England IMO just overlooked the basics in all aspects. Thought they were too good to even mark goalside and hold a position, It looked Pub team at times.
The teams with less stars pick the same team & same formation for years, we pick our players 2 hours before.
I agree to a point about player tiredness, but Tevez didn't do too bad last night, I think the right attitude and mid set can over come tiredness.
Something is not right behind the scenes and Capello must walk for me, he won't walk for one reason £££, sack him. Get Roy Hodgson in ASAP.. Jez, get Holloway in, he'll tell em how it is. Sack some of the players off too.

Shearer mentioned something last night that they may have been unrest in the camp and didn t want play for him, that might explain a bit. But they only decided that they had a problem with him during the finals, not during qualification? I kinda agree with you that there are at the very least big question marks over him and some of his decisions both prior to the tournament and during it, but I'd tend to agree with PIM that the real failure was largely down to the guys dressed in red.

The players weren't playing for Capello, they were playing for England and representing their country.
If that doesn't motivate them...
I agree with much of what pantherinmanc has said about the players, and said right after the game the very same thing.

Ive been saying it for the last 15 years, until you cap the limit on foreigners and change the way our english are coached into a more european style, we ll never even make a final let along win one. Its no coincidence that from around 1994-5 when the foreign invasion of players to the prem started, englands fortunes started to nosedive! Are you sure? 1960 - Didn't qualify 1964 - DNQ 1968 - 3rd 1972 - DNQ 1976 - DNQ 1980 - Didn't make it out of Group 1984 - DNQ 1988 - Group (lost all 3 games) 1992 - Group (all the manager's fault) 1950 - Group 1954 - Lost QF to Uruguay 1958 - Lost in 2nd Rd play off 1962 - Lost in QF to Brazil 1966 - Won at home controversially 1970 - Lost QF to West Germany 1974 - DNQ 1978 - DNQ 1982 - Knocked out in 2nd Rd Group stage 1986 - Lost QF to Argentina 1990 - Lost SF to West Germany 1994 - DNQ Our record after 1994 is actually better. 1996 - Lost SF to Germany (at home after a controversial QF) 1998 - Lost in 2nd Rd to Argentina 2000 - Group 2002 - Lost QF to Brazil 2004 - Lost QF to home team Portugal 2006 - Lost QF to Portugal 2008 - DNQ 2010 - Lost in 2nd Rd to Germany FWIW - Our worst performances this century have been under English managers. We're rubbish. and we always have been.

I don't think we should model our football system on other teams in europe. Lets aim higher and model it on USA system, (not their soccer team, but if American atheletes took soccer as seriously as A.Football and Basketball they would walk the world cup). Or we could just rename the FA cup the World series of football?

As for 90 - we won 3 games, drew 2 games and lost 2 games. We were poor v Ireland, good v Holland, poor v Egypt, good v Belgium, poor v Cameroon and good v Germany. We played pretty well v Italy but it was a glorified friendly. If it wasn't for Lineker Klinnsmaning it up v Cameroon the team would have come back being to a lot stick. It's also rubbish to say we should have got to the final. We played well but certainly no better than West Germany did.

Lineker won the golden boot in 86, maybe clutching at straws but we won something and had a good player. In 90 we had Gazza. I think part of the problem this year was no one player stood out and took the tournament by storm.

Thank the gods that Holland didn't win the World Cup. Both teams were cynical but the Dutch were shocking. Webb had a hard job but he did make a lot of mistakes.
Congrats to Spain. A great football team.

I said Spain would choke, they did but too early, in the first game.
Dull, dull, final. Both teams too scared to lose, they need to change something like, If it is 0-0 after 90mins the current holders should retain the trophy, that would make it more exciting.
Is it wrong that my new favorite player is Mark Van Bommel, it was like watching match of the 70's, lol
