 web partners, including all 30 NHL teams, as well as the majority of minor professional leagues in North America. “We’re extremely pleased to add an international partner in the Elite Ice Hockey League,” said Keith Ritter, president of NHL Interactive CyberEnterprises (NHL ICE). “This demonstrates that hockey is a global game, it continues to grow throughout the world and the Internet is the perfect way to bring it all together. We’re looking forward to building on our relationship with the Elite League and growing our existing fan base in the UK,”<br> Throughout the world visitors to the NHL.com Network can now link directly to Eliteleague .co.uk for all the latest news, scores, statistics and highlights from the Elite Ice Hockey League. “This major initiative, which includes a multi-year agreement, creates exciting new links between the United Kingdom and the world’s largest hockey base in the United States and Canada,” said EIHL chairman Eamon Convery. “During the past week we had a series of meetings with the senior officials of NHL and NHL.com. Many topics of common interest were discussed and now as an affiliate in NHL.com we are looking forward to further initiatives being announced as part of a process in developing the sport”. I'm actually rather disappointed with this news... Yes it's a good deal, but I'd hoped that we'd have had a TV deal or a major sponsor for our own league... Well done to those involved anyway

Have to say I was thinking pretty much the same?..... Me too! I just didn't want to say it in case I sounded unappreciative! Thanks for being the first Wigwam ;D It seems kind of a let down...good news, but not to warrant the excitement of the press release. I'm a bit disappointed

Bitterly disappointed with this anouncement. Let's be honest, any self respecting hockey fan can find out any info about any league in the world with just a minimal amount of digging. I suppose to be fair, any extra exposure has got to be welcomed. But this is HARDLY "hold the back page" stuff, is it.

well we were all way off the mark there weren't we.
I suppose your right in saying anyone can find out about other leagues with any amount of digging but remember this is the yanks and they need help when searching for other leagues.
I guess they see it as major news because if potential sponsors see we are 'partners' with the biggest and richest (hockey) league in the world then we're worth getting involved with. So yeah its not major major major news like they were saying but think of the potential we have now in getting more people involved with the sport eg: Sponsors, TV Deals etc.... the market just got a whole lot bigger.

I was undecided when I initially posted, hence the , and I remain just that...

Well if nothing else, they'll get a lot more hits on the web page and therefore the sponsorship (Ford) banners.
It'll probably confuse a few Yanks though. The link in the "Affiliate Sites" section is just "ELITE" - sounds quite prestigious until you realise it's a UK site ;D

To coin a regularly used hockey phrase from the NHL, it would appear that the EIHL have jumped into bed with the NHL 'for future considerations'.
But what the Press Release doesn't enlighten us all on is just how much (in $ or £) this link up has actually cost the EIHL to procure?
Knowing the NHL from past experience, they don't do 'owt for nowt', particularly when affiliating what they would see as a 'Junior Partner'!
Very reminiscent of when the BIHA did a deal with Sky Sports to get British ice hockey on the TV - the BIHA had to pay Sky to cover it, not the other way round.

Im actually pleased with the news.
For sure its not a major sponsorship, but lets go back 15 months and there was nearly no Elite Hockey at all.
Anything that helps promote our league has got to be good, and I cant help but think that being linked to the NHL can only help benefit our league.
Sponsorship may come along as a result of initatives like this.

Like some of you I was a bit 'meh ...' when I heard ...
But after thinking about it for a short while ... okay, nothing earth shattering BUT a good move in the right direction. Affiliation with The Show could open doors previously closed because we weren't taken seriously. If handled well this has the potential to take the EIHL to new levels ...
Won't happen over night though.

I'd have been a lot more optimistic mate if you hadn't used italics on the word could I'm always cautious when it comes to the sports management over here mate! Hats off to them ... things have been going well and they've worked hard to set this deal up ... I hope they can now exploit it to the fullest.

I hope they can now exploit it to the fullest. Absolutely. I don't want the powers at be to read this, and look at my post and say " Mr Girdeaux is a right ungrateful sod" cos' I'm not. As I said before, credit to em' for getting the deal set up with the NHL, but I think the majority of us wanted something that... I don't know, something that we as fans could benefit from now, ie a tv deal. Like you said, hopefully this deal will be good for our game & maybe us fans were expecting something that was never going to happen in the first place...

I think expectations were that we'd be looking at an initiative more directly aimed at promoting the sport within the UK market. From that perspective then it's initially rather an anti-climax but as Helen B and others point out it's potentially a great steppingstone and might open more doors for sponsorship or TV/radio, even newspaper coverage. Just hope it does lead to more media coverage and not all our players out on strike till they get real Mercedes and not Smart Cars to drive round in

Personally I think today's annoucement is superb news for the sport in this country. We have linked up with the biggest hockey league in the world, we now have global exposure on a website that probably receives thousands if not millions of hits a day. This can only help attract potential sponsors, which will create more money in the game, of which some can hopefully be used in junior development. I think the EIHL deserve huge congratulations for looking at the bigger picture long term, instead of the usual short term fixes. I have to say that it saddens me to look around various forums (Fori??) around the league (and THF) and see such a negative reaction from the majority of fans. For the first time in ages we have some really positive news is treated like a joke The blame often lies with the powers that be about the state of the sport in this country, but sometimes the fans really don't help. Sorry for the rant, I had to get that off my chest!

I agree that this is a bit of a let-down from what we were hoping for.... but then, we can't blame the EIHL for what we were expecting, now can we?
As for what use this might be, I'm going to be lazy and just copy the relevant part of my post from THF:-

Having had a few hours to ponder the news, & read a few more views, I can see that it is good news. It's just that with the BIG build up it got, it amounted to nothing nearly as stunning as any of us hoped (In the short term).
