A friend of mine (one of those yet to be converted into a fan) who was listening to me droning on about how good the Panthers were in Amiens asked me when the Civic Reception would be. He went on to tell me that when the Panthers won the B&H cup all those years ago the City Council held a Civic Reception to mark their triumph. That got me thinking - why hasn't there been any official recognition of the Challenge Cup win last season? Surely the City Council, who, afterall, own the NIC are aware of the win, and of the success in the Continental Cup which did a lot for the reputation of the city as well as the sport.
So, City Council, why hasn't there been an announcement. Let's face it the Panthers are probably the only Nottingham team who'll see European competition for the forseeable future.
Perhaps Mr Huckstep's bosses would like to tell us.

Because in this hypocritical politically-correct nicey-nicey world of fluffy-bunnyism, a sport like ice hockey is deemed to be 'unacceptable' to the 'moral' majority (minority, more like!). A sport that allows fighting? that actually promotes hard, physical play? - that isn't a British-born-and-bred sport like rugby, that is (latent xenophobia and hypocrisy, all in one!). Oh yeah - and we're not already a popular item. The only thing that (in general) politicians and the media give a toss about is something that is already successful, so they can jump on the bandwagon and make themselves look good by association. The concept of actually building something up isn't in their playbook - far too much hard work!

Because the Challenge cup is a tin-pot trophy that you only have to win about 6 games to get it (like the Worthless Cup in football or whatever it is called now) and we didn't qualify in Europe .... hardly something that deserves such an event.
When we win something of note, it will happen.

Disagree Shaggy. When we win the league or play-offs, it will happen. I believe Sheffield have one when they do it and Coventry did when they won the double. But you have to win the "top trophy".
It would be embaressing to have one for the CC win or out glorious failure in France IMHO.

You obviously have more faith in the Council etc than I do. With a few notable exceptions (Mick Holland, Chris Ellis, etc) - nobody with any kind of voice in Nottingham appears to give a flying **** for our team or our sport. Poor choice of words there IMHO. Sure - we didn't qualify for the next round of the Continental Cup...... but that was anything but a 'failure' - the team did far more and far better than anybody expected.

They were never goona get any sort of civic reception even had we gone through!
But there is nothing stopping us from giving them the reception they deserve when they step out onto the ice tonight is there.

Each council is different, and some may make a big thing about it, but others wont (like ours) If Forest got to europe and came second im sure there would be a fuss made over them about it. I dont think it was a failure either, playing the top teams from three countries and not loosing a game isnt a bad thing, its something positive and even tho they dint get through, they did well for themselfs when nobody thought they would even win a game

but i think sheffield fans had to keep contacting the sheffield people to make them have a civic reception every year if they didn't there wouldn't of been one.
but if it was forest and they got back into europe(not likely) and they beat the worst team ever to play in the competion they would be about 10 pages aday for 6months about it even if thats was the only game they won and lost every other game 5-0

I think people have strayed off the original thread here. The question was why no acknowledgement from the council re the challenge cup, nothing to do with continental cup.
I have been somewhat surprised this week by the number of non-hockey people that have been asking me about the Panthers and have heard/read about how well they did in Europe.
There will be a big crowd tonight, with a number of new people amongst them. Lets hope the atmosphere is good, Panthers win and that a few new fans are created.
