Mangos not ripe for picking says Ryan Published on Thursday 21 July 2011 07:19 Steelers have had to end their interest in 30-year-old Canadian defenceman Simon Mangos. The player, a team-mate of new Steelers’ goalie John DeCaro at Bossier-Shreveport last season, was a priority target for Sheffield coach Ryan Finnerty. But the two-year Manchester Phoenix player (2006-8) has had to undergo shoulder surgery and may not be fit in time. Finnerty could now make a move for another Canadian Mike Burgoyne. He played for Belfast Giants (2008-9) and spent some of last season in Holland. www.thestar.co.uk/sport/ice-hockey/mangos_not_ripe_for_picking_says_ryan_1_3599400for all player signings and players leaving EIHL teams visit www.hockeynetuk.co.uk and look in player movement and signings section

Here's part of the article
Hemingway is the most conspicuously talented of the Giants, but he is not the most popular. That honor goes to Hoffman. In his first shift for Belfast, the hulking defenseman figured he might as well set the tone for the season so he initiated a fight. A week later, he scored a goal in his first home game and was named "man of the match"—he was presented with a 12-pack of Carlsberg pilsner in an on-ice ceremony. The 30-year-old Hoffman is the elf in the Giants' Christmas video. He is a surprisingly fluid skater with some touch around the net, but he has been pigeonholed as a heavyweight, not unfairly given his 92 regular-season fights in the AHL and ECHL. Hoffman could have slogged through another season in the minors, but a torn labrum limited him to 19 games last season and there were no offers in North America to rival £400 ($644) a week tax-free and a chance at a master's degree. He views Belfast not as a step back but as a deep breath, a city where he can grow and learn. (First lesson: Don't wear your Notre Dame T-shirt with FIGHTING IRISH down one sleeve when you're out around town. He says, "It's been in the bottom of the hamper for months now.")
"You step on the ice for one second, you've made the Show," Hoffman says of the NHL, over a beer the night after the Nottingham game. "I put education and life ahead of hockey this year, but I really, really hate the thought of being one of those guys who say, 'Ah, I blew out my knee, I blew out my shoulder, I woulda made it.' That's what's grinding in my head right now because I don't want to be him. Do I think I still have a shot at the NHL? Yeah. I know I could play a grinding role like [the Penguins'] Mike Rupp. But it's about luck right now. Getting the right team. The right tryout."

Benoit Doucet was confirmed this morning in local press, no mention on offical website yet though probably tomorrow.
Seems to be a wait and see signing last 2 seasons in Holland winning the league last year and has played ECHL and in Swedish 3rd division.

if hes as good as people think why was he signed to a poor league ? remember faubert , they thought he d rip the league up but turned out to be average at best . This guy at the mo as to be look at at no different. Would people be saying he d be a top scorer had the caps or Stars signed him? or are they jusyt saying this because it happens to be giants who have signed him ? and besides this guy isn t AHL standard , end of, based on those stats anyway

Pidge, He has better ECHL stats than Dan Tessier, Jade Galbraith and Jeff Legue. I think it's more than fair to say that he will be a very good player in the EIHL.
Maybe think or do some research before you post?

So in that case then why did jade, legue go on to play in a decent german league, Tess play a bit in the ahl yet this guy goes to holland?
why don t you think abit before jumping in abit ?
he might turn out well but its not a given and before you say, a dutch team wouldn t be able to pay that of a german 2nd tier team for instance, this plain and simple is one strange signing !

Doucet looks like a good second line center, with Matska on the top line Lets hope Doug can snap him up and pair him up with Pelle again.

Come on Pidge, Faubert was injured most of the year, it's harder to judge him on a smaller sample. This guy has great stats, odd that he signed in Holland, but he tore it up in their league.

Didn't he get a bad injury the season before heading to Holland? Perhaps that was his best offer the following season if N.A. teams were a little wary.
Or maybe he wanted to see a bit of Europe, some players want to see the world once it becomes apparent they won't make the show.

so come on then how do you rate panthers chances this year and with the imports signed? I'm not sure what that has to do with my comments regarding one of Belfast's import forwards but as you have asked.... I like the look of our roster. I think we look a lot stronger now than at the start of last season and I think and hope that we will make a stronger challenge for the league this year. I really like the look of Fox and think that Francis could be a surprise package. I did say right from the beginning of the off season that I would like us to go with 4 import D but hey ho. We shall see. I am not sure if you think I was being negative about Panthers roster of individual players. As far as I can see all I said was that the new Belfast player will be very good in this league, based on his ECHL stats and I stand by that. Much the same as I would say that Fox and Champagne will be good players for us, based on their ECHL stats.

Faubert not standing out isn't difficult to understand. Maybe he wasn't as good as advertised, however it could also been a case of 1- He came back from a serious leg (?) injury, and often time a leg injury will cause a player to lose some of their skating confidence, which obviously effects their play. And 2- Because he was in far fewer games we had less of a chance to judge him based on the games he played.
