Hi, I'm starting at Nottingham Trent Uni in October and want to play some hockey. Only thing is I'd be a total beginner. I was thinking of getting some skating lessons over the summer. Is there anything else I should be doing? Also is it recommended that I'd get my own skates for that? I'd be 24 when I start so I'm hoping this isn't too old! Basically any advice would be very much appreciated so I can start off in the right direction.
Cheers guys!

Hey man, what are you going to be studying? The Mavericks (the uni team) are a friendly bunch and they do beginner sessions on wednesday afternoons in Sutton (transport is provided) where they will teach you the very basics, then there is also C and D team training on wednesday evenings. theres not a better place to start to learn the game than with the Mav's, but for the immediate future, i'd start to learn to skate and go atleast once a week over the summer, to get you steady on your feet by the time you get to uni. im 28 and i was a beginner when i started with the Mavericks 2 seasons ago, so age doesnt come into it. its a great way to meet a bunch of new people and to keep fit. the banter is a bit full on when you are new to the guys, as we've known each other for ages, but everyone is made to feel welcome. buying your own skates would be a good start, and also starting to buy bits of your own kit might be beneficial rather than buying it all in one go (its expensive) but you can hire it from the club for the academic year, but those sets of kit get snapped up quickly, so its good if you can get your own stuff. if you need any further advice either reply here or send me a message. looking forward to seeing you in october fella
