Defo Melancon.
Now there was a quick skater. The most vivid memory I have of him is that when the rest of the team huddled around the net before the opening face off, Craig used to circle the net skating round and round, gradually increasing his pace until he was flying.

Craig Melancon - probably one of the best home debuts I have seen from an 'Import' - didnt he rack up something like 3+6 in his first game....... and the riding the broomstick goal celebration - classic. The only other player I have seen create the same level of excitement was Fred Perlini in his debut against Whitley Bay - stickhandling round the entire team twice before scoring

Brilliant thread, Stef. Brought back a lot of memories of the ole games in the ole barn, with Eric on the organ!
Made me get out the old photo albums and reminisce.
It just shows how hockey has progressed over the years.
Keep up the good work.

'Tis indeed Mr Melancon. I love this picture because it encapsulates my memories of this outstanding player perfectly. My recollection is of him playing every shift at 100mph, head down, arms pumping, very intense and emotional. A classic case of love him if he's on your team, hate him if he isn't. Here's another good one of him buzzing around our opponents goal. I really like this one by Pete Gingell as well because Melancon has got that 'I'm really really cross' look on his face that usually meant he was about to blow his top. 10 points to anyone who can name the other two Panthers; 50 points to anyone who can name the two Whitley Bay players to the left of Melancon; 1,000,000 points to anyone who can name the referee and linesmen.

Van Agtmael, Von Gool and Splinter.
You think losing by a goal at home is bad. After the first period Whitley led 1-7. The golden days eh?

Yep Terry Ord, he was the 2nd player Id ever heard of. Paul Adey was the first, and the night before my first game Ord had hit Adey and put him in hospital. Keep going Stef, weve nearly got to my era

A couple more for you. 1 March 1986. Panthers v Ayr. Pete Gingell's shots of the preliminary bout which a few seconds after these were taken became a bench-clearer. Looking again at the first picture, I'm a bit worried about Nigel Rhodes' right foot, which appears to be facing the wrong way. In the second picture, who is the Panther on the right who's just caught a good one, and who is the Ayr player who's delivered it? Also, what part did that Ayr player play in our club a few years later? The player just taken one is my old class mate James Elliot, or as I knew him James Hunt. God rest his soul. As I remember him he was always in fights at shcool as well, one or two with me.

I Don't know about having it so good now, what about the young lady with the flask. Imagine what would happen now if the arena staff caught you with one of those now.

To turn the tables on you Stef... -10 for the Panthers player in front of us. 3 points for the one on the left. 20 pts only (as we have just mentioned him lately) for that guy in the centre of pic. But who's in goal for 1,000 points ,did it go in? and what sandwiches were eaten by me that day.

9 - TK, 19 - "Smacker" Fred Perlini, 16 - Layton Eratt and the goalie is probably Ian Woodward, but it could be Brian Cox, but he doesn't look porky enough to be Coxy Looks to be a game against Cleveland Bombers, didn't Jim Earle wear 12 for them for a few years?

The tall Whitley player is indeed Mike Babcock, who coached Detroit Redwings to the Stanley Cup last season. Yes folks, a Stanley Cup winning coach played here. Van Agtmael, Von Gool and Splinter Good grief Baz. You're even more anal than me. This was the Nico Toemen era and every now and then he would bring Dutch refs over to do a few games, and these are three of them: Chris van Agtmael, John van Gool and Jan Splinter. I seem to remember a guy called Ad Stuiver reffed a few games as well. You think losing by a goal at home is bad. After the first period Whitley led 1-7. The golden days eh? And that was 7 goals on 13 shots. Poor Mark Steeples. Whitley went on to win 13-6 with Luc Chabot, nowadays Thommo's assistant at Coventry helping himself to 5+5. Crazy.

I think it's probably Coxy. Woody was a bit taller than the goalie in that photo appears to be. I can't work out who the opposition are. Jim Earle was at Whitley the season we had Fred and they don't look like Whitley shirts to me. Also the no. 12 appears to have a moustache which I don't think Earle did. No. 19 for us is definitely Fred. A great player, but he had to be as he replaced Jamie Crapper, who was a big favourite here. Here's Fred sitting a penalty:

Here's a couple of pics that give some idea of what the old place was like, taken by my mate: Cougars, 1982ish. Future Panther Ian Woodward in goal. Anyone know the opponents? Panthers v Streatham, 29 September 1984. Packed house as usual. Note the antiquated equipment at the far end. Above where it says Nottingham Ice Stadium is the scoreboard, Panthers on the left, opponents on the right. To the left is the old clock. This was divided into three different coloured segments for each period and had a large hand that denoted minutes and a smaller clock, barely visible in this view, which counted the seconds. No separate clock(s) for penalties. It was the original clock from the 1950s, in which era the teams changed ends half way through the final period. The control box for running the clock had a switch that had to be changed before ten minutes of the third period had been played or the hooter went. Once play was under way the clock was stopped and started by pressing and releasing a plunger. When you took your thumb off it, the second hand went back a second before moving in the right direction, meaning most games were 62-63 minutes long. And who can forget that famous night when the hooter jammed on at the end of one of the periods for about ten deafening minutes before Roger wobbled up a rickety ladder and cut the electric cable in a shower of sparks, watched by thousands of enthralled punters. Bit of a dust-up on the ice. Streatham goalie Gary Brine itching to join in as usual. Gary Cloonan in the foreground, now sadly deceased. Who's the ref?
