I have been reading around on a couple of forums. KoTG and the Racers forum, and it appears as though the Racers have signed Eric Cairns from the New York Islanders.
Apparently Brent Pope has been gassed.
A fantastic signing, played 400+ games in the NHL...

Exellant signing, Yes him and Mckenna have crossed sword's a few time's..i was waiting for Belfast to sign an NHL'er, but apparenty Tony Hand has said that he is happy with the current squad and he would'nt take the risk of getting rid of one of his currant squad players to bring in a NHL player who could be called back by his club very quickly.

Heard McKenna has asked Mario to come and play wiyh him! Now THAT would be something I'd like to see! "Number 21, Steve McKenna...number 88, John Craighead...and making his Nottingham Panthers debut, number 66 Mario Lemiuex!" ;D We can dream...!

Another classy bit of business by the London Racers. They are a good organisation.
Do you think we could tempt Gretzky back? ;D

Do you think we could tempt Gretzky back? ;D I think with the temptaion of our top wage of will be enough to entice him, how about we add a terrace house in St Anns and a years supply of Fish and Chips....he's gotta come, who could ignore that offer

Yeah, with the only real reason being that they are signing the best defender in the league. By far.

Taken from the Racers site.........
The London Racers announced today that veteran defenseman Brent Pope has been released by the team. Pope has been a valuable asset to the club on and off the ice. A gentleman and true professional, he has been a great role model for the younger players on the Racers. London and Pope were forced to part company because of the league rule that restricts of the number foreign players to 11 at any one time. Despite Pope being a naturalised British citizen and having represented Great Britain in international ice hockey on many occasions, frustratingly he falls within the foreign player category. Pope’s release was necessary due to the signing of another NHL player this past Saturday. Sadly, the new player will be filling the same role as Pope, that of a tough, ‘stay at home’ type of player, therefore the roster change fell to him. Coach Dennis Maxwell has known Pope since they were kids, and played both with and against for a number of years. He says his work ethic and commitment to the team has been outstanding, however the opportunity for the team to sign another player from the best league in the world could not be missed. “This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do in hockey, however we may never get another chance to sign players like this again. The fans may never get the opportunity again to see guys like this playing on our shores therefore its our duty to grasp every opportunity presented to us as coaches and club managers, and bring them here.”<br> The London Racers wish Brent Pope the best of luck in all of his future endeavours.

good for the Racers, Good for the Elite League. What with Panthers good performance in the Continetal Cup and this fresh influx of NHL Players to our shores, can only mean that The Elite league is gaining statue accross the pond.
With regards to another NHL'r coming to us, be in jest or in Honesty, I agree with Tony Hand. I wouldn't want another wandering back when the lock out ends or when a "better deal" turns up. Haveing one player lewving on the drop of a hat will be bad enough but two or three? It would leave too big a hole in the team. With all the talk going off of no team spirt at Panthers, the thought of 2 players leaving because the Show is back on, would disrupt what ever spirt they create while said players were here.
Be all and end all I am Happy with our choice of NHL'rs (I count Roman in this) I would love see #99 and #66 Iceing in the black and gold. but the cost in the dressing room would be too high let alone convinceing such players to come over.

The Pittsburgh Penguins need a new arena to play in. Perhaps Steve McKenna could persuade Mario to come over and have a look at the NIC and the Nottingham setup as part of his researches (well I know it's all on rather a different scale but...) Whilst he was here Panthers could arrange a challenge match so that Mario could ice for us. Now that would be something worth seeing!

I doubt the lock out will be resolved this season. as they have said if it goes into january then they will cancel the hwole season (if they havn't already)
and if they come here they won't go else where if they get a better deal well not this season, because they is no reason too and they have contracts the same as other players just with a cloause saing they can go back to the NHL

I believe I read somewhere that McKenna said he would be happy to continue to play over here for the season even if the lock out ended as it would help him with his injury rehab (gawd knows what he will be like fully fit ;D ;D). I think the 2 London guys and the Cardiff guy will be on the first plane back if the lock out is lifted.

Heard McKenna has asked Mario to come and play wiyh him! I don't think its too likely we'll be seeing Mario at the NIC, but we can dream. Anyway I don't think Penguin fans would be too happy if he did play here. They complained when he went to play in the Olympics, if he came here and got injured they would be livid.
