but to do that, I need to know why people aren't coming. As Shin said, a lot of fans will only go to watch their own team (ie Panthers). It's noticable when hockey events are held at the NIC which don't involve Panthers, the percentage of Panthers fans who go to the games is quite small, no matter how good the hockey. The interest in non-competitive games is also low - I'm not keen on exhibition games and look how few of us went to the All Star games. Not that Lions games could be called non-competitive - just the opposite, plenty of effort and commitment. The audience for ice hockey in this country is small, and not many of them are prepared to go and watch hockey played at anything but the highest level. Which is a crying shame but I'm damned if I can think what can be done to change that.

I'm very much afraid that you've hit the nail on the head there, MP..... Any ideas as to how to improve the 'attractiveness' of Lions games would be much appreciated.

if you compared the lions witha football team which league do you think they would be in??
i don't mean quality of the product i mean like money sort of thing that you get to spend on anything.
i guess it would be a very very low non league side (semi-pro league)
and from what i saw at the lions game you get about the same amount as those sort of teams do so they are not doing that badly.

Tim you cannot compare hockey with football.Football is still a national sport over here.Ice Hockey NEVER will be.
These Lions are all under 19s(Correct me if I'm wrong on this one shaggy) and therefore are playing in an age restricted league. They did gain promotion to the EPHL one season and the governing body or whoever relegated them back to the English League North.
I have never been to a Lions game because i usually have other commitments and can't get there. It has nothing do do with the standard of product on offer.

These Lions are all under 19s. The u 19`s are the Leopards.. The lions have players of all ages, from the 16`s upwards.

Carolle has it right, Andy - the Lions cover all age ranges from one or two U16s (such as Dean Tonks who scored a goal and got MoM in his first Lions game) and U19s (eg: Dan Scott, James Cooke) to senior players. Most of the Lions roster is made up of senior players..... usually in their early 20s. As for the 'promotion' to the ENPL (as it was called then) - there was no actual promotion, it was decided by the coach at the time to take the team up a level, and they lasted 3 years up there. It wasn't the governing body that caused the drop back down to ENL level - it was finances. Fair comment, thanks for being open about it!

Shaggy and Carolle
Thanks for clearing up the facts about the Lions.I was honestly under the illusion that they were all junior players.
If ever there is a game where I can make it then I will get there.

BTW - and I think Carolle can (as usual! ;D) provide better info than myself - I believe that there is a juniors game... U16s vs Flintshire..... scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, obviously before the Panthers game. How much before and exactly when face-off is I don't know (but I bet Carolle does). So - another opportunity to watch some up-and-coming Nottingham ice hockey players! ;D

I'm in a similar position to Andy, in that I'd be more than happy to go to watch a Lions game, but I usually go to watch Panthers on the saturday, and then am committed with other things if te Lions are playing the next day. It seems they'll always play second fiddle to Panthers...

It seems they'll always play second fiddle to Panthers... To be honest..... that's to be expected and not really a problem. Let's face it - the Panthers are THE main team in Nottingham, and why not? It would be stupid and unrealistic of me to expect anything else, wouldn't it? - and remember.... I'ma Panthers fan too. I just wish that we could increase the attendances for the Lions somewhat.... the potential is there, after all. If we could average only 10% of the Panthers' average attendances, that would still be 400-odd people.... which would be many times the size of the current fanbase.

Oh I quite agree Shaggy, and the use of the wasn't because I think it's a shame the Lions aren't number one, more that I wish they could raise their profile as you & the others who put a load of effort into their organisation, wish too. Pm me where I have to send that cheque re the sponsorship & I'll send it to you, as I get paid this coming friday And yes, I know you've sent it me twice before, but I'm an idiot and keep deleting Pm's ;D
