That's an actual NBA game, the New Jersey Nets. Incredibly empty.

Sorry if it annoys anyone but I have about as much contempt for basketball as I do rugby (although the latter is for more personal reasons). Completely boring sport. I can get baseball, still not enthralled by it but can pitch up in a US/Canadian bar and watch a few games, especially where the stakes are high (eg world series) but Basketball (and, for that matter NFL) I just do not get at all.
How is the above viable?!

I’m surprised that the Nets got that many! They are 6 – 54, there’s only so much a fan can take However the Nets and other poor teams aside, Basketball is a very viable sport. March Madness (college) is one of the biggest sporting events in the States. Last nights Duke-Maryland (college) game got 18,000 watching and let’s not forget that the NBA All Star Game last month had over 108,000 in attendance. Personally though out of the NFL, NHL, MLB and NBA for me it comes in 4th

Phoenix Coyotes: You get low attendances whatever the sport. The Tampa Bay Rays (Baseball) do not sell many tickets, despite being in the World Series not too long ago. And the Jacksonville Jaguars (Am. Football) regularly don't sell out their home games, which in Am. Football is very extraordinary.

To be fair I went off on a tangent, I just don't like basketball, monotonous rubbish. But attendance wise it's all relative, sure there are college sides which pack out arenas / stadiums in the states and NHL / NBA sides that struggle to get a half filled arena. It's not always to do with the level of the sport and the quality on show but often to do with the local appetite for a particular sport. Personally speaking I like the opportunity to go somewhere other than The Bell Centre, ACC or MSG and pick up tickets with relative ease. Some quality arena's and some quality hockey on show for a tenth of the price you'd pay at any of the aforementioned arenas.

Being a fan of all things Atlanta, I have to say that the Phillips Arena is a top quality arena, whether it's quality hockey is for others to judge

Being a fan of the Leafs I don't think i'm qualified to give an opinion on the quality of hockey :-)

They do get poor crowds, but that one there is in the thousands, their lowest being 6,500 i believe. That NBA pic must be in the hundreds though, it's embarrassing really. I know NJ is a crap area for fanbase, but still...

What is this thread about? Of course basketball is more popular than hockey (in America).
What next? Football is more popular than rugby in England shocker?
In America it goes (teamsports) -
NFL MLB NBA NHL.
Actually, that's not right. It's more like -
NFL NFL College Football MLB NBA College Hoops NHL MLS

According to that link the over 40 schools average over 10,000 in CBB. Not that attendance is a great guide to popularity. The best gauge is media coverage and tv ratings.
The NHL would kill for the interest that March Madness enjoys. March belongs to CBB. Look at the fuss about bracketology. The NBA can't compete with the amateur game rift now.
I've not clicked on ESPN today but the chances are it's front page is Hoops story. Very rare Hockey can lead US sports media (Team USA excepted).
Gotta click on ESPN now!!!
